Wow I can't believe how fast they can go.
Yeah, I thought it was a bit excessive, but they are sub contractors so they need to make the bales as fast as possible to get the job done to get paid and get to the next job. "Make Hay while the Sun shines" ring a bell?
It certainly does. And frankly everyone who makes bales needs to make them as fast as possible, not just subcontractors. The weather is never on your side when there's hay lying down.
Not the biggest of rows and you need to keep the bale chamber full to make a better bale!
Windrows are small. If the bale chamber isn't kept full it just keeps beating the hay or straw

They are getting plenty of hay from that field and in another month they can do the same thing once more and put out plenty of hay again. I love those Ford tractors, and the New Holland bailers they are using.
It'll take a bit more than a month to get another cut from that field. As they're baling straw not hay. 😉
Dat sound ad that smoke. Like my TM150 with 230 HP. What did tgey made for this Power? I just build in the Turbo of the tm190 and made something at the Fuelpreassure
Good tractor the 190's just do away with the boost and set her to the full power then they don't give bother

Why does the engine periodically rev up then back down again at around 3:50? Does the baling implement require more engine power every 1 or 2 seconds?

yes, @4:50 you can hear that the machine compresses the hay every few seconds, this works with ah piston that moves forward and backwards, an every time the hay is compressed the piston has to be accelerated again and that needs power from the engine so its always rev. up and down every 2 to 3 seconds ;) sorry for bad english🙈
As Simon Eder mentioned, yes it does. Big square balers have a big flywheel on the main driveline that's supposed to help even out the power load, but it's not quite perfect.
I like how the puffs are just about in step with each other when they're coming down the field side by side.

Is there a sporadic high load put on the tractor for the engine to smoke like that?
Ya, seems to match the cycle on the baler just before it moves the bale.
Yes, because baler doesn't compress the straw continuously, but it presses it in "steps" and everytime you see engine smoke, thats when the baler compresses the straw.
Thanks for such a great explanation, and good to learn about the use of a flywheel in the latest balers. I was so busy watching the tractor and wondering about that pulsing that I completely overlooked the power requirements of the baler they were towing. After reading your comment it all made sense apart from how fast they were going. Then again being sub contractors they need to make the bales to turn the $$$ over.
Mark, to put this in context... the 8210 was rated around 100 hp, which was already the very top of that tractor range. These guys have the thing strung out to 200 hp (as the video claims). That would still not be a large amount of power in front of that baler. It's quite phenomenal to watch the tractor put up with that kind of punishment.
joe The older tractors have alot more torque than new ones, even though it might just have the rated power the torque number is more than enough to take the punishment. The TM150 you see here are the last New Holland/Fords to be complete raw power and torque!
What do they do to the tractors to make the black smoke come out the exhaust?

At a guess a combination of bigger turbo, injectors and fuel pump....maybe even an engine swap from a TW
Rob Thompson isnt the oldie n/a stock?.Nu one ecu remap,up boost more juice,and or a bigger turb
Liam Walsh 8210 is a NA engine from the factory, 110 hp, then they put on a turbo, and preferable an intercooler with a fan on it, in addition to injection pump - adjustment, to give more fuel, and voila! A lot more power, and a lot!!! more torque. If you have some knowledge, iis easy to double the power output from a NA engine with mechanical injection pump. Cheers!
