I really liked this review and your critiques, it was different than a lot of other reviews I’ve seen of the show and that was refreshing. I also thought it was weird that Ginny did all those things with Marcus so fast within the first two days of moving to a new town, but I read an interesting post online that attributed that impulsive behavior to a coping mechanism borne out of trauma. It was a way for Ginny to regain control over her sexuality and bodily autonomy after her creepy stepdad touched her. Idk if that’s what the writers were intending, but I think Ginny’s romantic relationships make more sense when viewing them from that perspective. Otherwise the only explanation is that she’s a teenager ruled by hormones and they’re trying to show how she’s similar to her mom. But I think all of those explanations can exist at once.
You know what, now that you say it, I definitely can see how her experience with the stepfather could play a part in her behavior. Hadn’t thought of it that way. I think the reasons coexist like you stated.... thank you for watching love. I appreciate it. 💗

That’s immediately what I took it as. When I was younger I had a ton of grooming experiences with men and my way of getting that out was to full fledge embrace my sexuality in some questionable ways that I thought made sense at the time. She’s trying to reclaim her body and grasp onto anything that can make her feel like she has control again, even if it comes with unintentionally hurting some people in the process, as it’s the only way she knows to feel complete or empowered. She’s a kid acting from trauma and bad coping mechanisms, the logical “what if I get pregnant and turn into my mom” thought isn’t in her head at all.
What trauma? We haven't seen it yet. Moving around is not traumatic unless you are living in a hostel, in a car, or on the street. I am not sure we should give them a season to make up something because I doubt she will ever be someone we like.
I’ve been called they before by some cashier at a grocery store me and my mom go to and I was like 💀 I didn’t say anything bc my mom was friends with that lady for yearss and I know she probably meant well but it still felt so weird
I thought it was annoying how Ginny stated that she felt too black for the white kids and too white for the black kids but she maneuvered the white crowd pretty easily but avoided the other black girl the entire season. They only bond when Ginny faces racism with the teacher in that one episode and runs to the bathroom.
@@faithd2834 I have to disagree because in the black community with black women biracial women are more desired and seen as beautiful than dark skin full black women and young black girls catch on to this at a young age and try to befriend the biracial girls so I call bs
@Char Bear yeah you’re probably right but let’s be honest if you’re complaining that you’re too white for the black crowd but openly turning down the only black girls that’s making an effort to be your friend and putting up with white kids who make racist jokes about you, mock your natural hair and are ignorant to your experience then can you really complain about not being accepted? Mixed people and “nonconventional” black people operate like this in real life lol. “I’m too white for the black people, but too black for the white people.” YET they conveniently enough always find a way to put up with the white folks and shun the black folks when allegedly both sides are impossible for them to navigate. Personally, I consider it anti-blackness.
It really annoyed me when Ginny and Hunter were having an argument about the english essay, Ginny put it in the wrong format, and she assumed her teacher was being racist.
Well ,it was passive racism. As a teacher you’re supposed to encourage your students to think outside of the box and the fact that she found a creative way to tell her story shouldn’t have disqualified her from the competition. If anything, it gave her a leg up.
@xDaisy that's the thing essay format can still be poetry. Idk about the world of Ginny and Georgia but IRL they want you to make your essays memorable and playing with the format is encouraged. Hunter's essay sounded boring and dumb like a 4th grader wrote it. It was too generic to believably win.
Edit: Nvm I rewatched the show, they said some messed up bs but hunter gave Ginny a taste of her own medicine. . It was quite racist now that I watched again. Hunter never said anything racist, what’s your point? And what Ginny said wasn’t racist, it was just ignorant and rude.
@@iLikeCok I think that she means that Hunter called her out with her bullsh*t lol she was acting as if she didn't win the prize because she's a minority when Hunter is too, she's incapable to accept that she did something wrong and it HAS to be because she's black when it's really not about that, even though the teacher ended up being racist, she didn't win because she simply didn't follow the assignment. Also, she did call him not asian enough (I don't know if that would be considered racist but either way it was so clearly wrong) when she complais all the time about struggling with that exact same problem.
Another issue is Ginny saying she isn't black enough for the black people but, when she is invited to hang out she is always finding a reason not to go. She purposefully separated herself from them and only talks to the black people when all her white friends dumped her.
@@danny_chestnut253 there’s another biracial girl at my school who does this and I always found it so weird. I tend to hang out with more black people and she’s always hanging out with the preppy white ones while looking at others like they’re less than.
My biggest problem is that Ginny has such a main character complex. Abby literally came out saying that she struggles with body dysmorphia and family issues, and Ginny has the audacity to be like “well I have problems too 🥺🥺” and everyone laughed it off. Justice for Abby.

As someone who is 15 years old, Ginny is NOTHING like a regular 15 year old at all. Like a lot of what she does doesn’t make any sense and isn’t at all anything like any person who is in either 9th or 10th grade. She is like what 50 yr olds think teenagers act like

One thing I hate about Ginny's character, is that she ALWAYS gaslighting her mother to reveal childhood trauma. If someone doesn't feel comfortable revealing things like abuse or traumatic experiences, then don't pressure them too. She's always "if you truly love me, you would tell me..." Let Georgia tell u those things when she's ready and comfortable.
Right ! Like we get you want to know because your her daughter but your not the one who went through it and had to tell the story, that’s like a whole do over type of life . To even have to remember all of that when your trying to forget .
That’s not gaslighting. Gaslighting is if someone systematically manipulates someone into doubting their own perception so that they don’t trust their own reality anymore. It’s a severe form of abuse that leaves the victim believing they have psychosis.
THIS, my mother struggles with her emotions and stuff because of her traumatic childhood and can be emotionally withdrawn but I know its not her fault, she’s only the product of her environment of an endless cycle. my sister on the other hand is a little insensitive and can push a little too hard when it comes to my mother’s past, but i have never tried to pressure my mother into information about her past, of course im bound to be curious about my family history but im not dying to know about it. if my mother isnt comfy talking abt it i dont press, you don’t have a right to know everything abt someone’s life because you’re in love with them or love them or are related to them, everyone has a few secrets and that’s human, that’s healthy. whether if it’s something traumatic or just some embarrassing thing like the time u pooped ur pants that one time AND georgia is so respectful as a mother, she never presses ginny about talking to her abt anything, she still takes care of her and shows her unconditional love despite ginny being DOWNRIGHT disrespectful. georgia knows something is up with ginny and marcus but she isn’t gonna force her daughter to say anything she doesnt want to and will come to her when she can, that’s good parenting. but ginny somehow thinks shes entitled to know everything abt her mother even when she isnt comfy revealing it ??
That scene where Abby was crying about her friends not being there while her parents were going through a divorce, and the Ginny saying “I’ve had family issues too. It’s not always about you” was the final strike in my liking for her. I couldn’t even believe she would say something like that, if I were Abby I’d never speak to her again Also, I don’t think the essay thing was a “racial moment”. She wrote a poem, not an essay, so it makes sense that she didn’t win. It was good, but not what they asked for.
We can’t pretend like Abby wasn’t being mean to her though, and anytime Ginny was opening up about something she was in the corner rolling her eyes or huffing and puffing…which is probably why she said that

