  • ROA's legislation and military policy director Matthew Schwartzman delivers remarks at WWP's July 10 press conference urging the passage of the Major Richard Star Act. Under this legislation, veterans who were medically retired from the military with less than 20 years of service and are eligible for Combat-Related Special Compensation would no longer have their military retirement reduced by an offset that is nothing short of an outrage.

After 17 years 10 months, 8 combat tours in 4 countries
I was on my last tour of Afghanistan and came back, forced to medically retire. I wanted to do 30 years……but my career got cut short. Wish this would pass…..it would help my family a lot.

Stop sending $$ to the Taliban and Ukraine, stop giving more to illegals coming into the country and take care of the home front first

I read you loud and clear battle! Those who have not served, like those in Congress, do not know the feeling of proudly serving your country, being deployed over and over again, THEN sustain injuries so bad that we are forced to retire (calling us “Unfit for Duty”). Initially, when you hear that you will be medically retired, you are convinced that you will receive your pension (military retirement pay)… but for those of us retiring with “less than 20 years” don’t receive it whatsoever! The language that prevents us from receiving our retirement is those key words “less than 20 years of service” which was written years before GWOT. As a matter of fact, if the President didn’t amend the current legislation back in 2006, medical retirees (Ch. 61) wouldn’t even be eligible for CRSC pay. This Richard Star Act is just as important to those of us who were injured in Combat fighting for our country… as the PACT Act was when it was recently signed into law (08/10/2022) for diseases we NOW have due to the toxic exposures like Burn Pits and depleted uranium while deployed to the Southwest Asia (Gulf War region and others)! Although I am thankful for the passing of the PACT Act, I truly believe that legislation would also be a stalemate, similar to the Richard Star Act, had the celebrity John Stewart not fight SO hard for it to be passed (oh yeah, also because Pres. Biden’s son was directly affected by the same toxic exposures as he died from brain cancer). If our damn country can’t stop “accidentally” sending hundreds of millions of dollars to Afghanistan & Iraq, reduce the spending to support the war in Ukraine (perhaps by a billion dollars), the funding is right there! As a matter of fact, the estimated funding for the amount of Disabled Military Retirees that actually fall in this bucket is approximately 16,000 Veterans (again, not ALL Veterans that discharge actually qualify for this)! It’s a shame that ANY elected member of Congress can only serve 1 term (2 years) and will receive full pension from the Government and FREE Medical/Dental for themselves and their dependents for LIFE… and YES, there are WAY more in that bucket receiving anywhere from 50-80% of their final salary (from $169,000 up towards $249,00+) while majority of these members are wealthy businessmen/women. You never heard about any of them declining this retirement benefit due to their enormous wealth that out surpasses the average American/Veteran!
We NEED to hold our Congressmen accountable by writing to them and telling them to bring this up for Vote or LOSE our Vote!
