The song was inspired by his own mum who died of cancer when he was 14 (I think). She came to him in a dream saying "let it be". Sad reason but lovely dedication too.
If you listen to the Get Back session he sings mother Mary before he sings Brother Malcolm who was ther Road manager at the time it was a bit of joke they were only practising the song at the time
This song came from from a dream Paul McCartney had about his mother, Mary, who had died when he was in his teens. She was reassuring him. Such a beautiful song! 🌺✌️
Paul sang and wrote this. His mother's name was Mary who passed away when he was 14 yrs. old. You're on the right track! According to Paul, he was in a worried state of mind and his mother came to him in a dream, comforting him and telling him to "Let It Be".
My Mom has told me about when her older brother died at 19, she was 16, she would just listen to this song over and over. The album had come out the year before. She got the sheet music and would play it over and over on the piano. She played it all the time when I was a kid. Touching song.
This is my favourite song of all time. I was born in 1976 and this song has always been there from my first memories. The Beatles are my dads and my favourite band. My mum trained as a nurse in Liverpool in the early sixties and got to see the Beatles in Liverpool. My mum like Paul McCartneys mum was a midwife and also died of cancer. Paul’s mum appeared in a dream when he was wrestling with issues he was going through with the Beatles as they were nearing the end….she said ‘let it be’
His mother's name was Mary. She came to him in a dream at a troubled time in McCartney's life. The song has been adopted as a Catholic anthem because of the name Mary. The virgin Mary could absolutely come in a dream and say Let It Be, and the sound of music. If his mother was named Gladys there would be no discussion on this.
@@THEJAYYSHOW It's also been said that when the melody for this song first came to him, he stayed in his house for weeks to ensure every note and chord was perfect because he felt he had another "Yesterday" on his hands - and he did! It was a worldwide smash, the title of their film, and has been covered by many artists in every decade since!
Good catch, yes the song is about Paul's mother Mary (a midwife) who died of Breast Cancer when he was 14, years later Linda McCartney would also die of Breast Cancer. Paul was named after his father Jim, Paul's name is actually James Paul McCartney but called Paul so he wasn't confused with his father. Paul was raised in a loving family with tons of Aunts and Uncles who were always around. John was another story his mother Julia was very irresponsible, and his father wasn't there. John's aunt Mimi went to Social Services and had John taken away, she and her husband raised him, he loved his Uncle but was always butting heads with his Aunt. John's mother married a lot of men and had other kids, none with the same father. She and John reconnected when he was a teenager, Julia was a free spirit and helped foster John's love of music, She was run over by a drunken off-duty cop when John was 17. John named his first son Julian after her. When John divorced his first wife, Cynthia, John was never around for his son. Paul, who was from a big family, would visit him a lot. In the back of a Limo on his way to visit Julian, he wrote a song to comfort the kid, Hey Julian which became Hey Jude. Pauls love of music came from his father and his extended family
You really get the song that’s awesome! He wrote this song about his mom who died when he was 9. He had a dream and she came to him in his dream. Her name was Mary. ❤️❤️
Paul wrote and song this song about his mom who died when he was younger! This was one of my Mom’s favorite songs! It is a beautiful song and one of my favorite Beatles tunes too! You are right about his mother coming to him in a dream!❤️❤️
My favorite Beatles song. I was lucky enough to see Paul McCartney in concert in 2014 and when he sand this song at the piano I cried. I wasn't expecting that reaction but it's such an emotional song.
It's Paul singing. His mom was named Mary who died when he was young and she told him to let it be. His dad was a musician so send he woke up to his dad's music.
It is his mother, a mid wife named Mary, who died when he was 14 of cancer. It was very hard on the family. Years later she appeared in a dream during a stressful time in his life and said, Let It Be, which he woke up and began the song, hence, "I wake up to the sound of music". Many have used it in a religious context, which Paul has no problem with, but it was not a religious song when he wrote it.
Its for his mother, Mary.... but we got to sing it in catholic school for Mass too, many decades ago. Catholics pray to saints and the Virgin Mary, thus the prayer.... Hail Mary, full of grace.
20th Century Classic! "Let it Be" was all over the radio when I was a really little kid, so listening to it always reminds me of my late mother. And to think, this song came out the same year that Simon & Garfunkel released "Bridge Over Troubled Water" -- another sublime pop song that reaches the heavens. Also, check out the gospel choir version of "Let it Be" featured in the motion picture "Across the Universe". Clips of that can be found on RUclips. Be warned though, it might make you cry.