Ginny annoyed me I like many of the characters but she was constantly victimizing herself and always jumped to conclusions about people for no reason. i feel like they were trying to create a intelligent teen who knows what she wants or something but instead she came off really bratty, selfish, and annoying.
Honestly it made her a realistic teen to me tbh lmao. All the ones Iv met who take themselves too seriously often come off that way and even ones who dont STILL come off selfish, bratty, and annoying because they are still children and thats just how children act lmfao 😂🤷🏽♀️😂 Its actually funny to me wen ppl makes teens out to be that way as if its some anomaly wen its a staple of that time in a persons life we often like to think that we weren't that way and think of ourselves as more mature at the age of 16 but thats also just another selfish and partial picture of ourselves that we create to feel better about who we are. The best example is devi from never have I ever... She is selfish and on multiple occasions was rude and ungrateful to her mother and her 2 best friends but she was never an annoying character... Her problems were shown in such a way that the viewers understand why she acts that way... Also almost all the teenage characters from sex education as well... All characters are flawed but extremely interesting to watch...

Maybe bc they were teens navigating the most difficult period of human aging and riddled with hormones where as the adults were... grown. Making better decisions and acting better. Just as adults do (or at least should) off screen. I don't personally mind that the teens were flawed and made mistakes and acted irrationally. That's part and parcel of teen years.
i think ginny is SUPER selfish and that whole scene where her friend was like “i needed you” crying her eyes out and Ginny was just like “yeah well i’m going through stuff too. it’s not all about you” really made me hate her
i honestly didn’t like either of them in that moment... abby didn’t speak up about what was going on, then dramatically called a meeting with her friends to shame them for not being there for her. granted, it is important to check in on one’s friends, but realistically, your friends might not know you are struggling unless you tell them. it’s normal (but not great) for friends to not notice changes in their friend’s behavior because they are all wrapped up in their own stuff. either way, it was the wrong time for ginny to pull the “me too! what about me?” card
but honestly her friends were selfish trash. all four of them were going through stuff but acted liked ginny was the only one obligated to help them out. and her friend maxine really was the worst of all. a ‘me me me’ eccentric who has to have everyones attention at all times omg
I personally hated Ginny’s character all together. I felt like everything was so forced and a lot of the racial tension scenes fell flat. They seemed like a walking trope of a sort.
I kind of agree. Ginny just sees herself has a victim all the time. But, she is a teenager, so that's sort of to be expected. And I think the other characters (particularly her mom and Hunter), do a good job of putting her in her place

That’s how most of these shows go which is why I never try any of them today. It’s like issues are tried to some effect but it’s conveyed in this weird satire or parody like manner with how it doesn’t commit or it isn’t convincing and some cannot connect with it? Internet talks 24/7 about issues has also ruined its prevalence in media outside of documentaries today (in my opinion) and everybody is desensitized to it.

it did seem forced with the teacher and the whole stealing thing, but the way outlandish thing was the fact that they ‘couldn’t’ find her foundation shade, when she was literally the same shade if not lighter than the asian girl in their group.

Honestly my favourite character in the show is Joe. He's just the sweetest and he listens to everyone's problems. Maybe that's his way of escaping his own issues but he clearly cares about Georgia and he doesn't hesitate to show it. I honestly want to learn more about his character and i want to see his relationship with Georgia blossom.
I think if Ginny and Georgia had more than one poc on the production team there would be a better depiction of race and race struggles. But there’s literally 1 black woman and she’s an executive producer. The writers are both white women.
Ok, so Ginny & Georgia was shot in my province. My sister and I visited the sets before. On our initial visit to the set, the main actresses for Ginny and Georgia were there, but the costumes and side character casting were different. The actress for Georgia also did not speak with a Southern accent. My theory is that this show went through some rewrites to better suit Netflix's target. Eventually, the rewrites had an emphasis on racial issues.
They dont make bright, really girly, y2k, cringy but iconic, quotable movies like mean girls, clueless, wild child, john tucker must die, legally blonde, etc. anymore and that's just sad :(
I don't like Marcus that much, yeah he is very attractive but he is creepy. The guy climbed into a girl's bedroom multiple times without her consent with the intent to sleep with her. HOW IS THAT NOT WEIRD?? And the fact that Ginny never once called him out on it and instead went with it?? It makes no sense. I genuinely think Marcus only gets away with his creepy behaviour because he is attractive.

Idk this might actually be accurate to how teenagers can be sometimes. I’ve had friends be literally r****, abused, or gaslit by “cute” or “popular” boys. Some would even go on to date them, but didn’t come to terms with that fact until they got older. I agree tho it’s weird af and honestly sad.

But Ginny literally called him racial slurs and was racist towards him first, the only reason Hunter was racist towards Ginny was because she needed a reality check of her behaviour towards others. Was it the right moment for that? No but then again, they are teens and act on emotions like these much faster then thinking rationally so its not completely out of nowhere. Also "days without talking thats technically a break-up" is not valid. Its not a full on break-up so untill the both have communicated that they are officially done, not to mention she still acted like she did nothing wrong and that Hunter had no right to be mad at her for sleeping with Marcus.

