- Heres how I strip the paint off my locomotives and so far with this technique I havnt had any problems. Todays victum is a Tower 55 ES44DC. The engine will be repainted into a NS GEVO. Thanks for watching!
I found your video last night and tried this trick. Less then 24 hrs. Worked great. Thanks for sharing.
I use this method too for ScaleTrains and other brands except Kato as you mentioned. A couple of tips for anyone using the method, put a lid on the container, when ready to open, go outside!! The fumes will knock you over!! haha To save the IPA, I use an automotive paint filter and pour the used IPA thru it, this will filter out all the peeled paint items. For Kato, I sand blast the paint off.
Thanks for the tutorial. I got several Blue Box kits with mismatched loco models that never appeared on the roadname that they came with. I've gotten one done so far and it came out great! Keep up the great work!
Thanks very helpful. I'll will do this to my engine. Great video
You can also put a couple big clean rocks in if they fit. They take up space and you won't need as much alcohol.
What about glass marbles to take up the space or blind baking ceramic balls.
NS - thanks for posting this video, can't wait for the paint & decal....
Sweet! I did that to my SD(P)45 and it was hard to tell when I had took paint off because, it was an old Athearn and the shell was black with the SF pinstripe scheme on it. Now it sets there in O/W.
Excellent Video. Thanks NS. Please continue the videos on this Tower 55 through dcc and sound installation. Thanks again...
Glad it worked out for you! I think the only difference is that 91% might work quicker.
You might be right. I used 70% and it took 14 hrs.
Cool, i did not no that is how you strip it down, putting it in a big thing of alcohol, U should repaint it into a Conrail, Even if it would not be realistic but VERY, VERY Cool. Another Fantasy Scheme, Looks good, u do great work.
Damn. Nice kitchen!!! :D
can you still use alcohol? Will it take a week or month or day lol? I need an idea if you can tell me....
I’ve never done this before, will I need to worry about breathing in any kind of harmful fumes
Hello NS, good job. One additional tip is to use soap that doesn't have any lanolin or moisturizers in it that will leave a thin film on the surface. Plain Ivory or Dawn works well. What type of camera did you use to shoot this video?
Good tip!
I let it soak 48 hours and it only removed 15% of the paint what do you recommend next They were all ( 4 ) SD40-2 Athearn I have scrubbed it with a tooth brush but 85 % is still there What now?
coolll thanks dude it wont be for a while but ill send it to you when i do it. Cant wait to see the es44 after its been painted/ decaled
Cool, can't wait to see the next step.
Does this also work for steam engines? I’m kinda curious.
awesome bro! This wouldnt affect the plastic right? I mean it didnt on the tower 55 but other models may have sensitive plastic? Idk but i am going to try this on a kato sd80mac and ill post a vid and tell you how long it takes. Thanks this is very helpful!
To strip KATO locomotives I use a product called Purple Power which you can buy many places, but I get mine at O'Reillys(no I don't work there)because I can get it cheaper on sale than anywhere else
great video helped me a lot.
I always use 99% alcohol bath in sonic cleaner and in 0ne hr done ready to primer coat .The cleaner i use in 6l Ultrasonic Cleaner Stainless Steel Industry Heated Heater W/timer got off ebay for only $65 shipped
Let it sit in the alcohol over night, that usually works pretty well.
What kind/brand alcohol ??? Good job
I need to do this with one of mine
I'm redoing a bachmann gp10 in up colors and it it taking forever to get off. I've used a toothbrush but having better luck with a dollar store black bristle brush.
hi, thanks for the video. it' s my first try. It' s a kato sd-90 up. You say that KATO is more dificult to remove the paint. I redo the same procedure 2 times it' s probably ok thanks.
That's what I use to strip my diesels.
would you happen to know how long athearn blue box kits cars take ?
I am trying to strip and Atlas RS-11 with Kato drive to turn into a CN RS-18. Does this damage the plastic?
nice!
