It’s cheap, easy to use and allows users illegal access to thousands of hours of premium television content at a fraction of the price. But consumer beware: connecting these dodgy devices to your home Wi-Fi network could leave you vulnerable to cybercriminals. International criminal networks are infiltrating South African homes via unsecured devices. From resellers to super-dealers and server owners, Carte Blanche traces the overseas piracy networks that are allowing cybercriminals entry into South African homes.

here is where i speak up, i dont condone piracy.
but what do you do when the content you want, movies, games ect..
only serves to make the rich richer?
do you have any idea of the level of abuse from developers that own their own social media platform alone.
they steal your personal data everyday.. some time highly intrusively using viruses and malware scripts to extract your data and the thing is that some of this data can leak.
huge companies have leaked your data and you needed to agree to their TOS or EULA that absolves them of doing great crime.
so just as the pirates are playing.. so are the developers..
again i dont justify piracy... but i think it's better competition for developers.
i have had less issues with pirated content than content from platform where everyone can identify and abuse you.
developers say they only collect what they need.. but the truth is they are just as guilty of making ypour purchase are nightmare.
when i was a kid.. i bought a video game.
it came on a disc.
that disc works till this day.
but, i bought a game thru a online distributor.
and even tho i have a bank charge.. and it is listed on my account it cannot be accessed because the developer no longer supports it.
so i have no product.. after paying for one...
piracy got me my product i paid for back in my hands.. that i after paying had to beg the developer to bring back the game and got told i got my moneys worth...
so they basically destroyed ownership...
i hope someone reads this.
The real crime is the price Multichoice charges, and the fact that they've held a monopoly in the space in South Africa over the last 30 years. They deserve to go under.
We stream because Multichoice are not prepared to supply decently priced packages for sport especially Rugby. They are on their way out
It's expensive to produce movies and to broadcast.
Multichoice repeat one thing over and over again
Totally Agree 🎯
@@MKL_Dthey don't have to bundle all while repeating movies. They could learn from NBC for example with Peacock
Yes these tv boxes are illegal. But multichoice may be legal but it is unethical to charge that much. The CEOs and owners only care about the bottom line and not how expensive it is for South African families.
Well yeah, Multichoice is a JSE listed company - their board including the CEOs literal job is only to cate about the bottom line..? If you own Multichoice stock you definitely want them to keep gouging customers as much as possible so stock price can go up.
@@pieterrossouw8596 jse will be a thing of a past.
TV boxes are not illegal. It's the software loaded on these boxes that are illegal.
@@pieterrossouw8596 Well, let those who knows that it is unethical and don't own stocks and are not heartless do as they please.
The subscription fees for DSTV is a rip off. It was nice once upon a time but now i dont think so
Love it Dudes...don't stop your backdoor streaming....us poor South Africans NEED this.👍
exactly
Oscar worthy performance by drama queen Frikkie there. 🥳
😂
... Was about to say the same...
He went in...we hurting his pocket
🤣🤣😂🤞🏾
Can we also have an episode on how the "Legal" version of the Entertaiment industry also exploits musicians and actors.
Basically as they do not effectively pay South African creatives' royalties either...Years gone by and copyright works available even on streaming sites of some of South Africa's finest artists who don't see a cent for years. Case in point the Brenda Fassie/ Zahara dynamic; 2 generational artists faced with the same plight decades apart. Time to look at all perspectives
also remember kids, use a VPN and put it on your router so it can't be traced back to you
How does one use VPN and put it on the router. Please share.
I have been sailing the seas for almost 20 years now and I will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I urge all South Africans to stop paying to watch TV. It is foolish to give your money away to big companies who do nothing for you. It is easy to become a pirate, do it and save thousands
Leave Tawanda alone
What a joke, as a paying DSTV premium customer I still had their streams crash on me during the world cup. Before combating pirates they should rather improve their services
Indeed, even on 200mbps fiber line it'd buffer constantly with e.g. RWC. Bet the illegal stream was smooth.
New business models are needed if Monochoice (as someone called them) is to survive the current, and coming industrial revolution.
Everything is changing, and they don't seem to be interested in adapting to the new ways of doing things, and that creates a gap for the such syndicates to cater to the customers
Please share tawandas details.