I'm a young teen so I watched Disney still but I couldn't anymore cause it just got old. I wonder how the little boys felt. There was nothing for them really. They should make it equal not just cater to one gender. Edit: Since everyone is pitching a fit over me saying "boy power" I removed it. I couldn’t stand the way she treated the black girl that offered to hang out with her multiple times, she complained about being too black for white kids but when the opportunity was there she didn’t take it, and was really avoiding the black girl. Her “friend group” wasn’t real friends at all in my opinion, very fake. hopefully she learns that next season and finds REAL GOOD friendships.
I’m sorry but Ginny is a huge brat. Georgia is an amazing mother, she’s supportive and understanding and does everything for Ginny’s well-being, yet Ginny makes everything about herself and being insanely rude to Georgia.
Alright but you have to put yourself in Ginny's perspective as well; imagine your own mother made you move houses, friends and cities all the time and keeps you from having a stable lifestyle; imagine your mother hid the fact she had a sister and grandparents from you; imagine finding out she's a liar, hides a bunch of things and killed someone. Us watchers whilst viewing the show know Georgia's perspective and can feel for her, but Ginny being her DAUGHTER.... that has got to be hard....

i can understand why someone would think of her as a brat. But i think that she in fact is deeply traumatized by all the moving, the secrets and failed promises, maybe also the sexual assault by her stepdad, missing her real father etc etc. And besides that she is in puberty so finding her identity is hard enough. And again: I get why she comes across like a brat but i think there are reasons for her behavior

I will add that as someone who has their mom dating while a teenager, it can really make you resent them for it over time. we don’t know how georgia handled these relationships but from personal experience depending on how the parent handles it you can be left feeling like their new partner is the priority and sometimes it really is but usually it just feels that way. especially if you don’t like the partner, as ginny expressed at some points she didn’t like a lot of them (esp the last husband yikes). but all that being said, I’ve never even considered talking to my mother the way she does at times. especially after her telling her more about her past she barely showed any empathy which was really upsetting.

Right? I love my mom very much, but she is extremely busy and doesn't have a lot of time for me and my siblings. So it was annoying how much Ginny took Georgia for granted, whether it was the party she spent a lot of time and energy setting up or anything she would do for her.
Ginny only cared about racism when it benefited her to call it out. Exhibit A: the essay. She wanted a better grade and to get into the contest so she pulled the racism card. While the teacher was clearly biased in his other actions, she put it in the wrong format.
Agreed. I think the character of the teacher is a bit caricatural in a way too. He could have told her that her while it didn't fit the assigment, her writing was good and poetic and redirect her to a class/contest where that is encouraged.

Hey, I agree with what you said but the "not even completely black" is not really an okay statement to make. Biracial people get flack all the time about not being "completely" one or the other and it's always insensitive to our experiences. Ginny may have privilege because of her lighter skin tone but she's still a Black woman. Just because she's also half-white shouldn't take that away from her.

Am I the only one who noticed how toxic MANG was? They didn’t even seem like real friends just some people to hang out if they were bored. They didn’t stick up for each other or help one another. For me one of the scenes that really made me realize how toxic they were was when Abby was sad her parents were getting a divorce and no one was there for her at all. And then Ginny was like ‘I was having problems with family too’ which is true but, then she said ‘don’t make everything about you’ after she, Max and Nora ignored her (Abby) for a whole week? Abby isn’t perfect by any means and can be really rude but, at least she doesn’t blame everyone for things out of their control. She’s mad her only “friends” couldn’t talk to her for a whole week when she was going through something. Then, the worst part is after Abby slaps Ginny everything seems like a joke? They are all going through things and they just laugh it off even though they are dealing with serious topics. I don’t know if they did this so the show wouldn’t seem so serious and they wanted it to be more lighthearted but this makes MANG seem really toxic. I’m so tired of teenagers with y/n “I’m not like other girls” personality. (Also anyone notice how Abby was the only one who thought that the party Georgia had for Ginny was nice because her parents don’t pay attention to her? Georgia has done plenty of things good and bad but at least she has a reason.) Idk what the point of this rant is but I really hope they give some character development next season or just some personality.

I didn’t really like Abby at the start (yk the stealing thing and stuff) but by the end I really related to her. My parents aren’t divorced but I really relate to her friends kinda ignoring her for a week and her parents not really caring. Also, I agree that MANG is toxic but I’ve had plenty of intense moments with my friends that kinda just turn into laughter

I also liked how she kind of came up for georgia by saying the bday party was really nice when ginny was being all bratty about it.

They did apologize. They showed up with tons of different make up shades in hopes of finding one to match her complexion and she was like "why" and they were like "because we feel bad, you're our friend."
I’m not gonna lie Marcus was pretty toxic but I feel like he’s the better fit for Ginny. She seemed way more open and felt more comfortable around him than she did with Hunter. Cause while she does have feelings for Hunter she was really pressured into that relationship by her friends. He’s a good guy and he doesn’t deserve the hate he gets but I just don’t think him and Ginny click like that.
I think Marcus is bad but that Ginny and him deserve each other. Everybody in the friend group is going the extra mile for Ginny for no reason like she's the most amazing person, they don't even treat eachother like that although they've been friends for years. Marcus is full of flaws but so is Ginny and that's why they make more sense as a pair.

