    Good education here. Danny is 100% correct - BUT. Magnepan designed this as a desktop speaker system. It is intended for one ear level position. It is also sold with a bass panel that connects to the two satellite speakers that are all you have here. I'm sure there still be a mixed response, but they need to be used with the full design to get a true feel for their response.

      Exactly. I've owned these for 8 years. If used correctly as near field speakers they are outstanding. Correctly is the operative word. When driven with a powerful 4 ohm stable amp and the bass panel dialed in and backed up with high end sub(s) such as REL, this is a killer near field system.
      Why did I go nearfield? Because the 2 rooms available as listening rooms in my home were acoustic hellholes. I could either spend stupid amounts of money rectifying the situation or do this alternative. Was it successful? I haven't shopped speakers for 8 years.

    As others have pointed out, these are designed for use with one or two DWM bass panels. One comes with the Mini Maggies. Using them without is like using a tweeter without a woofer!
    Also, these are nearfield speakers. They're designed to sit on your desk, up close to you. When you're in the near field, you aren't affected by the beaming. They just aren't going to work right if everything isn't set up that way. I've heard them set up properly, and they sound amazing!

    • @joppepeelen

    • @todd8155

      Problem with the DWM bass panels is that they are designed to sit under the desk, and bass is directional above 100 Hz or so, so that's not really a solution as you aren't going to hear the 100 to 300 Hz band very well. Now if you take the DWM panel and mount it on the wall above the monitor pointed at your head, or put one on each side of the monitor pointed at your head, then that would be great!
      I am using Monsoon flat panel speakers crossed at 180 Hz, and a Velodyne HGS-10 servo sub crossed at 80 Hz. For the 80 to 180 Hz band I have 2 Yamaha YST-SW60 7" servo sub woofers that sit behind the flat panel speakers on the desk. I use a DSP to time align the drivers, set crossovers, and do parametric equalization. It's a tri-amplified desktop system. Bottom line, I want the DWM bass panels to replace my Yamaha YST-SW60 woofers and cover the 80 to 200 Hz band!
      I have so far only adjusted my system by ear using the DSP (it's incredibly flexible), but am considering a measuring system with microphone to see how close my ears are and to fine tune. I am considering upgrading my Dayton Audio DSP-408 to something better. I would also consider active analog crossover, or maybe even a passive crossover as Danny seems to prefer them over any DSP solution. I wonder about using a DSP system with measuring mic as a test bed to figure out optimum crossover points for a later passive crossover design.

    • @Josh442
      @Josh442 2 года назад

      @@todd8155 Cool setup! I have some Monsoons as well, and I find that I don't localize the woofer when it's off to my left. Under other circumstances I *can* localize it. I've noticed that localization at 300 Hz is kind of funny that way, sometimes it's an issue, sometimes not. Anyway, the DWM's I heard with the Mini Maggies were under the desk (2 for stereo) and they worked great.
      DSP measurements -- Room EQ Wizard will do what you want, very powerful and free! All you need is an inexpensive USB measurement mic like the UMIK sold by Mini DSP.

    • @todd8155
      @todd8155 2 года назад

      @@Josh442 - Thanks for your input on the panels, and I'll check out the Room EQ as you suggest. My next steps will be upgrade the DSP-408, and to get the panels. I know that many people state the the DSP's suck the life out of the sound quality, but dam the flexibility is nice. At some point the processing is going to be good enough such that one can't tell the difference. We may already be there.

    Interesting video, but Danny's comments about needing a woofer makes me a little curious...why didn't the customer send the panel woofer that Magnepan include in the Mini-Maggie System? They don't sell the mid-tweeter speaker panels alone. So, were these pieces purchased new, or were they sold second hand without the whole system? And if there was a mention that the Mini-Maggie System is intended for desktop (near field) use, I missed it. Oh well....

    So beaming sounds like a great way to negate room interaction. No ceiling or floor bounce and no first reflection point off the walls of any consequence. Personally i sit in a chair and dont move myself side to side when I listen so this speaker type looks like it would be teriffic. I use subs with any speaker pretty much so no surprise there and dang if we dont need to worry about box coloration with panels... waterfall shows how quick these panels are which is perfect for high level amplifiers that are also very quick. This type of design to me is absolutely teriffic. I see only positives to beaming.