Lol
Lol please
Tawanda is the friend we've all been waiting for 😂
Please I need it.
ill wait here with you.. tawanda is needed.
Multichoice is unnecessarily expensive and not there to help the people of South Africa to a basic life.
And multichoice does not provide the shows which showmax and Netflix provide. That’s why people resort to piracy
I would rather pay for Netflix than DStv with repeating movies🤦🏾♂️
at 5:35 I love how he make this comparison. And Fun fact. When I buy my dream car and payed the full price for it with my own money. It my car. I don't have to share my time in it with advertisement, that force me on a detour to stop at every KFC, SPAR, Pool shop, Cell Phone shop and |Pet store on my way...???!?!?!?? You see if the car was free, and I was forced every 10 minutes to stop and shop for 3 to 5 minutes. Then that was the price I had to pay. But as it stands in the television industries right now, We have to buy and pay for our own cars, plus stop and shop at every store along the roadside leading too our destination.
I love Carte Blanche
But I found some parts of the episode misleading and might have an intention to instill fear of the consumers of these ( illegal ) devices.
1. The alleged backdoor that exists on these devices is a symptom of how the WiFi standard works, generally any device which uses the WiFi protocols can be exploited, that's why we are warned against using public WiFi.
2. The episode failed to address the cause of these illegal, multiple expensive subscription services, see the comments section people are complaining.
Simply put this episode is simply trying to cause fear with miss information and unfortunately people will continue to use these devices
I am available to challenge any of the so called experts to test all the said vulnerabilities that exists on these devices.
Wait you expect Monochoice not to scare their viewers into paying their extortion monies?
@@betelanus
Monochoice 😂😭
You should do your research before correcting someone.... backdoors have nothing to with WiFi, for example you can still have a backdoor on your device even if you are connected to a LAN network!
@@macctosh he's not denying that, he is using Wi-Fi as one of the examples of data access. You should do your reading before correcting someone
@@kultureking9177 "The alleged backdoor that exists on these devices is a symptom of how the WiFi standard works" what does that statement mean to you? what am I missing?
The problem is Multichoice has more say in this country than the SABC.
This should stop! ✋🙄
They should have never reported this. For this is making people see this as an opportunity to purchase these.
l was about to ask what is the name of the device
My heart is so sore for twande. He didnt deserve to be exposed like this.😢 there is soo much crime in sa. This is the least of our worries as south africans. The fact that we seek cheaper forms of entertainment shows how we are suffering financially. Dstv is not considerate of this and instead is robbing consumers. Why arent we as consumers ever thought of or considered.
I disagree…it is what it is. He was on the wrong side of the law. Yes DSTV can be expensive…but it is safe.
I have a saying…”cheap is expensive”. Paying for these hacked systems is how we end up funding organizations like ISIS etc.
If DSTV is too costly… migrate to Netflix/AppleTV and RUclips. You won’t die. Sports you can go to the pub😅
I'm agree with you, this woman must leave Tawanda alone, why they never talked about this stupidity pricess of DStv,
Tawanda for Minister of Communications!
The cybersecurity visuals had me chuckling. In a country with real problems this is just silly. I mean, Carte Blanche airs on MNET, which is owned by Multichoice - not hard to see where the push for this content came from. They're just trying to scare people but honestly this video shows many people who never considered piracy just how easy it is. It's also pretty easy to isolate these (or any) devices from your home network - many routers can create a guest network. Just put these boxes on that network instead of your main one.
I guess carte blanche also knows where their bread is thickly buttered. Oscar performance by Frikkie
Tawanda is about make all that money multichoice is missing 😂 excellent promo
Wait till they discover movies are now being uploaded to Twitter 🤣
😂😂😂
😂😂😂why are you loud
😂
Multichoice is the criminal here. We will continue to stream and hopefully shut down the money pirates multichoice
Multichoice taking the high road. Now I've really seen it all.
Theft and piracy arent the same
No one asking the question on how Multichoice is legally shutting these down because it looks like they are performing a ddos attack on legitimate servers which is highly illegal
What about the people living abroad who legally paid for Showmax which Multichoice has now suspended the service. This just encourages illegal streaming
DSTV not as innocent as you'd like to think. During the RWC they deceptively offered a R20 deal not explicitly informing the people who signed up that the next month they will be charged R170. Why are you surprised?
haha this guy used the, "would you steal a car" tagline.