I agree with your points. How this show addresses race is lackluster. The racist people are kind of caricaturist and the scenarios make no sense( in what hs is a room of one’s own on the reading syllabus? Why would the black girl have an issue with her dressing like Britney? She looked good and who doesn’t love Britney?, etc) but I definitely have known biracial people like Ginny who seem super militant about pro blackness despite choosing to be a token and the fact that their experiences do not reflect the ire they have for the world. Like I’m clearly black and I have not had many overt racist attacks certainly not enough to propel me to stand up to a non politically correct teacher who responsible for my grade and like get on his case about a syllabus that he didn’t even curate. I was an outsider too and I rather die than get on my soapbox over some bullshit
I definitely understand where you’re coming from. And I think you raise a good point, there are plenty of biracial/mixed people who are pro-black activist etc. I think it would’ve made for a interesting route for Ginny since race identity was apart of her storyline.
Also, the race conversation surrounded the 2 biracial characters. You had a Jewish east Asian girl in the friendship group and 2 dusky brown girls, Sophie and padma. I was so annoyed that they made race a focus in the show but just forgot about the other dark skinned characters and the racism they face.
I think she stood up to that teacher bc she felt like she had to "prove" her blackness... kind of confusing on the writers part bc after that she pretty much ignores all the black people

Ginnys lack of empathy for her mother really stood out enough for me to not be able to look past it. A scene that really got me was when she goes out with her friends without telling her mom. All her mother wanted was to make sure she was and stayed safe. Then there’s her pressuring her mother into explaining her past and then completely falling apart because of it. 🏃♀️
I actually liked the fight between Ginny & Hunter People bash it bc they say it was racist but i think that’s the point. They want to show the real conversations minorities have. I also love how Hunter called her out on her bs, and i think he said those things back to her so she can see how hypocritical she sounded, not bc he actually meant them. Glad you appreciated it, too!

As a multiracial teen, I actually think that Ginny (and Hunters) storyline started off realistic, however, Ginny’s self-hatred got to a point where it went past racial insecurity and into paranoia about everyone being racist towards her. I personally think that her hanging out with mostly white people was realistic; she chose a group and stuck with it, but the whole argument with Hunter was just… a mess and her whole storyline with the black girl was weird because I don’t get why she wouldn’t just be friends with her from the beginning ( + the whole Britney Spears comment was just sooo randomly thrown in there). How Hunter handled Ginny’s whole freak out about losing the competition was actually my one and only favorite moment of his, but him and Georgia were really the only characters that realistically represented race struggles in my opinion. I wish they would have consulted or hired a biracial writer to help them out with race and Ginny’s whole character because she made me want to turn off the tv every damn scene.
another thing that bothers me is that ginny has such an “i’m not like other girls” attitude as well as a severe victim mentality. like “i’m so quirky for wearing pink floyd shirts and flannels and creating false tension and passing it off as calling out bigotry” gets really old really fast. idk maybe i’m reading too much into it but does anyone else feel this way? i’d love to hear other opinions! this whole show just gives me very strong pick me girl vibes and i couldn’t even get through the first episode

For Ginny, I think we would have empathized more with her if we had some flashbacks of what her other schools were like. I know we’ve heard her _say_ she hasn’t fit in at her other schools but showing some examples would have explained why she was so ready to jump into her new life of popularity. I also think there should have been flashbacks of how Georgia parented Ginny in the past. Again, it’s heavily implied that Georgia was not a good parent but seeing it would have made us understand why she was so rude to her.
I was in elementary school when Britney was popular. In my class, there were kids of many races, black, white, whatever. We all liked Nsync, Britney, Christina Aguilera, and Backstreet Boys. I remember the boys dressing similar to Nsync and frosting the tips of their hair like Justin Timberlake did at that time. God, I miss the 90s and early 2000s.

I'm Latina (Peruvian-Venezuelan specifically), I definitely agree w/ the whole "oh hey, u're like me, let's talk!!" thing, I found out the kid sitting in front of me in my Religion class was Colombian and felt much more comfortable talking to him, same with the girl sitting next to me in History after finding out she was Venezuelan
Same! I’m Colombian but there seems to be no Colombian or South American in the areas I’ve lived in here in the states. Sure there’s some Mexicans but it’s not the same, the culture and way of speaking is very different. I also wish our culture and community was portrayed more in the media. These shows are great at showing a diverse group of people but the Latino community always seems to be missing or lacking a presence.

The city in Ontario (Canada) I live in has SO MANY Colombians, but it's to a point where the Latino community became a Colombian community and everyone else is kinda shut out But I do agree w/ u, I wish there was more representation for us within media (also I wish ppl understood that Latinos don't just look like the stereotype they're portraid as in media, but that's a other story)

Having a consultant and following that consultants views/credits aren't the same thing.
I'm half black and something that made me want to scream was whenever Ginny would sort of dismiss the invitations from other black characters while in the same breath complaining about not fitting in. And I actually really like Ginny. She definitely needs work and has some major problems but for majority of her actions I could kind of empathize with her. I think a lot of people dismissed her trauma because they loved Georgia so much and because they just didn't like Ginny which is unfair. Neither one of them had a particularly great childhood. I think people were much more willing to give grace towards Georgia while expecting Ginny to be perfect. But I think a decent amount of the criticism towards Ginny is understandable. One of my biggest issues with the viewer reaction was how everyone has been treating Hunter. I feel like besides being cringy at times, he literally did nothing wrong. I truly believe that if people found him more attractive, people would have liked him. Marcus was the creepy one if you want to be honest. This man just barged in her room countless times without asking. People only liked him because he's attractive. But overall, I actually really enjoyed the show and am really excited for season two.

I agree with the Hunter point. Marcus reminds me of Jess from Gilmore Girls -- very moody and push-and-pull, yet people still like him because he's attractive. Media often conditions audiences to find toxic behaviour "hot". Ginny and Marcus had obvious chemistry, but that's not a sole reason for people to enter a relationship. Though if I'm being honest, she and Hunter also lacked chemistry and a good dynamic. Regardless, he was a much kinder person than Marcus and seemed to really care about Ginny. People hate on him way too much. I sort of wish Ginny had ended up single in the end. I think it would have been an interesting "plot twist" of sorts and I think neither of the guys were really "right for her".
I know it's important to address issues like racism in a show and I think that's great too. But Ginny's only personality is being sassy and mixed. I wish we could have gotten a more interesting character who also has a real personality, besides being rude to everyone. Sometimes she seems like the gay secondary character in Netflix films. Their only personality is also to be gay. I understand that Netflix wants us to see it as normal, which we do!, but if they show it off that strange, including the racism in Ginny & Georgia, then it's just weird
As a black girl, I agree with all your critique about how the show handled race. There's so many more opinions I have about the series too, but I just have to say that Ginny's friends were absolute shit, especially Abby and Norah, and that Joe was such a cutie pie. I love him
But it is pretty weird that georgia let her drive through states they had never been to and knew little about roads and freeways when she just had a permit.
I know in States like Georgia you can get a permit at 15. But in states like Pennsylvania, it's 16. So having her drive across state lines is dumb unless you know for sure.