Paul's mother, Mary, who died when he was 14, came to him in a dream. This was at a time when The Beatles were not as cohesive as they had been in the past. Life was getting in the way and Paul was under a lot of stress. His mother, in the dream, told him to not worry, just let it be.
Paul's mother's name was Mary. She died when he was 13 years old. The inspiration for the song was a dream where his mother told him to let it be when he was going through a troubled time.
Jayy, the "Mother Mary" reference is about Paul's mother coming to him in a dream but what is so beautiful is that it also works as a religious idea as well. No, he's not literally speaking about the Virgin Mary, but the effect is the same: the vision comes to him in a dream and the message lifts him up out of his troubles and gives him new hope for the future and the present. That, and the song is clearly a Gospel-style song, with choral background singers and "Church"-organ and so on. That's one of the great things about the song is those wonderful people in our lives, those who love us, even if they have gone on to the Afterlife, still bring us help, care, love and wisdom, that is "of God", if you will; it's as if an angel appears. In effect, that is exactly what happened, to Paul.
Hey there! You're pretty well close in your interpretation. Sir Paul had actually clarified this meaning in several interviews: at this point in the career of The Beatles there was quite a bit of tension and strife-which helped lead to their breakup. A lot of these arguments the group would have involved the direction of the band and their music and the state of their business, Apple Corps Ltd., their record company (not to be confused with Apple Computers). Paul felt particularly stressed about the situation, details of which can be found and/or discussed elsewhere. Anyway, one night Paul fell asleep and he had a dream about his mother, Mary, who had sadly died of breast cancer when he was about 14 years old. In this dream, she had told him something to the effect of, "It's ok. You're gonna be alright, just let it be." When McCartney woke up he was inspired to write this song. Love you. Love your reactions!
Its a wonderful song, I think you got it more or less right. Eventually😎😎 As Gaz said, Mary was his mum, who died when Paul was young, the band were splitting, he had a dream about his mum, saying let it go, let it be. The instrumentation is just brilliant too
This song, John Lennon's "Imagine," George Harrison's, "While My guitar Gently Weeps," and (the 5th Beatle) Billy Preston's "That's The Way God Planned It" are some of the most inspirational songs ever written. Thank you for another honest, genuine reaction 💕
Paul McCartney was really anxious and nervous and worrying about all kinds of things that were going on he went to bed one night had a dream and his mother Mary not the Virgin Mary but his own mother who had passed away came to him in a dream and said it’ll all work out just let it be he woke up and wrote the song in a matter of minutes
Jchampboston, that is a really good point. Paul was incredibly worried about the future of The Beatles. Did you see the Peter Jackson documentary "Get Back"? There is a point at which George had, essentially, left the band and John was a no-show. Paul and Ringo were sitting there, with some other folks, waiting and wondering what was going on. The camera focused in on Paul's face and he is just fighting back the tears! His face was ashen and he looked like a broken man. OMG, that hit me so deep when I saw that. God bless Paul and all the lads!
@@michaelbriefs9764 when he said, "then there were two," it was so prophetic now since he and Ringo were the only two there. Now there really is only two and its Paul and Ringo. Almost broke me.

Love your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times. This was written and sung by Paul. If you want to hear RIngo, check out "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus's Garden". This is one of the songs that I will often point to when discussing how underrated I think George Harrison is as a pure rock guitarist. His excursions into Sitar really expanded his muical "vocabulary".
The song is about his mother but he has stated he is very happy that people find solace in it as a song of faith. Also the fact that he made it sound like a hymn is probably no accident. Having grown up a catholic he would have known exactly how people would have taken the song. And finally there is a biblical text that McCartney either consciously or subconsicously appears to allude to. Luke 1:38, Then Mary said: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. 'Let it be' done to me according to your word. And the Angel departed from her." Anyhow, you can see why McCartney is so comfortable with the song also being about the Virgin Mary if people wish it to be.
"Mother Mary" is a biblical reference... but the song itself was inspired by Paul McCartney's late mom Mary McCartney, who died from cancer while Paul was a teenager. "Let it be" was something she would tell her son when he was upset... Paul McCartney always spoke fondly of his mom... Tragically, he lost his first wife Linda McCartney in 1998 to cancer as well - they were married for 30 yrs, and she was the love of his life. John Lennon also lost his mom to an accident in the 50's... he wrote the Beatles song 'Julia' about his mom. If u wanna hear Ringo Starr sing... the Beatles songs w/ him are: "Yellow submarine"... "Act naturally" ... "With a little help from my friends" ... " "Octopus' Garden".