If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing.
Frikkie is such an alarmist! 😂
😂😂. Foreal. Old mans gotta chill
This wouldn't be the case if multichoice didn't have a monopoly on the market in SA..charging ridiculous prices so the average income earner cannot afford it.
I really enjoy Masa's presenting and she is always keeping us intrigued
Where can I get that box?
Piracy will never stop, there is a world wide community of people and servers keeping it alive.
My heart is so sore for twande. He didnt deserve to be exposed like this.😢
I dont see users going to jail in SA, the law here is not blind and with the economy it wont stop, instead you have given us a way out to get this kind of servises
Tawanda needs to be protected
More like deported
*Greetings SA, I follow and enjoy to watch all your episodes it's an eye opening content!! I was so down when I heard that Derek has passed away... ME being away from home 🇧🇼🇧🇼 CB brings SA in to my living room and keeps me grounded with my African roots. /Kind regards from Sweden*
If M-Net block the feed to the ciber viewers and they get a blank screen.
WHY THE FUSS??
Or am I missing to see M-Net 😂
Guess that they can't stand all the cancelations and admit people enjoy watching rugby at their local pub. Supporting the pub, instead of paying the Ridiculous amount of money to them!
The fact that we can live without it and still support our teams‼️
Let me refresh your memory a bit.
The CDs piracy is almost negligible now because of the existence of RUclips Music, Netflix and so on.
Piracy is a result of high prices to content. If the content creators consistently increase their prices people will find a way to view that content.
DSTV sells DSTV to people who are watching DSTV and payed for DSTV already using adverts on DSTV about DSTV.
if you guys have an issue with piracy, try giving us what we pay for. I would be so proud to have DSTV in my house again.
How much did multichoice pay for this episode to be made.
The biggest crime/scam here is what DSTV charges consumers for it's mediocre product offerings
One of the many foreigners doing illegal activities in South Africa.
M-net deserves this problem with their crazy subscription.
I paid USD $6/month to watch the entire RWC.
The content producers should think of it differently and change there business model. As mention in the article that's billions of people watching, gets sponsors to display product in the series and movies. If youtube and content creators can make money by offering a "free service" I'm sure a you guys can come up with a nee service model. The world is changing and you can't do the same thing and expect a better result.
THe one thing that would bring people back to Multichoice would to bring make sport available to all their products, and not keep the sports that the nation want to watch, locked to their premium package. But they know once they do it 99.9999999% of their Premium users would downgrade.
I been using torrents and iptv for last 6 years. So much cheaper. Use vpn
It’s fine. My Disney/ Amazon prime and next years F1 and MotoGP subs are less than 4 months DSTV.. I’m happy.
Same here, I'm using Disney+ and Prime's Mobile plan, And the only one I pay full price is Netflix, as the family watches only netflix.
where can i contact this Tawanda bloke❓
I need his services😂😂😂😂
We need these streams. It's unaffordable to pay these big corps😂
Just for research purposes, when can one get this device to study it?
Consumers at this stage don’t actually care. 😎
This episode is the same as Metro FM's interview with the fake doctor.
Carte Blanche has a far more credible name for such. Ever since most of us were introduced to computers we have been downloading from pirate sites. From the days of dial-up internet to get video games, from recording music from the radio onto a cassette tape, to when DSTV would give us a free month and we would download the movies on VHS. The TV games we played and bought from Game and Makro when we were young (and some consoles they sell even today) were not from Nintendo, SAGA or Namco but had classic games like Tetris, Contra and Mario.
For a premium investigative show, this is actually disappointing. Or is it one of those that DSTV asked for such an episode for the tough times they experiencing as a company? That old-school propaganda that unfortunately doesn't work anymore in this information-age world?
you wouldnt download a car!
Multichoice has to innovate. In the US you get Peacock for as low as 6 USD. MBC in Middle East is superior in content to DSTV
Tawanda my Zimbabwean fellow 😂 doing the most. Darrell Nyawasha another Zimbabwean cracking the puzzle
Does anybody have Tawanda's number...🤔
Lol as I watch this on a hacked RUclips premium
“Don’t worry, no one will catch you.” Tawanda 2023 😂😂😂😂🐐
How ethical are the practices of those legally selling TV services in South Africa like the parent company of CB?