I have a Hornby Class 56 locomotive that I want to strip to the bare plastic. Won't alcohol "melt" the plastic after the paint is gone?
No, Isopropyl Alcohol is safe. Do not use Acetone though
any updates? did it crack or make the plastic brittle? any damage?
What about 70% [only % store had] bachman?
how is the project going any updates
EXCELLENT VIDEO!
Can anyone tell me if they did this for a Kato locomotive? Specifically, I have a HO Kato SD70MAC in which the shell is painted with the CSX "bright future"/"YN2" scheme. I want to strip the shell and paint it Norfolk Southern black and then apply decals. Thanks for the feedback!
Hey josh I got a question what would be the best way to get in contact with you? Via email or what would you prefer?
I just want to remove the railroad company lettering off the sides of the engine, but nothing else ... how would I do that? Thank you for help on this and thanks for this well done video!
try to scratch it off lmao
Nine years later that rubbing alcohol is / was hard to find.
Is it ok to use 99.7% strength? That's the only strength I can find here.
Can you do this with passenger cars aswell?
If you take the shell off of it then for sure. Sorry it took 2 years for an answer.
where can you get silver paint for coaches?
That's a great tutorial on removing paint off models, now tell me please, that alcohol is I'm assuming INDUSTRIAL ! isn't it !!! & was there any drawbacks to your method ! Oh & btw I use an old shaving brush when washing my models in sap as its soft yet firm & gets everywhere
It is 91% Isypropyl alcohol, which is very dangerous if consumed, so yet you could consider it industrial. No draw backs that I've found yet!
Thanks for that, now can you tell me would that give the same results if I was removing decals off a loco or wagon,
That is only used if you want ALL the paint to come off, leaving only the bare plastic.
@@nsmodeler24 it doesn't affect the plastic at all, does it?
And what about the transperant windows -if can't be unattached to the body- are they affected in any way??
Appreciate your comments
Cheers
@NSmodeler24 Thanks
did it damage the plastic or make the plastic brittle or crack?
Do you have to remove the windows
yes. if you dont, you'll have tinted windows. lol
can u just repaint over the original paint? I don't have a day
You do if you want to paint it XD
If you just paint over existing paint, it'll be too think and cover up the fine details.
a beautiful Northern Pacific engine gone. What a sad moment.
In a way, I feel your pain. But if you model railroad X but you can only buy a model for railroad Y that you want to run, you have no choice but to repaint...
@@HungryGuyStories True. I'm modelling a 'What if the Virginian Railway didn't merge with N&W for another decade?" scenario. Cute justification without going the "Virginia & Ohio" route - and creating an entirely fictional railroad.
So, how long were you grounded for doing this in your Mom's new kitchen?
😆
Why would you want to strip the paint off? I'm getting ready to start modeling my own N scale locomotive types.
To repaint the model into a different color or scheme
why don't you just buy undec. units/
Then he wouldn't be able to make this helpful tutorial
What a stupid move. Cant really put it nicer then that, or there a reason to say much more then that. I know this was done years ago, but lets take a limited run retro paint job that anyone with foresight will know be worth something to collectors, strip it, and then paint it up to a generic modern paint scheme that will be easily available in the future. This is more of a disappoint video then it is an educational one. I also feel you used this example of paint scheme just so people would click, and for that I down vote you. Even if it was all you could get you still get one for taking out a collectors scheme.
Bro, It's just one single model. It's not like he took a hammer and smashed it.
@@SolidCold value wise for me he basically did. He took something rare and limited and made it just another generic NS unit because he couldn't wait to get more NS power. If we look around NS power is all over, but these NP units are chickens teeth.
@@modelrailroadexcursions987 You aren't seeing the purpose of this video
@EpicCSX I am. I am seeing a waste of a collectible unit for something that is obviously going to be a common unit in the coming years. Impatient modeling, no matter how well done here, the rare collectible was discarded for cheap NS unit.
@@modelrailroadexcursions987 Are you suggesting he should have used a different paint scheme engine to strip the paint off?
