I got a TinySA Ultra to play with. I got an ADE-25 mixer to try this video out and used a MAX2870 signal gen set to 977MHz as Kerry said and it works well. I don't have nice equipment as many of viewers and Kerry have so my tinkering is at a hobby level.

Kerry thx for taking the time and sharing this information. I didn't know that a TG could be this easy and so low cost. It certainly adds a major dimension to what an SA can do with regard to characterizing through crkts.
Now I'll get on the hunt for suitable components to build a TG.

Nice simple solution Kerry especially if you're just doing occasional characterizations. Surprisingly flat output; makes me appreciate even more having a built-in TG and the ability to normalize before measuring. Well done!

Nice job, this is genuinely inspiring for me -- I have a crazy plan that might involve about 13 minicircuits modules; seeing that they work as well as they say they do makes it seem less risky!

Hi Kerry, I have a Tektronix 494p and would love to utilize a tracking generator like this to test my homemade antennas for RC video transmitting. The frequencies I’m interesting in testing are @ 5.8ghz. Do you think something like this could work for my purposes? Thanks for the great content!
Hello, I have a Rhode and Schwarz Fsl3 spectrum analyzer. and when I send a 0dBm signal to its input, the tracking signal is distorted at the beginning of the band, from 9khz to around 100khz, and tends towards 0dBm by increasing the frequency.
I don't have any diagram. Can you direct me to the function that could be faulty? Thanks a lot.

hi ken this is dennis.I have an old wiltron sweep generator. i found out that it is out of calibration. When i key in 50 mhz both the scope and spectrum analyzer will read 74mhz. do you know anything on how to calibrate it.

I might have missed this-but you talk about the signal gen being phase-locked to the analyser but I don't see how you have done that. It looks to be a free-running signal source. Please show me where I'm missing out here.
I used the 10MHz output from the SA as the reference to the sig gen.
Why would you add a tracking generator to a tracking generator? Since when was the HP 8566B a tracking generator - I thought it was a spectrum analyzer. Maybe I'm just missing something totally and misreading your dsescription?
Are you familiar with the TG6000 made for the HP8566B and other SA's? I bought one several years ago and it has been excellent. The dynamic range is ~85dB but considering the 8566B does not have a TG, it certainly adds new utility to an otherwise outstanding SA. The TG6000 is currently produced product by DS Instruments; cost is well under $1K

I saw it before, but it's considerably more expensive then this simple hack. For what I am doing though, the performance of my setup is adequate.