Something that really annoyed me throughout the show was how ginny finds everything racist. Granted, there were a few times where ppl treated her differently due to her race but a lot of the time she hid behind it as an excuse. Like that time she was supposed to write a speech for her english class and she came with her slam poetry type thing...she didnt win cuz she didnt do wat was asked, not cuz shes black. Then she goes and points fingers at her teacher...the whole racism thing seemed very forced, and while it is an issue that needs to have light shed on it, the way this show did it was at times very distasteful and took away from wat big of a problem racism actually is.

So I’m white af but I was also born with 3B hair and the only one in my entire family with curly hair. That meant I had a mom with straight hair taking care of my curly hair. People with straight hair just don’t understand just how different curly hair is. You can’t treat it like straight hair. A lot of times with people like me who have parents with straight hair you grow up with a shit ton of hair damage just because of the lack of knowledge over how it’s supposed to be cared for.
I’m black and my mom grew up with textured hair as well as me and she never made Ann effort to take care of it when I was little. She just got it relaxed which damaged my hair.

In my opinion Ginny and Georgia just feels like another straight people, white washed, Riverdale-esc show. It’s somewhat annoying and panders to a certain audience that just screams basic and flavorless, and in a certain way it’s insensitive to not only the topic of racism and being biracial, but teenage sexuality and pregnancy. It kinda plays out like a poorly written Wattpad fan fiction and I honestly couldn’t stand it. However, I will say that the plot itself wasn’t so bad, it was just poorly executed and written. Personally wasn’t my favorite, and I genuinely feel as though the people behind the show could of done so much more storytelling wise and character wise (mainly with Ginny).

He literally made a misogynistic comment in the beginning too and I feel like nobody is talking about it. He said “girls always want an Insta on the motorcycle” and then Ginny KISSED him like what. I hated that and I wish they wouldn’t have made Ginny kiss him after being misogynistic, and they didn’t engage with that comment at all. They left it there as if he didn’t just make a messed up comment.

At least Ginny is struggling, Abby has body image issues, Hunter has a self-identity crisis, etc. Anyways my point is with all the other characters you can offer an explanation as to why they’re the way they are. Max literally has NO reason for her to be that selfish and entitled. All her problems are so first world and surface level yet she always thinks she deserves the most attention. She really got mad at Ginny, Abby, and Marcus in the season finale when they treated her WAY better than she’s EVER treated them. Like remember how Marcus was so caring to her when she was drunk yet she through him right under the bus when she told Ellen about him and Ginny or said nothing when he got punched by Hunter when he had a CONCUSSION? Idk there’s just so many other examples of her being incredibly self-involved that I don’t feel like listing . Overall she’s such a HORRIBLE friend and sister yet everyone gives her a pass and have no problems slandering the others like Ginny.
Personally, I only watched the few episodes of the show that I did for Georgia, and I think she is by far the best character. However, Ginny totally ruined the show for me, so I'm going to vent about how much I dislike her. BTW, I am not trying to send hate to Antonia Gentry, and I totally understand if you disagree with me; this is just my opinion. 1. She's so self centered. She constantly puts herself before everyone else and thinks everything revolves around her. The first episode I saw of Ginny and Georgia was the one with the "Oppression Olympics", and even though the said "Oppression Olympics" was the worst part of it by far, the way she treated Abby, who was going through her parents divorcing, cemented my hatred of her. Abby is literally falling apart and desperate for support from her vacant friends, and this girl has the nerve to say "Not everything is always about you" and call her a b**? What the hell? 2. She constantly disrespects her mom. Is Georgia always perfect? No, but she went through SO MUCH for her daughter and did so much to make her have a better life. She deserves so much respect, but no. She gets endless disrespect from Ginny, constant rants about how she's the "worst mom ever", and being told by her daughter "You just don't get it!" 500 billion times. JUSTICE FOR GEORGIA. 3. She exudes so much TikTok "main character energy" that it makes me itch. From the way she preforms her slam poetry to how she acts at the concert, it's just SO CRINGY and I hate it. However, I don't think the actress is bad at all, I really just think it's the character and the writing.

One of the first things they did was take her to a store to steal (something you could tell they did on the regular) and when Georgia showed up, they blamed it on Ginny saying they had no idea she would steal and that it was her that put them up to it. You lost me on Abby. She's not warranting any sympathies from the friends or the audience. True, she's dealing with parents divorce, but it's not like her fiends knew about it and ignored her. Also, she's perceived as the most woke of them all, yet chooses to act out. Separate that which you are allowed to see from the what is revealed to the characters. We see Abby's issues like we see Georgia's baggage, but they are not revealed to the others. Remain in the frame.

i feel like a really fundamental problem of the show is that, well, many of the characters (especially the teens) have HUGE flaws, that aren't acknowledged at all! don't get me wrong, they shouldn't be perfect people by any means, but those flaws are completely ignored, often even the show treats the behavior caused by them as ok. for example - Max flipping out at Ginny for sleeping with her brother, and Abby for not telling her. like i get that she's upset that her friend wasn't being honest with her but she was acting like she was brutally personally attacked, showing that she shares a flaw with ginny - making everything about herself. when the group pretty much ghosted Abby when she needed them the most, after she opened up about her struggles ginny accused her of being egocentric, instead of accepting that everyone has their own problems, and that she can't feel betrayed like abby does, because she didn't even reach out to anyone for help. Abby and Norah are more in the background, but I liked them very much. all of their flaws seem like they're added on purpose and the creators of the show are aware of them. apart from being kinda cringe hunter is meh, but some of the things he says during his argument with ginny are really disgusting and i can't look at him the same way after that. Marcus is really edgy, which i personally find annoying, but it's not like that's objectively bad. also as many people have already said, if he wasn't attractive his behavior would be considered creepy. I also felt like making him have a friend who dies of cancer (who isnt even named or acknowledged by anyone apart from Marcus) and have a car accident were supposed to artificially make people feel sympathetic towards him, and I didn't like that cuz it felt kinda forced. in the end i think that the storylines of the adults were much more interesting than the teens, but the latter stories aren't complete garbage, they're just kinda mediocre
I think that’s pretty valid. Georgia’s storyline was the best of the show. As far as the teens, Max definitely overreacted about Ginny and Marcus. It just wasn’t that deep. Abby and Norah were terrible friends and a bit of a cliche but as far as their personal issues, I think the writers did a good job with the direction they are going in with them. Hunters character definitely could’ve been written better. He was a bit one dimensional. But as for Marcus, I actually think he had no edge. The “edge” was forced. Nothing about him was mysterious or dangerous or anything that qualifies. But I could just be missing it. Lol
Max wasn't upset ginny slept with her brother,max was upset that ginny made a whole night of them losing their virginities together(which was a big deal for her) when ginny had already lost hers way before that and didn't tell max. At least from what i remember.

