Back in the 1990s, Virginia Power (Now Dominion Power) ran an electric vehicle program for high schools across the state. I was taking auto tech at the time. One of my teachers donated a 1st gen VW Scirocco. We gutted it, built a roll cage, installed a seat, motor, esc, and battery system and competed at Richmond Raceway with other electric vehicles. It was pretty much the best thing that happened in high school.

This is very inspiring. I hope Genius Garage goes much further and keeps breaking every mold in the car scenes.

this is like formula SAE on steroids! hundreds of schools do something similar to this within their own series so definitely look that up if anyone is here saying "Dam I wish my school/future school does this" because you can do some crazy stuff and make a lot of great friends doing it

I think formula student is way more advanced than what they did. Engineering a car that complies to all of the SAE rules, simulating aerodynamics and the chassis and of course building a carbon fiber monocoque is way harder than reworking an existing car.

@@RedHatMedia I'd say they have different complexities in their own right, but regardless both programs are fantastic for us students to learn some good stuff

      @@BaioWithMayo That's certainly true.

@@RedHatMedia it doesn't necessarily have to be a CF monocoque...our team ran a space frame. Some stressed skin panels. And CF control arms. But still, i get what you're saying. Plus the chassis design can be changed every 2 or 3 years rather than every year. Plus aero isn't necessary. Depends on how complicated you want the car to be. If you're a new team you can run something simple with a single cylinder engine.

Have you looked at Formula Student? We do it in the UK and it's fantastic for students and race teams.. End up racing at Silverstone against a lot of international teams.
