Heavy Metal Mecha Bowser doesn’t qualify as a boss because it’s not actively trying to kill you like Megaleg was. It’s just minding its own business, not even reacting when you remove its arm. Plus there’s a Launch Star, clearly even the game itself considers it just a planet.
Really? According to the gearmos Mecha bowser kidnapped 4 of them himself which seems pretty antagonistic. There’s also bosses like bootlegger boggie from Cuphead where the boss isn’t technically trying to kill you for some of it too. And the launch star thing? Sorbetti from Galaxy 2 has a sling star on it before the fight starts so I don’t think that’s fair either. Mecha bowser is more of a boss than Megaleg and I will die on that hill. Thanks for watching the video! I hope you enjoyed it!
I'll kill you on that hill. Megaleg is much more animate that Heavy Metal Mecha Bowser. It walks and actively tries to stomp on you. While HMMB is effectively stationary and doesn't respond you in any way. It just stays in place moving its parts back and forth constantly.
This was a well structured video that posed a very interesting question! I always wondered how many levels could be beat without the use of power-ups. Now that you bring attention to it though, it really is bizarre how limited their use is in the game.
Yeah, Galaxy 2 literally uses the boo and spring mushrooms once each and at that point why even bring them back? At least the cloud flower was great as broken as it was and I honestly liked the other new powerups too
3:20 Yessss, someone else whose favorite ever power up is the SMG ice flower. I tried the skip in Ghostly 1 once, pretty much gave up instantly lol. Kudos for grinding it out. Subbed for the good taste and great videos.
I did this challenge about 5 years ago, and since then a lot of strategies have been found. I would highly recommend watching Purple Sun’s older videos as they show the possibilities of TAS. Also Ghostly Galaxy 1 is actually pretty easy with Luigi since there is a place you can stand under the ledge that has a visual cue. It doesn’t work with Mario which meant I had to do this trick too in another one of my runs (no power ups, coins, star bits, or killing enemies), and I can confirm that it is painful.
I watched quite a few purple sun videos in preparation for this video and since I posted it the totals have been lowered to 12 for single player and 7 for co star due to two more TAS tricks (sand spiral is doable with costar and freezeflame 3 ic flower skip is doable in single player). Thanks for watching my video! I’ve seen a lot about you in the challenge community so I’m glad to see you here!
It actually can be done with Mario! Usually, as Luigi you'd backflip and hold left, but as mario, you can backflip and spin in the right place so you don't bonk on a wall, hold left and hope you land on the ledge. It is pretty difficult, but doable!
I was always interested in this sort of thing and I'm so glad this video exists tbh I remember even in my semi-casual playthroughs a decade ago, I hated the spring mushroom so much that I wanted to see if I could skip it whenever possible, and I was pretty much able to bypass it in every mission in both games - with exception of that triple jump in Toy Time, which I thought was the only required use (Edit: I don't remember what I ended up doing for Matter Splatter; either I used Co-Star mode, or forgot about that mission entirely. I did use a solo Co-Star mode for Beachcombing which I remember took around 15 minutes of attempts)
@ When I was a little kid those parts were hard but they were always fun. I just wish they made a harder track whenever I replay Galaxy I beat them first try.
I loved the two galaxies built around the ball, especially rolling gizmo. I remember trying that level for HOURS as a kid. I just don’t think the ball being in Melty molten fits
@@seth8395 powerups are items that give Mario new abilities AND transform him in some way. Do you consider the turnips you can pull out of the ground in Mario 2 to be powerups? So… It does seem like an Any% No Powerups run is very possible. With some more optimizations (And Co-Star mode), there is potential for a 100% No Powerups run in the future. Though some big things will have to be found for it to happen.
Well yeah lol, even to a casual player. A good portion of the stars in the game don’t even have mandatory powerups in the firstplace. Might be a significant challenge for galaxy 2 because of it’s galaxy layout though.
Nope, just recorded about 80% of the footage ahead of time and worked an idea around what I had. Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate the consistent comments; helps with the algorithm:)
8:15 I am almost certain this is posible even without shore launch because this is how the level works in the kaizo version. I don't know if the coins are changed in the kaizo but if not it is posible
@@Snowman-xt1cda TAS likely can’t move Luigi while in mid-air but would be able to line up each slide in the most accurate possible way. As for whether or not it could get every coin, I doubt it. Too many are over the void.
Throwing my hat in the ring: Despite that, storywise it's meant to be one, Mechabowser's "attacks" are too inconsistent to make it a boss. It's more like that DLC Cookatiel level in Captain Toad, where you run down an obstacle course while it chases you
Yeah I’d argue that’s a boss too; Fowl Play is the boss level in world 3 of Little Big Planet 2 and you don’t actually attack it at all; just run away the whole time. If I consider that to be a boss (which I do) then HMMB is too
Purplesun did a video on Freezeflame 3 final section with no ice flower. I think it did use a co star jump, so it only matters if you're using co star. Edit: Sea slide p is also possible, and it only requires one shore launch/co star jump! Edit 2: hellomynameisnim did a video on Sand Spiral powerupless. You won't believe how ridiculous it is. So, all in all, with co star, you need 12 powerups to 100% it: One fire flower in freezeflame 3, one boo mushroom in boo's boneyard, one red star in gateway 2, another fire flower in snow cap, one bee mushroom in honeyclimb, and one rainbow star in gusty garden. And then again with Luigi. And you can do matter splatter with a co star jump. 12 powerups isn't bad, and it could get lower in the future.
I learned about freezeflame and sand spiral right after releasing the video but I didn’t know about sea slide. That brings it all the way down to 6 powerups with co star. Thanks for the info! And actually freezeflame 3 is doable without costar which reduces the single player total down to 12
@@Snowman-xt1cd At least with luigi, most of the purple coins are reachable because the clouds work the same way the purple flowers do; you can jump of of them for a handful of frames. There's only one thats out of reach, it's the middle of an arc of coins somewhere between the big yoshi egg looking thing and the mangrove tree, which you can use a shore launch/ co star jump to get. The only video I could find on it used a ton of co star jumps and shore launches, but only to look cool and for a cleaner route ig; most of them aren't required. well if the game forces you to grab a power up. like that rainbow star.. you could just stand there and let the star expire without moving. because at that point it dont kill anything. or remove pointy things.... easy to get star!
Well I still consider that grabbing a powerup and even if I didn’t for some reason that still wouldn’t help me since just picking up a powerup and letting the timer run out on it doesn’t help anywhere in the game as far as I know
Pretty much exactly the same reaction as your other comment but this time it’s even more crazy and actually lowers the co star number to 7 and the single player total to 12. This also means the ice flower is the first and so far only Mario Galaxy powerup that is not required to 100% the game. Of course it had to be my favorite one…
