- The reefing season is back with a vengeance! There have been multiple frag swaps & club meeting, meeting up with local hobbyists, the reef aquarium activities have definitely picked up again! This video covered a lot of grounds; first I finally fragged the Bahamallama Weeping Willow Leather Coral, accidentally fragged the Jokercorals New York Knicks Gold Torch in halves, received the absolutely gorgeous ACI King Hammer, picked up corals from Reef Nerd Aquatics, Telegraham, and boxed_reef. Visited local fish store the House of Tropicals, and finally addressing the Asterina Starfish in the reef tank by the means of Harlequin Shrimp with a slight twist. I hope you enjoy this video, it has been fun cutting it together!

Leon is the cutest!!❤
Torches are the best
we really went from leon not even being able to walk, to leon giving good commentary in 2023! i hope we will see him do a water change or a store tour eventually 😎
It’s insane the way prices have increased in this hobby over a short period of time
Amen to that. I know in life prices are going to change but the tidal wave of increased coral pricing is ridiculous. Gsp is average 15-25 dollars for a frag. Coral market is based on hype now vs coral propagation for the future.
I agree, I understand that shipping has gone up dramatically and I'm not sure if it came back down... but after a certain point I feel like it just becomes an excuse to keep the price up there. 😂
@Inappropriate Reefer yeah it's almost to the point now where shipping is the cheap part of coral selling lol
I just stick to local swaps or clubs. I'll let the Lfs eat the costs lol
House of tropicals is known for being overpriced. It’s bad, but not that bad
Fish babies in refugium !
thanks for the content
Thank you for spending the time to watch!
Good job on the flatworms and recovery on the tank.
Have a number of leathers and toadstools, weeping willows.
The one in the cage will attach to the cage. It never fails.
Good luck,
Chris
So cute, and funny the kids involvement.
Have plenty large weeping willows. It likes high flow high light, but not all the way. Very fast growing. The neon green version grows about 1/4 the rate.
Love your tank - I'm jealous - that LFS looks really nice.
Your son has already spent all your money in that LFS 😂 “Dad I want to buy it” bless him 😂 , tanks looking good 👍🏻
One reason I would never do one of those trend video, "I buy everything my son wants to buy at a LFS!"
@@InappropriateReefer imagine 😂😂😂
I prefer the Knicks torch since I'm a LPS reefer. Cheers!
The color of the knicks torch is nice, but during this video I think the weeping willow started to win me over. I’d say willow over torch, the ones in the open top box just looked so nice and happy.
Yeah! I think it's time to let the caged one into the open top box as well; they attached super fast.
Yummy! Double triple yum yum!
Second option is the best one lol I had the same problem
Wow. My king hammer from ACI was super tiny. Must be nice 😉
Tank looks great. Always look forward to your updates. 🙏
Luck of the draw I think! ACI didn't know their Torch would end up in my system through Reef Nerd Aquatics... although now that may, lol. Did yours have a similar coloration even though tiny?
@Inappropriate Reefer it wasn't tiny. But smaller. Definitely luck of the draw. But yes. The coloration is beautiful. Definitely similar to the pictured ones they posted. I also got the princess and queen. The princess was tiny for sure. Colors are not the same but I'd assume once it grows I'll start seeing the same colors they pictured. At least I hope. Queen was same size as king and colors are dull but see the potential.
My Princess that came in with Mok-Yi’s King was super tiny. Baby Princess.
@telegraham gotcha. I figured they would vary. Just picking. Mine is looking better day by day.
I would really really like to have a frag of the whipping willow here in Germany. I haven't seen one for years
4:30 awhhh is he saying "I wanna buy it"
That store is very expensive compared to NY
Surprising as I thought things in NY would be more expensive!
The star fish do this every night even without the shrimp
Hi! How did u get the containers for the corals?
We eat spiny lobster in Florida but they are brown
Don’t put superglue on it, especially after fragged, it will slime and higher chance to decay. Rubble or tiles or frag plugs in a magnetic box near top, cover if needed, get some flow going through.
Solid tip, thank you!! 🙏
Few days ago i watched your flatworm video and thinking hoe ive never had them before. Then today i Just bought a new frag of hammer today and in the car i looked and saw a huge euphyllia eating flatworm on it. Dipped it and looked at it under macro lens and saw probably 30 eggs. Tried using a toothbrush and brushing them but didnt work so i just used scissors and scraped the skeleton till no eggs were seen.
Ooooff not fun but glad you caught it early! Yeah dipping and scraping eggs seems to be the way to go. I’d dip it once a week for a few weeks just in case.
I am having so much, VERY lot, with my hammers! I went to my last wamas meeting, but was a bit overwhelmed and afraid to look like an idiot. I can come up and take and orphaned bits (of anything but hammers)!
Beth right?? It was so very nice to meet you and Eddie last time!! Dieon said there’s another reef club further south that you all belong to right?