**SPOILERS** I watched this show a while back, and it was one of the better drama/coming of age shows I've watched. It had decent writing and it was entertaining enough to binge through fairly quick. The only real thing I wasn't fond of was how they wrote Ginny. My take on her was at first she was the new girl, shy and just feeling out her new town while trying to not get too attached since she may move away soon. But when she cheated on Hunter with Marcus and got caught she was upset at those who caught her not at her actions. She became a sort of self-centered person, maybe it was because of her bad choice in friends or her bad surroundings. She got upset with Max when Max figured out she was hooking up with her brother when it was her fault for not telling Max! And also closer to the end of the season Ginny started to be a bad friend and more focused on her guys (plural) than her best friend. This was when Max had just been broken up with by her gf, Ginny decides to go and make out with her brother as Max is upset. So yeah, Ginny was a complex character who I wanted to root for. Intentional or not, she went from nice to self-centered real quick.
Ginny is a huge part of the problem of the show. I don't know how you see it as a better show when the main protagonist is so poorly written and clearly dissected ad nauseum.
I actually like Bracia and I feel like Ginny did her really dirty. She blew her off and wouldn't give her the time of day until her other friends didn't want anything to do with her. I would have given her the same energy back, but Bracia was cool and supported her while everyone else shunned her.
Girl I hated the way Ginny's character was towards her mom and the decision she made at the end like I thought it was so irrational and irresponsible. I liked the show and Georgia was my favorite too for sure, and I didn't think it was fair the way Ginny chose to see her and treat her like she did something so horrible when she was doing it all for her kids
I actually can relate to Ginny about her relationship with her mother. I think a lot of people can’t really understand how is it truly feels like. It’s not that cool having a mom who act like “I’m a cool mother” Switching so fast a partner and watching how she cheats on her partner is really uncomfortable and can give a lot of trauma that can affect your life in the future. I noticed it after therapy that a lot of “small things” change your view on life. In the show you can see that she is doing very similar things as her mother as cheating, having sex with people she shouldn’t because they have a partner. Her mother does a lot of things for her but I think Ginnie needs more of emotional support because we see often how she acts towards her mother when she gives her that. Ginny is actually really alone with HER problems like struggling with depression, love life and having friends. I was molested too by my stepfather but I lived with him for a very long time and after this my whole life changed and my mother’s too. I don’t really like Ginny and I love how her mother’s character is written. But I really can understand why Ginny is ungrateful. I need to add that it’s hard to trust to a person who hides something and I was so angry at my mother when I find out that she started dating someone when she still didn’t finished things with my stepfather. Also I need too add that how Ginny look at racism is annoying as hell but I think that is necessary to show later her character development. Blaming others is kind of running away from your problems and I think it’s why she does that even without knowing. She is annoying but I can understand why

Just to play devil in this arugment not only did Ginny disrecpect her mother days before and on her birthday, where her mom AT LEAST blew 1200 dollars on her B day Ginny had the nerve to leave the safely of her house to party with white people when her mom did everything to make her birthday special ofc the mom is going to be pissed and not think staright because she been drinking because she been stressed out from her daughter blaming her for everything even though Geroge does everything for her. I think that she tries to understand as best as she can but sometimes it comes off as a little bit ignorant or maybe exaggerated because obviously she hasn't experienced it herself.
As a black women I absolutely agree with Georgia leaving Ginny in the jail. She spent so much money that she already didn’t have and put in time and effort to make Ginny bday special for her and she sneaks out to go drink with a bunch of white kids who don’t have her best interest at heart ( Abby literally posted the video of drunk ginny) and Georgia knew that but ginny is to stupid to see it
Can we please talk about the Georgia, Paul, Zion love triangle😭? (Ik that Joe likes Georgia and he is great BUT he kinda doesn't count) Despite being bi-racial, myself and understanding identity and that whole bi-racial struggle, I couldn't emotionally relate to almost anything but the episode when Zion tried to make things work with Georgia and then Paul "proposing". I think I liked that part of the show the best. Zion is Ginny's father, he loves her and her mom(and Austin), he's an adult now he wants to shed his old history and have a future w his family but that gets murdered 😭 bc Georgia is in a happy relationship w a good guy. The only part that made me feel something throughout this entire show. I think that's just such an underrated part of the show and mirrors what a lot of people go through. U don't want to let go of someone bc of history, memories, and them being a "safe space" but what about the future? Will u go back to that toxic relationship or stay in a healthy one? I love that so much!
It’s definitely a great part of the story that people can relate to! It’s like on paper the mayor looked like the perfect candidate for her (no pun intended lol). And Zion was a reminder of her past life but also one of the best parts of it since she experienced so much trauma. I also think Joe is such a nice guy and they would make a great pair. It’ll be interesting to see how he expresses himself in the next season with her being engaged and all. But I agree with you. I think we’ve all faced a situation like that to a certain level lol. I’m curious to know from you, as a bi-racial person, what was the disconnect for you with that storyline?

