There has been a lot of attacks off off of western Australia. I would like to see a system where you tag sharks, and have drones flying off of beaches. It would be nice to see people warned and given time to get out of the water when there is a large Great White in the area. We should be able to handle this where we make beaches safe for sharks and people.
@jeffk464 you do realize that white sharks are very often in close proximity to people swimming, and don't attack. Therefore meaning this system you're suggesting would have people being warned to evacuate the water a ridiculous amount of times to the point it would start pissing people off.

EDIT: sky news sucks btw, this reporter shits me. I also think if you don’t want to be attacked by a shark, go to a swimming pool, not the ocean. You have a higher chance in Australia to be stung by a bluebottle jellyfish than get bit by a shark. 🤷🏻♀️
Was only ever familiar with sky from rugby coverage back in the day. Sounds to me you lots have the same problem Americans have where your media outlets are so busy playing politics games with each other and just spending their time fighting each other by pulling narratives rather than spend time doing what they are supposed to which is give reliable information. I could be wrong tho, could be just sky news but it would seem strange to me if the game was played solo.
I haven't watched cable in a decade. Everything on there is AD breaks (usually longer than programs) interrupted by BS, often called news or "interesting programs."
_I don't have a fish in the tank or dog in the race regarding this topic,_ *_I feel like both sides are insane._* As a hunter, I understand if we remove predators, even if just a few, this could lead to unfathomable *_EXPLOSIONS_* as population control is done by hunters / predators!

Sharks just *_are_* in the water. It's a fact of life! They're always there. They can't go anywhere else! It's good that numbers are up now, I hope it stabilises and you don't get overpopulated with too many whities! However, whether they know it or not, just like every hiker, *_every swimmer, every single one,_* and every person in the water no matter how shallow, has accepted that the ocean is not your home, that you are invading a lot of animals space, and that you are on their "good grace."
That said. The water is warm. Australia is known *worldwide* because unlike American incidents with the *_same species,_* there is an interesting phenomenon where by the American coast you survive mostly unharmed, there is very seldom a fatal white attack. However, for some reason, out of incidents here in Australia, a much, *_MUCH_* bigger / higher percentage are fatal!
I know there are likely a combination of factors such as water temperature, higher concentration of people constantly, very popular spots to do a lot of different water sports, including the most dangerous one, *_swimming._* 🤫
I don't care about the hysteria, *_NOR_* about the people saying there's nothing to worry about. I don't want to scare them at all, but just like walking into a jungle puts you at a risk, going into the water does as well, *_especially_* if the water is deep enough, as great whites love to torpedo prey from the deep. They also often come _relatively_ close, then make a run if decided. Another strategy that ALL the big 3 / 4 (white tip included) use is ambush from a channel or cliff, anywhere where a normal bottom turns to a cliff, channel, whatever it is, that is deeper, sometimes very substantially deeper! These are some of the spots, right at the edge of underwater cliffs, where many divers will tell you they're uncomfortable with where they are and want to stick to the bottom and / or want to do anything else, as it's equivalent to a mouse stumbling around and on it's way crossing your dogs food bowl. Yes he's not hungry and doesn't like it, but if he was starving, bye bye mouse.

Sorry for the late comment but we have plenty of guys like him on our news channels here in the USA. Is it bad I don't live in Australia but just hearing how his tone and how he was talking about sharks made me know what kind of news station Sky News was? 🫠

P.S Have you ever heard of Vic Hislop? He also pushed the 'sharks are killing machines' narrative and hunted many Great Whites. He also had a museum where it claimed the government was covering up shark attacks. Might be an interesting topic to cover if you want to feel very frustrated.

Blows my mind how people get SO angry and antagonistic over ocean animals just…existing in the ocean. As if they do so to spite us, humans. It’s honestly hard to keep myself from getting just as worked up in response- must be an ‘angry greenie’, lol. This was a challenging vid to get through for those reasons, but I appreciate your thorough coverage all the same, as always. Great work!
average of two people a year that is so much smaller than anything else, but this segment was like they were actively seeking out humans to hunt, for several hundred sharks they are pretty useless at it if they were doing it on purpose, several hundred adults that is.
I guess the bottom line is sensational headlines sell news. When has the media ever been interested in morality or truth, they choose to be ignorant because it suits them. What shocks me is the general populous's eagerness to believe every word. Good advise would seem to be do your own research and question everything.

