Winona Ryder and Heather Locklear were so pretty back then. No contest. Winona Ryder & Johnny Depp were the perfect couple but too bad it didn't last long.
What I like about this film is the risk of taking dark subject materials but making it accessible to a general audience. Today's filmmakers need to learn a thing or two from this film because this film handles things with subtly in a profound way.
Honestly, I felt sympathy for JD in both the film and musical. With him, it's hard to tell where the crappy parenting starts and the psychotics begin. His whole motif is definitely a prime example of "is it nature, or nurture?" His mother kills herself in front of him, his dad is a (debatably) borderline homicidal nutcase, and he's been moved around so much, JD has literally no outside interactions as far as companionship goes outside of Veronica and his dad. I think she's the first drop of sanity, of morality he's encountered in his life that thoroughly questions him rather than just call him a lunatic or leave as is. You can sense he's just an angry boy looking for some way to get revenge on the world by hurting others. Granted it's like the shittiest coping mechanism in *history*, but I never found myself truly hating him. I think it's like when tweens gush over a romance with some serial killer type hot guy. We even see first hand with his and Veronica's romance. Even though I'm not sure if it's the intent of the film, it kind of shows what happens when the Bonnie and Clyde\Mickey and Mallory fantasy hits reality. Yeah, it can be thrills and chills, but it's a toxic relationship of chaos that eventually will bite you in the ass. You try to stop them, and suddenly it's you who's looking down the barrel of a gun. Don't stop them, and you just fall further into the rabbit hole. JD thrives off the suffering of others (very schadenfreude) due to his own denial of personal pain, and like it or not you're a part of the suffering, both the cause and the result. JD didn't seem pure evil or truly cruel, he just seemed kind of pitiful, someone who needed help but really didn't want it. He wanted to handle it himself, and if that meant blowing up a few schools to make a point, then that's what he'd do.
Oh I can muster up a lot of sympathy when JD blows himself up. I need a warning if my friends are gonna play " I am damaged " from the musical or else I'll probably cry
I agree. It captured the emotionless, cold-hearted vibe of J.D's and Veronica's relationship, and even though J.D. might've died because he loved Veronica in the musical, I think it's just as good as dying because no one loves him in the movie.
Personally I feel like the musical is much more emotional and captures the characters better. When it comes to musical JD you constantly switch between hating him and loving him. Veronica feels much more guilty about the deaths of her classmates and Heather Chandlers ghost was hilarious
Me Me Big Boy in the movie the characters seemed almost boring. JD was just crazy and Veronica seemed unfazed by killing chandler and only a little guilt when it came to Kurt and Ram in the movie. In the musical you learn just how much his mothers death affected him and with Chandler following Veronica around causes her to never forget what happened

Honestly, I felt sympathy for JD in both the film and musical. With him, it's hard to tell where the crappy parenting starts and the psychotics begin. His whole motif is definitely a prime example of "is it nature, or nurture?"
His mother kills herself in front of him, his dad is a (debatably) borderline homicidal nutcase, and he's been moved around so much, JD has literally no outside interactions as far as companionship goes outside of Veronica and his dad. I think she's the first drop of sanity, of morality he's encountered in his life that thoroughly questions him rather than just call him a lunatic or leave as is. You can sense he's just an angry boy looking for some way to get revenge on the world by hurting others. Granted it's like the shittiest coping mechanism in *history*, but I never found myself truly hating him. I think it's like when tweens gush over a romance with some serial killer type hot guy.
We even see first hand with his and Veronica's romance. Even though I'm not sure if it's the intent of the film, it kind of shows what happens when the Bonnie and Clyde\Mickey and Mallory fantasy hits reality. Yeah, it can be thrills and chills, but it's a toxic relationship of chaos that eventually will bite you in the ass. You try to stop them, and suddenly it's you who's looking down the barrel of a gun. Don't stop them, and you just fall further into the rabbit hole. JD thrives off the suffering of others (very schadenfreude) due to his own denial of personal pain, and like it or not you're a part of the suffering, both the cause and the result. JD didn't seem pure evil or truly cruel, he just seemed kind of pitiful, someone who needed help but really didn't want it. He wanted to handle it himself, and if that meant blowing up a few schools to make a point, then that's what he'd do.
Oh I can muster up a lot of sympathy when JD blows himself up. I need a warning if my friends are gonna play " I am damaged " from the musical or else I'll probably cry

I agree. It captured the emotionless, cold-hearted vibe of J.D's and Veronica's relationship, and even though J.D. might've died because he loved Veronica in the musical, I think it's just as good as dying because no one loves him in the movie.
I think the movie is better, though I like the musical more, but that's probably out of bias because I discovered the musical first.
While I disagree (I have a soft spot for musicals), I understand why you think this and respect it
Personally I feel like the musical is much more emotional and captures the characters better. When it comes to musical JD you constantly switch between hating him and loving him. Veronica feels much more guilty about the deaths of her classmates and Heather Chandlers ghost was hilarious
Me Me Big Boy in the movie the characters seemed almost boring. JD was just crazy and Veronica seemed unfazed by killing chandler and only a little guilt when it came to Kurt and Ram in the movie. In the musical you learn just how much his mothers death affected him and with Chandler following Veronica around causes her to never forget what happened
What about the Veronica “Suicide” scene? The “hey mom, what’s for diner?” line kills me every time.