I also think that your answer shows your self-confidence. Unfortunately, many people who keep themselves in a box don’t have that level of confidence and subsequently find themselves in Ginny’s position. Like all the side remarks from her friends about finding the right shade of makeup, or her hair getting puffy when she was getting her hair combed. I think Ginny actually not making as big of an effort to socialise with the other black kids at her school makes a lot of sense. Being bi-racial myself and growing up in an all white neighbourhood, going to an all white school, being around predominantly white family members is pretty much all I knew. She probably felt too awkward to really try, she seems to lack in the cultural understanding of the black experience. Albeit, I hate that the show low-key made it look like the other black character was being kind of purposely isolating after the Britney thing, like no one would have that reaction lol. Also, I don’t know if this is a reach but, I felt uncomfortable when Georgia called the police on her black daughter. Now Ginny is bi-racial, yes, but she is very evidently black presenting and still a poc. I don’t think Georgia meant any genuine harm and was trying to teach her snarky daughter a lesson, but it just sort of reinstated this power and dominance that white parents can have over their black children, it’s quite unfortunate but I’ve heard a lot of stories of similar situations. I can only imagine how terrifying it must be to have to live with a violently racist parent (not referring to our Queen Georgia) and be hyper aware of how they’ll next punish you for something you do wrong.
Valid points. Though I only viewed Georgia calling the police as her just being a parent teaching a lesson. The reason being is because I didn’t see micro-aggressions in her that would suggest otherwise. But like you said, unfortunately there are situations with white parents with black kids where you never know where it’s leading to.

I totally agree, I’m also bi-racial and I’ve always was teased even by some of my African American friends about how “unblack” I was because I was part Asian but the Asian kids would never look my way. I think as bi racial kids were always having the bi part throw at us that we don’t know which group we belong to, and if we do find a group the other side has to be thrown away in an effort to fit in.
I feel like the rising popularity of social movements has writers feeling like they can slap a social problem on a show or movie and have it be successful. Which is really frustrating because a lot of these topics actually have more depth and complexity than most when you explore them. Ginny is a poor man’s Kat Stratford starring in a badly stitched up mish-mash of tumblr posts, twitter quotes, and everybody clapped moments.
I feel like you guys are missing part of the Halloween party interaction w/ Ginny and the black girl she keeps curving. Read the room, literally, Ginny just finished twerking in front of a room full of white people. The black girl is not really checking her for her costume but how playing both sides can be damaging. As a black woman that dance scene made me super uncomfortable because of hyper-sexualization (at some point there’s also a really awkward racial comment by some dude bro about Ginny’s ass). When I was Ginny’s age I did dumb stuff like that with my majority white friends without thinking of how black bodies have been put on display for entertainment and profit throughout history. Ginny didn’t get that she was playing out a minstrel fantasy for those kids at a deeper level. I’m sure other black people have gotten comments about how they’re supposed to be good dancers etc in their lives. Before I get comments about how it’s just a dance party- tell me why they asked *Ginny* specifically to start twerking? And none of her fake friends joined in?
I understand your point and I do think it has to do with the context but I also think that maybe that scene was trying to show exactly what you're talking about, just her doing dumb sh*t and not knowing how to act feeling like she doesn't fit in with white people or with black people. That scene clearly focuses on teenagers doing stupid sh*t, all of them get super drunk and embarrass themselves. And I think the girl did judge her for her costume too, like "why are you trying to act white when you're not" kinda thing, because she asked her "What are you?" when Ginny clearly was Britney and then said "That's what you picked?" in a sarcastic way, which to Ginny replies that it wasn't her idea as if she needed to justify herself. It's clearly so wrong to judge her for that, the costume doesn't have to do with race in my opinion, it was a group costume with her friends, they all went as Bitney. Also I might be wrong but I don't think it's fair to judge her for playing both sides when she's part of both cultures.

As a biracial women, some of these experiences feel familiar to me. Not to say there are the representation of racism for all people of color, but particularly for biracial people, who can “walk the line” with our skin color, it is hard to know when something is racial motived towards us or just something we feel in our heads. Maybe that is exactly how the situation would have gone for a light skinned girl versus a complete different outcome for a dark skinned girl. And it is important to point out that in these situations, the lightness or darkness of our melanin determines how heavy our profiling will be.That is what makes colorism run deep inside and outside the black community.
I also loved this show, and so did my friend, which is unfortunate, but I’ll get to that. So something that has really deeply upset me is the way they presented self harm. I wouldn’t say it glorifies it, but there was a failure to present the idea that there are healthier coping mechanisms. But no, Ginny just continued. And it was brushed over so much. See going back to my friend, she watched this series a few weeks before I did, and while she was watching it she was obsessed and told me to watch. I didn’t have time yet so I put off. Anyway she was also dealing with a lot of issues at home at that time. Then found out she had been self harming. We supported her, and helped her see different ways to cope, and thankfully she hasn’t done it since. But then a little while after that happened, I watched this show. As I watched the show, it didn’t click straight away, but after I finished it I was thinking about, like I said before, I don’t like how they presented self harm, and then it hit me that my friend had seen this and it planted the idea in her head, rather than educate her of the better, less harmful ways of coping. I can see now that my friend, and potentially many other young girl, had seen this act of self harm, she subconsciously romanticised it, believed she was a lost, rogue, misunderstood girl too, and this was how to deal with it. You can say that’s naive, but when you’re mentally fragile (like a lot of people at present), these things can have a huge impact.
Oh wow sorry to hear about your friend but glad you guys rallied around her and she’s better. I definitely think that part of the story was underdeveloped. And I told someone else, I think since Netflix didn’t know at first that there would be a second season, they should’ve shown a resolution for her. I know a lot of people deal with that and it would’ve helped.
Sometimes I think that a lot of people didn’t like The show because we’re not used to seeing so many characters with different layers, specially people of color. I think we cringe at seeing people of color make mistakes or simply behaving in a way they are not expected. That said, as a filmmaker I understand the choices they made with each scene and character. About the Taylor Swift line, as I said, we are not used to seeing a tv show where we need to think. This line was a choice for this character for a reason, and I think in that case it was to make a point: This character IS talking shit. That is a shitty argument to make. They chose a “wrong joke” or line on purpose to show how this character is not thinking straight. Not because they thought it was appropriate, just the opondo-te, because it’s what the character would say in real life. Sorry for the english, love from Brasil!
I totally agree with you, I think the point of the show is to show how they are being real human beings who make mistakes, don't have any clue on how to deal with their own problems, there were a lot of weird scenes that I hated lol but i think it was supposed to be like that in some kind of way
I agree cuz everyone in these comments is so upset but all these imperfects made the series good. This rlly did portray real life. People can be selfish, mean, lack understanding, and impulsive, and they showed that. And everyone keeps questioning why Ginny would say one thing and then do another, but that’s life. A lot of people make mistakes like that. And this movie is through the perspective of ONE girl. Everyone is dissing her for how she thinks and to be more like the other characters but like thats how she is and I like how she’s not basic. Ofc it’s annoying at times but that’s how life is. U can’t always like someone even if it’s the main character in a movie
That’s a great point. However, I think it’s reasonable to expect film and show makers to be conscious of their viewers, and thinks in a way that won’t be taken offensively. Like putting in real scenarios such as that, but making it more obvious that it is meant to represent something “wrong”

