I watched in dread fascination, the rise of Donald Trump. I understand why he was elected.
I was even more fearful at his choice for VP. Mike Pence.
I viewed Pence's role in the coming administration as insurance for the Pentagon and pro-war factions within the government.
If Trump swims against the interests of these giant entities that controll the military congressional industrial complex, one way or another, Donald Trump will not survive his first term in office.
To sum it up, I am even more fearful of Mike Pence than I am of Donald Trump.

He was a Lutheran prior to become a Catholic, which is a far different breed of Christian than the evangelical you pegged him as. Furthermore, his publication, First Things, was perhaps the sole periodical of intellectual thought on the religious right, giving column space to topics ranging from foreign policy, bioethics, and war theory.
It's not about agreeing with their positions, or conclusions. First Things (and Fr. Neuhaus) offered the rarest of gifts in our uncivil discourse: solid intellectual foundation. There was no talk of "bad guys." Sadly, lost in much of today's debate of values is the true beast that plagues us, that of anti-intellectualism. It's the foundation for climate change denial, bigotry, and cruelty. Whatever Fr. Neuhaus as his works were, at least they came with weight.