Care to comment on that?
Multichoice is worried cause they are losing customer they prices are just ridiculous what about the BBCSA an people who are not paying tv licenses
Education should be free. Entertainment should be even free-er. Big companies and what what should keep records and be given tax incentives for the amount of piracy they allow after they have made their profits. Proper partnerships should be made with the people who host these movies on these servers so that more people can voice their opinions and review games, movies or products. This will allow companies to collect more data and improve their products and services and cater for a wider audience. Because really a lot of people are genuinely struggling and cannot afford these crazy subscription fees.
I watch pirated from SA, straight through USA to Japan, if it's there I don't pay. The world is unfair, it's not my duty to make it fair, they don't share their profits anyway,
Sponsored by Multichoice right? Right?
Multi choice must take responsibility here. So they rather give profit to cyber attacks than reducing their pathetic price increase...
Can you share tawandas details please
Homeboi 🇿🇼 said l don’t need this kind of stress 😂😂😂…..
Plus he said that they are pushing an agenda on him 😂😅😢
@@thamithwala3011 for real tho how many SA people sell these boxes but they could only find a foreigner 😂😂
Thanks for this episode on highlighting this glad I came across it
I want to avoid this device, what is its name so that l can make sure to avoid it or report when l see it 😑
Lol Frikkie is such a Muppet
This just screams "YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A CAR!!" lol
boy I would if I could. A different one for every day of the week!
DStv has to pay the artist their residuals first
So we must pay R990 pm to watch shows and movies from 2007?
Multichoice is the real criminal here
Simple, Virtual Private Network (VPN).
if you pay with your bank card, doesn't help at all... VPN providers, particularly the cheapest/popular ones are badically honeypots for law enforcement. They'll give your details up in a heartbeat.
Proudly paid for by Multichoice
I kinda want the TV box😅😅😅
Since you KINDA WANNA have a box talk to TAWANDA u never know he may hook u up 😂😂 Hmmmm I WONDER who has WANDAs number. Imagines this phrase on his TV ad
I love watching this, multi choice prizes are too much yet they don't have the content on top of it they created showmax while they can't keep up with the content. I pay dstv for less than 6 channels yet the price is too high. Hands off that TV box guy
I need Tawanda to see me that box , I can’t keep up with DSTV costs
What about movies and series that are not available on legal streaming services based on your geo location. How are you supposed to consume that content?
Piracy is a norm now. It's necessary. It's right. It's ok
Multichoice Profit 25Billion Plus a year,A Top US actor earns $65Million and donations from Both R1,000,000- So Pirates will always change the scales
Does anybody know where I can get Tawanda. Please. It's important.
The Multichoice Piracy nton nton guy is so passionate that I think we hurting his pocket...
The hypocrisy here is appalling. So you're telling me if I go through your entire staff's phones/Laptops on their local music players, they paid for each and every track you'll find on there? 🤔Right now you may find that there are songs and movies you have stored somewhere, that were sent to you long ago through Bluetooth or ShareIt, that you know very well you did not pay for. Don't even get me started on the software that you'll find on said PC's.
I'm sorry, but this here is not a story, y'all are reaching.
We pay dstv to watch proper movies they show us Karati kid in 2023 how is that not a crime
Keep your shiddy multichoice that shows replays the whole year. Ill keep my streams thanks. Much cheaper and we can choose what to watch.
The wifi network providers have all the digital footprints of these culprits but since they arent losing money they wont sell the pirates out😂😂😂😂😂😂
Masa, ask Daryl his Rig's Specs it looks like a sweet machine, I see it has a DeepCool cooler.
Siyanai naye Tawanda🇿🇼
only big corporations are allowed to be greedy not the average person ...
The SABC also doesn't pay copyright holders.
How come online services are selling those boxes don't there know they are big company's
Where can one contact tjis dude selling cheap subscription, i want to tell him to stop
I'm getting one soon dstv is expensive
Nespers monopolizes the industry then nakes a short film about piracy😭😭😭..... of course we going to download cause their prices are wild
These boxes get used as part of a botnet. Mostly for DDoS attacks.
Im going to join this piracy and buy myself a tv box and subscribe
Help whats the name of the app l need it too
so that's why my Pthumanathi shares are doing so bad, or could it actually be your product offerings and Pricing structures ???
