What a really nice symphony. I wasn't familiar with this composer at all. Thanks for posting this. I will listen to this often.

I'm very lucky to find this music here. Now I know the composer Jan van Gilse any more ...

I really loved listening to this oddly neglected symphony. What a beautiful work, I agree with another post here, the scherzo is extremely enticing (reminds me of a Dvorak furiant a little at times). People mention the composer's sad life ... didn't they all have sad lives, more or less?

Another beautiful work and surprisingly a Dutch composer. Sorry he had such a sad life. Beautiful symphony. Thank you!

@@wielandwittmann9832 -- Thank you, Dear Wieland! Sadly, the stock market and Chinese pandemic conspired to force postponement of my barge cruise along the rivers of Europe...to Bavaria where I hoped we could pass an afternoon together discussing and listening to music while enjoying Knödel and Weißwurst with a bottle of Frankenwein. Stay well, my Friend!

Unfortunately Dutch music is rarely heard in Dutch concert halls like it's not good enough. This music is lovely to hear on a sunday evening.

    Interessante composizione di carattere tardoromantico.
Lo sviluppo è di tipo astratto di provenienza tedesca (Brahms).
    L'esecuzione e registrazione è ottima.
    Bel post.

Beautiful example of the early 1900s bombastic romanticism that would become part of the musical language throughout the century .... Also, I keep hearing so much of James Horner's early film music here (in particular Battle Beyond the Stars and Star Trek II) He was known to borrow heavily from the symphonic epics of this period...Wonder if he knew Van Gilse and was influenced by him?

An attempt by the German occupiers to destroy all of van Gilse's work was prevented by his collaborators.

And, because of this, music of Gilse is what? good, bad, so so, or what else? And, why the whole world should know that Max B. is your favorite composer. I like Max very much, but I also like many others. However, I do not provide a list of my favorite composers on the web. Incidentally, do you like violin concerto.by Hindemith?