You’re right, of course, as usual. You should think about being a counselor, detective, psychologist, or maybe preacher. Whatever confused mysteries these songwriters are going through, you have the heart of the matter simplified and out in the open before the song ends. It’s pretty amazing.
Loving THE JAYY SHOW Beatles Train as it keeps chugging down the tracks. Your instincts were pretty spot on about the songs main influence. Very impressive young lady! OH! DARLING is another fantastic Beatles song that I think would be right up your alley. Great reaction JAYY!! Thanks for sharing, RNB (The singer is Paul)
I grew up with this song as it was released when I was 4 years old, it wasn't until much later that I learned about its significance when Paul was interviewed about it. You ask us to let you know about something you don't know, but when you do it that way, we don't get to see your reaction to finding out what us viewers know. You did have a good understanding about how you listened to the lyrics carefully, very well done reaction. What you could do in the future, would be after your give your interpretation after the song ends, search online for what you want, find the Wikipedia page. For this one, I would type to search, "Let It Be Beatles Song" that way you get the song, not the album with the same name, or anything else out there with this title. Read just the intro paragraph at the top while you're still recording, I would like to have seen your reaction to this. I will read where you replied to others comments, but please consider this.
213 released authorized songs. Another 400 still in the cans unreleased. These lads are in a different atmosphere. You should start from the beginning and chronological play their music. You will understand the progression from start to end. To this day, unmatched.
@Jayy- This was Paul singing this great song. One of the big things that John and Paul had it common and it really helped to bond them was they both lost there mother when they were very young. Paul's mother was named Mary and Johns was named Julia. John has a song that he did while with the Beatles and its called Julia in reference to his mom. You might react to it sometime.
Paul McCartney sang the vocals in this song. Mary, sometimes, is a reference to marijuana. Jimi Hendrix recorded a song entitled "The Wind Cries Mary", which can be interpreted as a song about marijuana. Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers recorded a song/music video entitled "Last Dance With Mary Jane", which can be interpreted as a song about smoking marijuana.
Yes Jayy This song was written by Paul about his mother named Mary . The Beatles have never been equaled by any other artist to this day . They had more number one hits and sold more records than anyone . Elvis was there nearest rival at the time . John Lennon Paul Mcartney . were great song writers . There are lots of great artists just as good and better but what they did was just in the 60s changed the face of music .
@@THEJAYYSHOW Try to ensure it's their official video version. The song and the lead guitar break are both some of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time! Take a look at Billy Preston's cover of "My Sweet Lord" at the "Concert for George", too.
Thing is, you can interpret it any way you want. If you find something spiritual in it, so be it. If you know the background of it, that Paul was talking about his mother Mary who came to him in a dream, then so be it. I think this is one of those ambiguous meanings that make it universally beautiful and moving.
This is Paul on vocals and he wrote it. Just a fyr...in the early days of Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote most of the songs together for the Beatles. George matured later in terms of songwriting. Anyhoo...John and Paul agreed to credit both for writing songs. This contract continued into the later years of Beatles even though the songs gradually became solo writing efforts. So even though Paul wrote this song, writing credit is 'Lennon and McCartney'. Same is true of songs that John wrote by himself..Paul got co-writing credit. I don't know why they continued this co-writing credit into the later Beatles but they did. You won't find a Beatles song that credits John or Paul solely for writing it.
@@THEJAYYSHOW --Lucie gave a good explanation. I'll add that there is no good reason for John to be official co-writer of 'Let It Be', just as there is no good reason for Paul to be official co-writer of 'Come Together', a well-known song by John Lennon. Co-writing credit goes back to early days when they truly did write songs together. Maybe like a marriage, John and Paul continued this pattern even into the later years of Beatles when they wrote songs separately for the most part.
There’s some debate as to which Paul was speaking of his mother “‘Mary” or the Virgin Mary that he was referring to. Most think it was referring to his own mother, but he wouldn’t be too far to think that he was trying to imply a dual meaning here. We don’t really know exactly what he meant. Like many artists, he seems disinclined to be specific about the meaning of his work and to allow others to interpret in whatever way works for them,
I had always thought he was talking about a mother superior (nun) with "Mother Mary" and I later found out it was indeed his mom, but I kind of like the nun imagery.
You came across my feed because I love reaction videos and I must say 2 things, you are an absolute gem and I love your intro 😉💯 been checking out your vids since ✌️
I've always thought he was talking about Mother Mary, Jesus' mother, and I've been listening to The Beatles for over forty years.. I can't say that is 100% for sure. Just my take. This is definitely a McCartney song. One of my favorites.
