    Ha yes, Noita,
    Some runs, you eat the moon, kill the concept of water, and die to the sun you created
    Others you trip balls, turn the floor to acid and die
    One of the thing I find way to funny is that it tracks how often each enemy has killed you. Turns out that the most dangerous enemy that I should avoid at all cost is myself.

    Shame you missed bring up the fact Noita _still_ hasn’t been solved. The eye glyphs and cauldron still remain a fascinating mystery and through intense work of community- primarily on the Noitacord, new mechanics and tech are still being discovered from time to time
    An example of this is the fact it was recently brought to light that when you die, a new star is added to the night sky, much of the game’s secrets are hidden in the Falling Everything Engine itself afaik, and this makes it extremely hard to breach the secrets and just datamine the entire game- sorta like a truly uncrackable lock if you don’t have the key
    Edit: it seems the cauldron _might_ be solved as it was used in the recent Cessation Cipher, but that stuff was added years after the cauldron originally debuted, and the devs haven’t said much regarding the cauldron before or since

    I've heard a number of people try to refer to Slay the Spire and even FTL as rogue-lites due to having meta progression through unlocks but that doesn't sit well with me. It's the same deal as Noita where you have options added to the pool rather than a direct increase in power. The games have a LOT more legs left after you've maxed those out. They're not Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup level of Rogue purity, but I struggle to call those games rogue-lites. The risk of rain games, same thing. I don't mind content unlocks, especially when locked behind something interesting like Noita's 'quests'. I do have a strong distaste for meta-progression though. I want to know that I am getting better at a game.

    • @Anathyma-e6l
      @Anathyma-e6l  3 месяца назад +17

      Hard agree on STS and FTL, definitely roguelikes rather than lites. However, STS is definitely its own unique beast as it essentially created its own genre through sheer excellence. I'd call deckbuilder roguelikes their own solidly unique type of game; referring to them as just "roguelikes" without the qualifier of "deckbuilder" kind of misses some of the nuance in my opinion. Kind of a squares are rectangles/rectangles aren't squares situation.

    • @profwoland8942
      @profwoland8942 2 месяца назад +4

      But the meta progression in STS, FTL, and Enter the Gungeon for that matter, unlocks things that either directly enable you to start off a run with a greater advantage by being objectively more powerful, or potentially let you start a run that way. I don’t think anything you unlock in Noita has the potential to let you start off a run with more powerful items or abilities, it just gives you the possibility to encounter more powerful gear at some point in your run. To me, that’s the difference between those games, and it’s also why I consider Noita to be a Roguelike and the other games mentioned to be Rogue-lites. They’re as close as you can be to a Roguelike as you can get without technically being one though (in my opinion) because they don’t have overt meta progression like, for example, Vampire Survivors.

    • @opatzo9165

      @@profwoland8942STS only have Neow’s blessing that fits that description and even then it’s debatable since you always have Neow’s blessing even while starting out. And the new blessing you get isn’t more powerful, they’re just alternative. I would argue Neow’s lament(one of the two blessing you first get to choose in the game) is one of the best blessing.

    In a way, Noita embodies my personal relationship with all roguelikes. It even allows others to experience that relationship.
    I *love* the possibility space of the genre, but I suck at the gameplay. Partly because of adhd and partly because the gameplay isn't what I'm focusing on, what I'm deriving my enjoyment from.
    So the next time you spend 15 minutes tinkering with wands only to be killed by some interaction you couldn't test for in a Holy Mountain, I'm with you. That's me. In every roguelike, it's my love for weird esoteric poop that directly (Sawblades) or indirectly (I just need to carry these useless wands to the next Holy Mountain, then it'll be great!) leads to my death.

    You say unfair, but the game is the very definition of fairness. In fact, you don't take physics damage from most things enemies do - in that sense, it's unfair IN YOUR FAVOR.
    It's a hard, patience-requiring, demanding and deep game. But it really isn't unfair.
    If you went into your first run with the same caution and patience that you have on your first 33 orb run, you could make your first run into that - because frankly, you'd be firing no spells you hadn't thoroughly tested. Enemies wouldn't catch you off-guard, because you'd remain in cover 99% of the time until you don't need it anymore, hell, you may even see an enemy and think "I will intentionall let it live so I can test its effects out".
    The game is fair.

