    Love the Belgariad and I believe it holds up fine today, I don’t really understand when people say it doesn’t.

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  6 месяцев назад +6

      Agreed! Its very trope-y, but if you don't mind the tropes, it still tells a great story with memorable characters.

    • @Wally_stad
      @Wally_stad 6 месяцев назад

      Because the author and his wife kept foster kids chained in cages in their basement. Kind of makes it hard to hold up the Belgariad. The books are just generic derivative fantasy.

    Steven Brust Vlad Taltos is severely underrated. If you want a fun popcorn read but well written I recommend it! Robin Hobb and Jim Butcher is a huge fan. Probably why Hobb collaborated with Brust

    I have to agree with you, the MassMax Paperbacks are too odd! The narrow "tallness" makes looking at it akin to looking at a caricature of a book. I get the idea behind them (slightly bigger font, bigger spacing, more comfortable read)... but they more often than not just trigger my inner caveman, and make me want to rage and throw rock and sticks!

    Finally, a fantasy book-tuber mentions Guy Gavriel Kay! He is my favorite living author but he is mentioned VERY rarely in these circles, at least as far as I've seen thus far. Enjoy!

      GGK is amazing! I'll be reading Tigana in April. I learned about Kay's work through the book tube channels of Jake Bishop and The Library Ladder, if you're looking for more Kay content!

    Can you do a video showing us all the artwork in your Belgariad Special Editions, when ever you get the chance. I just finished the series for the first time!
    Whenever you get to Joe Jackson’s memoir, besides his early albums, listen to a more recent one lately called “ Rain”!! So good! I have fallen in love with his music all over again.🎹🎶

      I may have to do that with the Belgariad! I literally ordered the first book in 2019 and it's taken that long for them to arrive.

    Those last special edition hardcovers you showed are gorgeous. The Empire of Thornes is especially nice but that David Eddings set takes the cake. I do have Prince of Thorns and it's on my list to read this year.

    Great book haul Josh! I’ve never read the Belgariad. I got King Killing Queen as well, and it is kind of a prequel to one of his ongoing series the Anwwn Cycle. I’ve read almost all of his books, and he’s fantastic. I’m curious to know what you think of the Lindholm books. I recently read Wizard of the Pigeons and enjoyed it.

    nice haul! For real, The Blood Stones is excellent. I hope you get a chance to read it and discuss it. Guards! Guards! is the way to go but my god, those tall skinny editions suck. I'm doing Discworld on kindle purely because of it.

    One of the things I likes about Noble House is how it references characters from his previous books. Mostly Taipan but some others as well.

    Really excited to see Noble House on your book haul and I can’t wait till you read it to get your thoughts. It’s my favorite book that I have read by James Clavell. Love the sprayed edges on those broken binding editions. Thanks for another wonderful video. So exciting to see all the books you have received and acquired. C

      Good to know about Noble House! Gai-Jin has been a bit of a slog - a great story but Clavell really needed a better editor in that one.

    I have the Grim Oak Belgariad set as well! My only complaint(lol) is about the art for books 4 and 5. Polgara would never let Garion out in public with hair like that.

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  6 месяцев назад +1

      I agree! The artwork isn't the best to be honest, but it's nice to have those in hardcover!

  • @ulysses17_
    @ulysses17_ 6 месяцев назад

    The Belgariad set looks beautiful. The Grim Oak experience is usually fantastic so I wouldn't let the extremely long delay deter you from future purchases. They learned their lesson after the issues with Belgariad and only sell books one at a time now so they arrive much more quickly.

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  6 месяцев назад

      That's really good to know as I've been hesitant to order them again. I ordered the Belgariad in 2019 and it took 4 1/2 years to get all five books.

    • @ulysses17_
      @ulysses17_ 6 месяцев назад

      @@RedFuryBooksYes it's a crazy long time. The mistake they made was selling them as a set and the pandemic also didn't help. In fact, they actually lost money on the series because costs went up significantly after they had already charged everyone so far in advance. It was a costly lesson. Currently, for most books, they're aiming to ship ~5 months after pre-order begins. They're doing their first GGK book this week which I'm hoping to get!

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  6 месяцев назад

      @@ulysses17_ I'm kind of torn with ordering The Summer Tree. The prices have gone up significantly, and it'll likely take a decade if they go through all of GGK's works.

    I too am reading Gai-Jin and enjoying it as much as Shogun. It’s such a beast though that I’m reading it in blocks, alternating between its “books” and then other reads. You do need to read Tai-Pan before this one, though.

    Nice, I think you'd enjoy Sun Eater. I've not read Dune for the comparison, but I'm a huge Simmons fan and Sun Eater gives me Hyperion/Endymion vibes. Just finished Demon in White a week ago, in fact.
    Currently reading Shogun now, probably will take me most of March. I have Noble House, but my copy is 1300 pages 🙄 It may be a while before I get to more Clavell

    I recently purchased and read Jeffrey Archer's Only Time Will Tell, I made it to part of the second book in the series and gave it up, it wasn't my cup of tea. But lol, the book was that long mass market paperback that is skinnier in width and it's an annoying size. Plus, makes it difficult to read with one hand while you eat or drink a cup of coffee or something. Not sure who came up with that format or what purpose it serves. 🤔