I mean I don't think very many people actually feel outraged by the AUDACITY of sharks that they sometimes hurt/kill humans… I think that humans pay very close attention to the behavior of sharks, because sometimes we swim in the ocean, where the sharks are. It's not like people are talking about sharks like they're evil, just that as their behaviors change we all need to be aware of it. And humans are scared of sharks, as well they should, because if you're just swimming in the water where there aren't any riptides or deadly mollusks worth stepping on, at that point you're basically safe unless you're unlucky enough to catch a shark.
What I hate most about these types of news segments and all of the shark culling is that the removal of sharks has led to ACTUAL problem species that are far, FAR more likely to attack and kill people, to proliferate. Namely squid. And squid are waaaaay more terrifying and aggressive than sharks as a whole.
A plague of two deaths per year is not a plague.
Think about how many people die per year in car accidents.
This is a very poor analogy. Yes, it's dumb for them to use the term "plague" to describe sharks, but 2 a year isn't insignificant considering the fact that the vast majority of people who go to the beach barely go in the water. Surfers, snorkelers, long distance swimmers, and divers are the minority..not the norm. Comparing that to cars, where almost every single adult worker on the planet drives a car the majority of the week, is frankly insane. Obviously the things that we live with and handle on a near daily basis is going to involve more negative incidents!! This is such a mindless approach to statistics.
In fact, the interesting thing is the sharks kill as many people per year as crocodiles. Crocs are far more dangerous, to the point where people likely avoid where they live even more than sharks, yet sharks still rack up a respectable number of attacks.

Australia only has 23-24 million people, and only a small percentage of that population ever enter the ocean and only certain months of the year, so 2 a year is quite high when you factor everything in.
Sky News Australia was also suspended from RUclips for spreading misinformation about covid-19 so I think their science coverage might be a little suspect in general. Are they still owned by Rupert Murdoch? Because it felt like Fox News with an Australian accent.

Go swim near a drop off next to a sand bar long enough. Great whites kill plenty of people. The international shark attack files do not consider it an attack unless it was witnessed by someone. And the great white sharks being an apex predator are not endangered.

I think the best point you made is, they aren’t suggesting culling of crocodiles, snakes, alligators, hippos are any other animals that are also responsible for as many of not more human deaths. If you’re killed by a lion, they most likely blame You for being somewhere you shouldn’t or doing something you shouldn’t or not doing something you should have. Why isn’t it the same for sharks?

Many people do feel those animals should be culled, not least Africans who have to deal with so many dangerous creatures. Hippos and crocodiles are said to be the two animals responsible for most deaths on that continent and there are active culling programs when one of them are identified. The problem with sharks is that we can't identify which one is ''responsible'' in the vast majority of cases.

there's crocodile culling in Australia via permit. aboriginal people are allowed to hunt them. problem crocs are removed and sometimes killed. crocodiles are very dangerous and will happily stalk and eat humans. also venomous snakes are often removed or killed with a licence and country people will often kill them if they become a threat even though it's illegal to do so. venomous snakes and crocs are common in their natural habitats in Australia, most species are definitely not endangered.

Watching this a year late, but relevant as Australia is again back in our shark attack season. We've just had a few more attacks reported over the last few days, thankfully none fatal, and I will say what I always say. You are going into the shark's habitat so you have to be prepared that something may happen. Often times the people attached are surfers, who are in full wetsuits, you really can't blame the shark for thinking you're food in that situation.
Of course, we need to keep people safe if we can and in most circumstances we do. Australia does have drones and helicopters that fly over beaches during the summer and warn people if they spot sharks too close, I don't like the nets but mostly they are effective. The smart drumlines are better for the marine environment and we do have some.
Unfortunately, I don't think anything we do will ever totally stop negative human and shark interactions. You just have to accept that when you go out into the ocean a shark may be there, it is after all their home.

I live in Newcastle, Australia. we have a great white nursery here at Stockton Beach, right next to great surfing beaches. I always thought that when the Great Whites reached over 3m, they migrated to South Australia, where the big boys hang out. Obviously, some would hang out around NSW seal and Penguin colonies, but most would down the Great Australian Bite and the same for Western Australian Great Whites.

Read the CSIRO paper on white sharks, two populations split by Bass Strait. Eastern population covers from above Brisbane to Tasmania and across to NZ.
With all the drone videos along the coasts in California and Australia showing a remarkable number of GW's chilling out near people, I think it's increasingly clear that they simply have no interest in us. I'm starting to suspect that a lot of the attacks are driven by protection of food sources against a perceived rival predator. We know they will bump and threaten spear fishermen. The full attacks may simply be an escallation of aggression. Bottom line--if they wanted to eat us they would be doing it all the time because the suckers are right there all the time.