    • @B1esky
      @B1esky 2 месяца назад +1

      the only real unfair things noita could hand you is literally no good wands/spells (basically impossible) or monster juice spilling all over the place from a great treasure chest and causing like 10 bosses to spontaneously spawn (also basically impossible). it's so refreshing playing it with knowledge because every run can be a good one

    • @NukeCloudstalker
      @NukeCloudstalker 2 месяца назад

      @@B1esky Someone ran into a seed like that, where it happens on the first floor. Pretty fun. Ridiculous, but fun. Most runs are more sensible, but the insensible ones are honestly the best. Insane fungal shifts, ridiculously wacky RNG (healium on the entrance of the mines? I had that!), your own ghost wandering about with a nuke wand? Sometimes you just get an extraordinarily hard or easy time, and both can be either your downfall or your rise to power. Harder runs tend to keep me on my toes - it's when I get a bit too easy of a time that I get careless and get myself killed.
      And agreed! The moment you realize it's really just your way of utilizing the situation you've been given properly, or living with the risk of not doing so (for the gain of speed, potential reward etc.), then the game becomes very fun.
      Died in a potential god-run yesterday, and I think that what separates those that enjoy how ruthlessly consistent noita is, are those who realize that the outcome of the game becomes a reflection of their own attitude.
      When you realize that your death is just "my hubris got me", there's nothing to do at that point but laugh at the fact that you spent hours on something, only to either ruin it because of impatience or carelessness.

    I thought entropy is more about how things degenerate over time than the general concept of randomness? For example, in physics, entropy is a concept of energy lost from a system. If you've ever heard of the heat death of the universe, that's physics entropy at play. Am I just misunderstanding how you're using that word?

    • @Gamepwner1234
      @Gamepwner1234 2 месяца назад +2

      Entropy is a very broad idea used in many different fields and while randomness and probability in general is an important part of the study of entropy, it's only one piece. Same with your idea of "energy loss" in a system, energy can't be "lost" in a true sense as far as we know, at least in regards to real world systems. The heat death of the universe isn't a loss of energy itself, it's a loss of the means for energy exchange/transfer because of the irreversible nature of chemical reactions, as a super simplified explanation. The concept of irreversibility and a trend towards system wide equilibrium are arguably the most important pieces to the concept of entropy, which I think is very relevant to the ideas presented in Noita, but this video honestly completely misses the mark by not actually engaging with any of that.

    So painful watching you having no water. After killing comi ('final' boss) several times, i decided myself, that start with any other liquids rather then water (or its variables) or pheromone is pointless. Pheromone is the only one liquid (that not rare as hell) which almost guarantees you some great income. Just throw some empty wands in it, and you might be able to buy whole shop, at least first few floors. Adding that hiisi medics would heal you with that, makes it really universal instrument

    So, the way you discussed entropy triggered my ADHD zoomies and, as a trained (in training? A not-PhD, but still degree holding) physicist, only shenanigans may ensue.
    The game is fascinating because while you are fighting entropy, you are only fighting the first phase. And, just like any video game boss, the first phase is the least terrifying. See, people make entropy to be much more complex than it is... including me because I had to delete the first attempt at writing this because I got stuck on state functions and potential steps. Anyway! Entropy is just any energy (mass is energy per e = mc^2 * lambda, so just lump in matter too) based system's tendency toward equalibrium. Its the proverbial ball between two slopes, it wants to stop moving and to be between the two slopes. The first phase is what you are fighting here. Its the largest swings of energy as the ball speeds down one slope and most of the way up the other, but stopping just short of the peak. Energy was lost in the exchange, which is what was used to paint the walls with your internals. As everything interacts, the system goes toward equalibrium, but with violent intensity. You then step in and mess with the equalibrium, causing the balance point to shift, making the attempts to reach equalibrium even more violent. But the violence slowly subsides until equalibrium is reached.
    However, this isn't the scary phase. The scary phase is the equalibrium. See, when we talk about fighting entropy, the equilibrium is the phase we usually think about because, at equalibrium, nothing is changing. We rely upon that change for our continued existence. Our bodies need to breathe and transform O2 into CO2. We need to eat. We need energy and entropy to be moving. But when it all stands still, there is nothing for us to survive with. To me, thats infintiely more terrifying than being caught in the violence of the first stage. The first stage gives you something to fight. The second just watches as you realize your fate is inevitable.
    This all said! I do think your explaination of entropy was a bit... weird. Like, it was conceptually on theme, but it seemed like either something was cut or you didn't quite understand entropy. I know I am just an idiot on the internet, but if you don't understand something about entropy that you want to understand, I will absolutely excitedly share everything I know. I've been studying physics at university for over 5 years at this point. I love this field and will _absolutely_ share anything I can with anyone I can. Except if you ask in depth questions about quantum mechanics because that is just magic from a plane of existence beyond my comprehension. But also, if I am just being silly in my ADHD zoomie frenzy, don't feel obligated to take me up on this. You may understand entropy better than me and my tiny brainlet just thought it was wrong or incomplete out of my own lack of kmowledge!

    hey if you ever run another video essay thing like this again, you may be interested in running a bit of music in the background, just to give the video some meat, typically 10-15-20 ish percent of your normal voice volume, so that it's in the background and isn't interfering with your voice, and is just a bit of audio noise so that everything you say doesn't feel as. . . barebones? I don't know the best way to describe it, but I would recommend some additional audio noise that isn't bad to listen to and that's quiet in regards to your normal voice. Other than that, a little bit of cut out speedup between SOME of your pauses, just to help the flow of the video. Keep going, this is a good start!