Paul lost his mother, Mary, when he was just 14 to cancer. He used to go to John's mothers house for dinner and when he left, she would say to John. "That poor boy, losing his mother." Julia was hit by a car and died shortly after. John had just turned 17. The World took their mothers, so in each other they found a brother and changed the world.
Robert plant said because the lack of power and technology .the Beatles couldn't be a powerhouse at that time but jay your right I've never heard a bad song .

You’re right, of course, as usual. You should think about being a counselor, detective, psychologist, or maybe preacher. Whatever confused mysteries these songwriters are going through, you have the heart of the matter simplified and out in the open before the song ends. It’s pretty amazing.
Hermosa canción. 💕
Thank you so much for watching
@@THEJAYYSHOW The pleasure is all mine :-)
You might react to it sometime.
so it was paul!!
@@THEJAYYSHOW Correct!!
Hey Jayy!!! This is my favorite Beatles song!!!
Really how awesome
If The Beatles were a church, this song would play eternal!
Mt mother's name is mary . This song always spoke to me .
it's beautiful
@@THEJAYYSHOW thank you
Paul McCartney sang the vocals in this song.
This is their last album together. You may enjoy watching the documentary "Get Back."
Oh wow
Abbey Road was made after this but Let it Be was released last.
You are correct! George Harrison guitar ! Fantastic!
Listen to "Something " sung and written by George
i may have to give that a listen
@@THEJAYYSHOW Try to ensure it's their official video version. The song and the lead guitar break are both some of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time! Take a look at Billy Preston's cover of "My Sweet Lord" at the "Concert for George", too.
His mother’s name was Mary. She did appear to Paul McCartney in a dream, as she died when he was fairly young.
Not only do I love your reactions, but I love your spirit… and you are quite a beautiful woman!
Thing is, you can interpret it any way you want. If you find something spiritual in it, so be it. If you know the background of it, that Paul was talking about his mother Mary who came to him in a dream, then so be it. I think this is one of those ambiguous meanings that make it universally beautiful and moving.
it's amazing
They were magic, Subscribed! Again
Of course this is a great version. Like you said, there’s not a bad Beatles song. But you HAVE TO hear the Aretha Franklin version. It’s incredible!!
You won't find a Beatles song that credits John or Paul solely for writing it.
why would he be the cowriter? i can't wrap my head around that
@@THEJAYYSHOW --Lucie gave a good explanation.
Like many artists, he seems disinclined to be specific about the meaning of his work and to allow others to interpret in whatever way works for them,
Paul's mother Mary Patricia Mohin was a midwife and died from an embolism after cancer surgery on October 31, 1956.
Paul was 14 years old.
Paul is referring to his own Mother whose name was Mary....love you Jayy!!!!
Wow spot on accurate jayy.
Masterpiece 👑
Ironically, I believe this was the last song by The Beatles as a group to hit the charts.
free as a bird ,,,,, real love
I had always thought he was talking about a mother superior (nun) with "Mother Mary" and I later found out it was indeed his mom, but I kind of like the nun imagery.
You came across my feed because I love reaction videos and I must say 2 things, you are an absolute gem and I love your intro 😉💯 been checking out your vids since ✌️
I like how every Beatles reaction video's comment section has everyone explaining the origin of the song lol
I've always thought he was talking about Mother Mary, Jesus' mother, and I've been listening to The Beatles for over forty years.. I can't say that is 100% for sure. Just my take. This is definitely a McCartney song. One of my favorites.
He is talking about his Mother, who was named Mary and died when he was a teenager.
I would love to see you react to The Beatles - Hey Bulldog.
Like the beatles
They are great
Gotta check out James Corden and Sir Paul McCartney in Liverpool "Carpool Karaoke" It was Magical!!
Check out Carpool Caraoke with Paul McCartney. When he talks about Let it Be...he makes James Corbin cry.
It was Paul..
In the top ten greatest songs ever written. My top ten anyways
Great choice
childhood memories of his own mother making everything all right
His Mom was Mary. She told him this when she was dying of breast cancer
Sheesh
LOL - you're overanalyzing...just Let it Be ;-)
Thanks for the reaction!
Robert plant said because the lack of power and technology .the Beatles couldn't be a powerhouse at that time but jay your right I've never heard a bad song .
Oh wow
Yes his own mother Mary spoke to him in a dream.
Paul McCartney's mom. He had a dream were she gave him some advice. His mom died when Paul was 14.