I think everyone whose interested in sharks realises a lot of these interactions are territorial. Maybe lack of food sources plays a role?
Maybe they are just considering a change in their diet from various sea creatures to beach goers. If they have evolved up to this point, who's to say where their evolving stops? Who's to say they can't evolve what their favorite flavor is? And who are you to say that they can't grow legs and use computers?
Yes, they CAN eat us at any time, hence the concern. I do wonder how some might feel if they had to surveil their own backyards for bears or wolf packs before they stepped out the door.

As an Aussie, I have never heard of either of these wankers. Most people know sharks are out there but go out and enjoy the ocean anyway. Sadly, every country has its "experts" who know very little but have an axe to grind.

I've been loving sharks since I was just a lil girl who was in elementary school, and since I discovered the Megalodon, an extinct big shark, and well in those years I've been watching a lot of videos of sharks and tribute videos of the Megalodon, and it bothers me that people hate sharks and wants them to go extinct...like why? I live in Western Australia, we had 1 fatal shark in the 60's, 3 in the 90's.Since 2000 we've had 20 fatal attacks, 6 in a 12 month period from 2011-12.

Here in Massachusetts where white sharks are also here in large numbers, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy has a sharktvity app. for your phone, alerting you when a tagged shark swims by one of their bouys and there strategically placed all along the beaches of the outer Cape, including Block Island, in Rhode Island… Alerts also pop up on the app. If a shark is seen near a beach, and let’s you know what beach!!! It really is unbelievable!!!

I’ll admit when I sent it to you I only watched half of it cause it was just so dire I couldn’t finish listening to it. I agree with you that most of the time Sky News is not that bad, but on this occasion the amount of uneducated bias was staggering.
Was just great to listen to you giving not only an informed response, but also a balanced one too. I honestly don’t think there was a point you raised that I question, particularly when it comes to shark/human interaction.

Sure, you mentioned your frustrations (which I also felt to the vid - hence the share 😂) however you did not respond in an emotional way but in a formal way with no bias, something I feel a lot of commentators these days lack. You shouldn’t apologize for getting worked up! Everything you said as a rebuttal to their discussion was common sense and appropriate.
It’s a shame common sense reasoning and statistics aren’t more commonly known. Additionally, by stating other things that endanger humans such as you mentioned- snakes, alligators is a good point to bring up for perspective.

The supreme species line made me feel a bit ill..
i have also seen these news and it made me quite angry to watch, so it was nice to hear you break it down. I have seen a documentary about shark nets and how to improve them. They did find out that a "bubble wall" may be an option. A tube which would produce bubbles would be placed along the sea floor and the sound and movement of the bubbles would hide what ever was on the other side, so the shark would not be able to pick up any movement. Trials have also shown that even tho bait was placed near the wall, the shark didn't take it.
That's really neat.

If the age of Earth was equal to one hour, humans only appeared in the last second. 30 seconds ago humans wouldn't even be imaginable.
The Greens are pretty horrible here in Australia and I say this as someone who is a borderline environmentalist. The Greens probably do more harm to the environment than they help. For instance they helped push through bans on back burning and making back burning more difficult. This is a big part of why we get these massive uncontrollable bushfires because of so much build up of undergrowth.
Also, yeah I cringed too at the supreme species line.

I really like your balanced approach to these issues. You acknowledge that we have needs and rights, but so do the animals. It's all too easy in these debates for someone to take a very polarized position that just holds up either our own rights or that of the animals/ecosystem.
I just discovered your channel today, the first video I saw was what happened when people tried to keep great white sharks in aquariums and I was hooked (no pun intended😂) I just wanted to say I’ve been binge watching your videos and you are doing great things for sharks by spreading real science and dispelling all of the garbage that’s out there. I used to charter fish , if we were losing too many fish to sharks , I had a fool proof method to put a stop to it ; I'd move the boat and go fish somewhere else. The Ocean is pretty big.

He is the type of person that would sanction the hunting of sharks to extinction then complain to the government when the fishing industry crashes. It’s definitely been shown, if you remove sharks, you will not have a healthy fish population. But sadly, a lot of people don’t buy that!

Totally agree with you Kris! This topic upsets me as well. Humans have got to stop thinking they’re the most important species. Every species is priceless and needed. More education about safe swimming practices, sharks in general and safe shark repellent is a great start.

Anyone who chooses to swim in shark infested water deserves whatever they get. It's very, very, very to easy to avoid ever being bitten or eaten by one. Just stay out of their water unless you're on a boat.