@@InappropriateReefer yes! We have really enjoyed it a lot. I just love Deone. Poor guy os married to my younger wonder twin. Lol. I think you left before the raffle, right? I won all (really all) of the corals
@@elizabethwatson71 LOL!! Perfect as it sounds like you have a large tank to fill!! (and congrats!!)
@@InappropriateReefer thanks. I’m starting at one end and working down
That place is expensive 😮
The price of corals there have always been a bit high, fish price tend to be better; I'll try to show that the next time I return!
Beautiful shrimp but you might miss those stars brother. I got a shrimp removed all of them and I swear my tank started to suffer with the lack of extra cleanup crew there a pain in the ass and risky, but I think they get nooks and crannies and eat a lot of crap that we don’t want it or tank.
Legit concern actually. I was thinking to add a few snails to compensate but you're right, snails won't be able to get into the nooks and crannies. Hmm..
@@InappropriateReefer hey bud since I know you are reading these I just want to say Awesome job getting the tank back on track and overcoming your little SPS crash! For some that would of been enough to throw in the towel. Stoked for you dude and yes your tank looks as good if not better now! Thanks for the hard work on the videos too.
0:52 How did you automate your bubble scrubbing? Air pump on a timer every day?
yes sir, I have a lime wood airstone tucked under the return pump in the sump that goes off twice a day for ~10 mins each time. Should probably scrub for longer but haven't really messed with it since I put it into service.
Thanks I’ve never tried bubble scrubbing I’ll have to give it a go!
0:37 sorry for being dumb but what unit of measurement is that for light 300 what?
Hi! Where did you get the box? I need one to acclimate a frag of a leather coral too.
Both my small one and larger ones came from PNW Custom, great product that does not take up sand bed space! Another budget tip I just picked up from @bayarea_reef on IG is to use 3" net pot for hydroponic, pair it with a 2" round coral frag tile (should fit perfectly), that acts as the perfect mushroom cage. Or instead of the frag tile, you could use rock rubble. I thought this was genius.
Sup bro , What’s the black basket called ? Dope video
Hey man, search for plants net pot on Amazon, or hydroponic pot; this is the ones I use: 50 PCS 3 Inch Heavy Duty Net... www.amazon.com/dp/B08CGVL9FW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
couldn't u sell/keep those starfish for people who want to own harlequin shrimp?
It will be interesting if your theory is right #chemicalwarfare
I thought you had a harlequin couple months ago, did. you give it away?
I had a pair 2-3 years ago, did not last though, hind sight I think it was the Silver Bellied Wrasse...
You sure thats a weeping willow? looks like regular long polyp leather the weeping willows have very long thin polyps and will all hang and droop straight down with no flow not bashing you just curious I've been looking for a frag for awhile and theres a ton of people claiming long polyp leather as it when they are trying to sell
Fair question and Remy addressed this in one of his videos too; while his morph got Jake's blessing for the naming convention, he also recognized that the polyps doesn't seem to droop off the edge when there is no flow, that's why I always call it the Bahamallama Weeping Willow for distinction -- just in case! Either way it's a cool coral with a cool back story, with the name blessing from the legend who started the trend!
@@InappropriateReeferthats cool to know the back story and yes its still a good looking coral thanks for the info
Do you still have a Frag of the Weeping Willow ? I would like to purchase one. Let me know
I stopped going to house of tropicals because of their prices. Its ridiculous now.
Interesting use of harlequin shrimp. Remove the wrasse. They love shrimps.
But.. wrasse’s so good at keeping potential pests at bay! I wish they’re easy to catch like my tangs so I could shuttle him in and out as needed
@Inappropriate Reefer water bottle with inverted top with mysis inside ....theyll go in and get stuck ...got a few fish traps and still use this method bc it works easier
I love wrasses. But wrasses love them shrimp. Sounds like maybe the water bottle and mysis fish trap might work. Keep track for us of the numbers daily of asterinas you keep collecting. Keep putting a few in your sump with the harlequin to keep him fed.
@@Sammy31Dee This may be the move
why is the shrimp that expesive tho? are the hard to breed? or just greedy.
They have always been up there in price.. tend to be around the $40-range before the pandemic but the price jumped for everything since.
70$ for a shrimp In the fuge holy
Dude! You have kids. Let the Asterina eat the Zoas! It's time for us to collectively get rid of Palys and Zoas. We don't need them in the hobby. When my wife became pregnant for the first time the Zoas and Plays moved out. Maybe I'm being overbearing but It's my beef.
Cheers,
Chris
You wanna sell.any of those? 😅
HOT has become way overpriced on there corals over the years !
I frag leathers semi often....I put the frags in a crushed coral basket ....week later they're attached to rubble and can be glued to plug ....they can melt from bottom out if using glue on fresh cut frags
Thank you for the solid tip, and did not know about glue on fresh cut frags melting the attachment point. This could explain my past failed attempt. Thanks!
Would you sell me a frag?
Will be happy to trade when I am able to pull more frags! (esp if you are local to the DC area)
