My mother gave my father a leather bound book of Robert W. Service poems when they were first married in 1927 titled The Spell of the Yukon. Both my sister & I committed Sam McGee, Dan Mcgrew & Bessie's Boil to memory growing up. Fun memories!!

Oh, Christine, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.
Robert Service's work was a major part of my childhood. My father Douglas Grant used to recite Service's poetry, which he had memorized, and I still remember how I would shiver with pleasure as my father's deep, gravelly voice recited ...
"There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold ... The Arctic trails have their secret tales that would make your blood run cold. The northern lights have seen queer sights but the queerest they ever did see was that night on Lake LeBarge I cremated Sam McGee
"Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee..." and my imagination was captured. I could listen to him for hours ..." and I loved the climax when "then the door I opened wide, And there sat Sam looking cool and calm in the heat of the furnace roar ... and he wore a smile you could see a mile and he said, 'Please close that door. It's fine in here but I greatly fear you'll let in the cold and storm. Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm."
Sadly, my father died when I was 18, but my father and Robert Service's poetry remains a precious memory.
Watching this video of your father Tom Byrne talking about Robert Service and listening to his poetry is a precious gift to me.
      Vanessa Grant

I come from Kilwinning, Scotland where Robert W. Service grew up, his grandfather worked in the postoffice. There is a memorial to him here . I didnt realise how big he was in the US and Canada. Another poet from here that did well over there was James Montgomery. I was amazed hearing Johnny Cash reading The Cremation of Sam McGhee. :-)

I think my growing up in Canadian wilderness hooked me on the far frontiers and Mother introduced me to Robert Service. In August of 1997 my wife and I RV'd to Alaska through Dawson City where we watched a Tom Byrne show. While waiting for show time we chatted with Tom. He noticed I had his DVD and offered to autograph it. He did, Aug 27 1977. The crowd was smaller than in this one, still extremely enjoyable. In the same area learned a little more about Jack London that wrote many novels based in Yukon. That only half his original cabin was there, the other half was used at his home here in the Napa Valley. Two very good writers. I got a lot of satisfaction when I stood on the Marge of Lake LaBarge as Tom's words came to my mind.
On another trip we learned Tom no longer recited at the Service cabin, he separated from the sponsor and moved to a place on Front Street. If he was still giving recitals I don't know.