Shark Bytes, I'm gonna be honest, I was gonna lose my mind when I saw the title until I noticed the quotation marks. Great commentary on this problem. What ticked me off the most was the egregious enforcement of the word "Plague" when referring to a natural occurrence.
The word plague means disease, it is actually many times a natural occurrence.
Being attacked by a shark is a personal risk you incur by entering the ocean.
I'm old enough to remember the worldwide culling of Great Whites after the movie "Jaws" was released. People went mad with fear and deemed the sharks to be mindless killers. So it makes me happy to see the Great White population finally starting to bounce back.
So. I've always wondered this--
When we talk about White Shark or really any shark population, how do we know the numbers? For instance, do we only count the numbers that are tagged, or are we guessing how many are also not tagged as well? Also, migration. If one gets tagged in Eastern Australia, but moves to Western Australia for a year or so, does that count for both populations of White Sharks? If someone knows, I'd love to hear how the numbers get tallied. I've tried to look this up, but I never get an explanation of how.

He even had an idea of the number of sharks out there - how did those numbers sound big to him?!

I'm so embarrassed as an Ozzie that this was on air. We don't all think like this. Most realise that we swim in there water so we invade their territory and occasionally an unfortunate incident happens and a human life is lost. Which is always sad. We have many more dangerous animals living in and around our houses!!!! I love sharks and understand that when I go into the ocean ... ocean animals live there and we may encounter them !!!

Wouldn't it make more sense to limit the number of beaches for human use? If certain beaches were protected with beach monitoring, nets etc, and other coastline beaches were preserved for wildlife and surfers who want to take the risks, maybe it would help.

There probably lies the biggest interest in influencing the popular political opinion. i wish sharks weren't hated this much for absolutely no reason. i feel like this all started from Jaws where people believed that everytime you go into the ocean, sharks are gonna be a problem when it's really not true. sure some sharks may be more aggressive but it's not the majority. honestly, I'm more scared of dolphins than I am sharks.

@@seanslattery6366 just because something won’t eat you doesn’t mean there’s no reason to be afraid of it? Dolphins are known to kill _for fun_ and while their intelligence and curiosity leads to many positive interactions with them, they can and do attack humans, though their attacks on humans are less likely to be fatal than shark attacks.
Aside from that, something doesn’t even have to be dangerous for someone to be afraid of it. There are plenty of phobias around to prove that.

You are wrong. There are only around ten deaths per year from sharks when tens of millions at least swim in oceans. Falling coconuts, which kill 150 people a year are more of a threat to us than sharks.

I couldn't even finish watching this... on rare occasions like this, the attitude of mankind to the environment and to endangered animals utterly revolts me!
I am also a marine biologist. I've worked in the field for the last 14+ years. It's a fair point to note that the historical behavior data doesn't seem to indicate that Great White Sharks (GWS) are specifically targeting humans as a prey source. However... the frequency and intensity of humans utilizing the ocean for recreation has increased quite a bit over the last 50+ years... and fish stocks have decreased exponentially from overharvest over the last 50+ years. This has led to sharks foraging for food closer and closer to areas utilized by humans for recreation. The decline in fish stocks has also pushed GWS's primary prey source (small marine mammals) closer to areas used by people for recreation. A great example of this is the Cape Cod area in New England of the Eastern Coast of the United States. I said all of that to say this... one of the key reasons we believe GWS's do not see us as a prey source, is because they are unfamiliar with us. And predators tend to avoid things they are unfamiliar with. As shark to human interactions increase and they become more and more "familiar" with us... it is also likely to assume their skittish behavior around us will evolve into a more inquisitive/exploratory behavior (this transition can be observed in a number of dive videos where large tiger sharks appear to be hesitant to interact with people initially... but over time grow bolder and more inquisitive. You can also see those people fending those sharks off... diverting them away from potential exploratory bites). Which in my opinion... will be when they decide that humans are an adequate prey item. While we do not contain as much calorie rich fat as our sea lion counter parts... we are an extremely easy meal in the water. I've tried to summarize quite a lot... it's very possible that I left some key information out. I'm more than willing to discuss this further. It's a very interesting problem... especially when you start to include the depredation component to the discussion. The historical data may not be adequate in addressing the question we're trying to answer considering how rapidly environmental conditions are changing in the oceans around the world.
Saying " we are supreme species" is a disrespect to who we really are and where we came from.

As a Floridian, the thing that struck me about the fisherman not repelling sharks is that he's also teaching apex predators to associate people/boats with food. It was drilled into our heads growing up in a swampy/lakey part of the state that a fed alligator is a dead alligator because they WILL start to attack once they figure out humans=easy tasty nomnoms, and he's complaining about a problem he's out there doing his part to CAUSE. Great job at victim blaming in advance.