    • @todd8155
      @todd8155 2 года назад

      My understanding is that with line array speakers, such as a 6 foot tall ribbon, is that that the sound basically comes off even with the top and bottom with no floor or ceiling reflections, due to the physics of a line array Therefore with in a certain distance (about 3 to 4 times the height of the array) from the speaker, there is an inverse drop off in sound instead of the typical inverse square of a point source (single cone driver). I see this as a benefit minimizing room interactions like OCK Mike says! As one moves closer or father from the speaker the sound level is more constant as well.
      It is also my understanding that a dipole speaker, such as a 6 foot ribbon open to the front and back, has a figure 8 radiation pattern due to front and rear cancellation so that this minimizes wall reflections. I understand that this is over simplified, that this changes with frequency, baffle width, baffle shape, and beaming. This is one reason I find the Linkwitz LX521 speaker intriguing. Herr Linkwitz spent lots of time optimizing the baffle shape, and he uses dual v-shaped di-pole speakers...

    this set up originally came with a woofer panel you put in between each of the mini mag panels. Not sure if the original owner has that woofer panel but from what I read about old reviews (this speaker system is a good 10 years old at this point), it did add quite a bit of bottom end to the speakers as a whole. That being said a proper traditional voice coil woofer would do far better then a planar panel "woofer" of that size ever could (even a small 10" sub would greatly out perform it).

    As we got new furniture, and it became a bit crowded in the living room. I went back to a cone system (infinity kappa 8 was the choice we liked)
    I don't regret it , I didn't realize how much I was missing again having a dynamic speaker.
    Magnepans are fantastic speakers , but have a certain set of demands. I never liked them without a subwoofer... I rebuild 3 of them.

    This discussion makes me think about the Bose 901 series 3 that I had back in the 70’s. Like any good rock and roller the first thin I did when setting them up was to point the 8 speaks toward the room and the single speaker toward the wall. Certainly I didn’t know anything about sound in those days. Also as it turned out I was always trying to get them to sound good with little result.

    Nice job on the beaming description. There are a few manufactures out there that use a single large driver or large 10"/8" pro drivers with a tweeter. Doing the math I see the beaming begins in the 1,300 to 1,700 Hz range for these sizes. My question is does the addition of a wizzer cone in the center of the large drivers affect their beaming performance, or does the tweeter in the 2 way designs need to be able to play down to the beaming frequency in order to have a change at uniform frequency dispersion? Thank you. Also please, please, please do NOT talk about the tinker toy cable risers on you tube. ;-)

    • @joshua43214
      @joshua43214 2 года назад +3

      A whizzer cone extends the high frequency response of the driver at the cost of adding a ton of color and distortion. They do not help with beaming.
      Most speaker designers address the issue (if it is an issue with their design) by using some type of wave guide. A waveguide can help off axis response at the crossover point a great deal.
      To get really good off axis response you have to move to constant-directivity horns. These tend to be really big and expensive. I don't think Klipschorns have constant-directivity, but they should be pretty close to having it if not - but that is the size of speaker you end up with.

    Maggie’s Almost impossible to drive with Vacuum Tube Amplification unless you have over 100 watts. Driving a 4Ohm load at 80dB Sensitivity is extremely difficult! This is exactly the reason why in the 1960s manufactures came up with solid State Amplification because they could go down to lower impedances like 4Ohms
    and a good quality built solid-state Amplification, that doubles its output at 4Ohms and its output into 8Ohms is half the wattage! With that said some of the DIY Loudspeaker designs that Danny Manufactures like his NX-Treme and NX -Otica, can use a 10
    Watt Vacuum tube amplification because the drivers work at 8Ohm and 16Ohm loads at 94.5Db at 1 Watt! at a combined load of 8Ohms, ideal for Vacuum Tube amplification!

How else could you sell speakers for sub-$1000 price tag. I really hate it when you degrade less expensive equipment, what did you think you were going to find, $2000 parts in a $800 speaker. Now if you find $800 parts in a $2000 speaker, by all means crush’em. Please temper your disgust a bit…BTW you sell $1400 speakers with $40 woofers in them so someone could crush you just the same. Thanks, and you do a nice job, keep it up, the information you provide is appreciated.

      In this case, the issue wasn't the amount of money spent on the design. The problem was that it was poorly designed.
      Secondly, there is a reason we can hit low price points with our drivers. Most of it involves quantity buying and no supplier or middlemen. If they were sold using dealers and in low quantities like most of the more commonly available drivers out there, then they would cost three times as much ore more. Quality levels are top notch!

      Check your ears: possible damage. (thank you for your service!)
      Check your gear: might be something like worn out leaky caps, etc. DON'T let anyone pry that amp away from you. They couldn't make it today for under $15K! Make sure to have gear checked out by someone trust-worthy.
      Check your synergy: try to swap out a component for comparison. Use friend or good dealer or maybe the repair tech.
      Check your set-up: Clean all connections, double check your speaker placement, make sure your vinyl rig is as perfect as you can get it. Also the Pearl is a MM. Double check your cart. loading is for MM. Try loading it at 100Kohm instead of 47. change stylus pressure. Try something different like a Nagaoka MP110 or Goldring E3?
      You may not have funds to do some of this but if you have patience you should be able to get that turntable dialed in, if it happened to have moved over time.

      Blame your amplifier and/or your setup. Not the Magnepans. Your experience is very abnormal. Maggies sound awful when powered by a consumer level receiver. The speaker you bought needs an amp capable of high current output. If the selling dealer did not enquire about the amp you intended to use, he/she did you no favor.