I really liked this review and your critiques, it was different than a lot of other reviews I’ve seen of the show and that was refreshing.
I also thought it was weird that Ginny did all those things with Marcus so fast within the first two days of moving to a new town, but I read an interesting post online that attributed that impulsive behavior to a coping mechanism borne out of trauma. It was a way for Ginny to regain control over her sexuality and bodily autonomy after her creepy stepdad touched her. Idk if that’s what the writers were intending, but I think Ginny’s romantic relationships make more sense when viewing them from that perspective. Otherwise the only explanation is that she’s a teenager ruled by hormones and they’re trying to show how she’s similar to her mom. But I think all of those explanations can exist at once.
You know what, now that you say it, I definitely can see how her experience with the stepfather could play a part in her behavior. Hadn’t thought of it that way. I think the reasons coexist like you stated.... thank you for watching love. I appreciate it. 💗

It's also you gotta do what's best for you to make it day by day to survive no matter how much hearts you break.(That's why the flower was symbolic of symbolism as giving someone a heart attack)

That’s immediately what I took it as. When I was younger I had a ton of grooming experiences with men and my way of getting that out was to full fledge embrace my sexuality in some questionable ways that I thought made sense at the time. She’s trying to reclaim her body and grasp onto anything that can make her feel like she has control again, even if it comes with unintentionally hurting some people in the process, as it’s the only way she knows to feel complete or empowered. She’s a kid acting from trauma and bad coping mechanisms, the logical “what if I get pregnant and turn into my mom” thought isn’t in her head at all.
What trauma? We haven't seen it yet. Moving around is not traumatic unless you are living in a hostel, in a car, or on the street. I am not sure we should give them a season to make up something because I doubt she will ever be someone we like.

They only bond when Ginny faces racism with the teacher in that one episode and runs to the bathroom.

It really annoyed me when Ginny and Hunter were having an argument about the english essay, Ginny put it in the wrong format, and she assumed her teacher was being racist.
Well ,it was passive racism. As a teacher you’re supposed to encourage your students to think outside of the box and the fact that she found a creative way to tell her story shouldn’t have disqualified her from the competition. If anything, it gave her a leg up.

THIS, my mother struggles with her emotions and stuff because of her traumatic childhood and can be emotionally withdrawn but I know its not her fault, she’s only the product of her environment of an endless cycle. my sister on the other hand is a little insensitive and can push a little too hard when it comes to my mother’s past, but i have never tried to pressure my mother into information about her past, of course im bound to be curious about my family history but im not dying to know about it. if my mother isnt comfy talking abt it i dont press, you don’t have a right to know everything abt someone’s life because you’re in love with them or love them or are related to them, everyone has a few secrets and that’s human, that’s healthy. whether if it’s something traumatic or just some embarrassing thing like the time u pooped ur pants that one time AND georgia is so respectful as a mother, she never presses ginny about talking to her abt anything, she still takes care of her and shows her unconditional love despite ginny being DOWNRIGHT disrespectful. georgia knows something is up with ginny and marcus but she isn’t gonna force her daughter to say anything she doesnt want to and will come to her when she can, that’s good parenting. but ginny somehow thinks shes entitled to know everything abt her mother even when she isnt comfy revealing it ??

Ok, so Ginny & Georgia was shot in my province. My sister and I visited the sets before. On our initial visit to the set, the main actresses for Ginny and Georgia were there, but the costumes and side character casting were different. The actress for Georgia also did not speak with a Southern accent. My theory is that this show went through some rewrites to better suit Netflix's target. Eventually, the rewrites had an emphasis on racial issues.

I will add that as someone who has their mom dating while a teenager, it can really make you resent them for it over time. we don’t know how georgia handled these relationships but from personal experience depending on how the parent handles it you can be left feeling like their new partner is the priority and sometimes it really is but usually it just feels that way. especially if you don’t like the partner, as ginny expressed at some points she didn’t like a lot of them (esp the last husband yikes). but all that being said, I’ve never even considered talking to my mother the way she does at times. especially after her telling her more about her past she barely showed any empathy which was really upsetting.

Am I the only one who noticed how toxic MANG was? They didn’t even seem like real friends just some people to hang out if they were bored. They didn’t stick up for each other or help one another.
For me one of the scenes that really made me realize how toxic they were was when Abby was sad her parents were getting a divorce and no one was there for her at all. And then Ginny was like ‘I was having problems with family too’ which is true but, then she said ‘don’t make everything about you’ after she, Max and Nora ignored her (Abby) for a whole week? Abby isn’t perfect by any means and can be really rude but, at least she doesn’t blame everyone for things out of their control. She’s mad her only “friends” couldn’t talk to her for a whole week when she was going through something. Then, the worst part is after Abby slaps Ginny everything seems like a joke? They are all going through things and they just laugh it off even though they are dealing with serious topics. I don’t know if they did this so the show wouldn’t seem so serious and they wanted it to be more lighthearted but this makes MANG seem really toxic. I’m so tired of teenagers with y/n “I’m not like other girls” personality.

My parents aren’t divorced but I really relate to her friends kinda ignoring her for a week and her parents not really caring. Also, I agree that MANG is toxic but I’ve had plenty of intense moments with my friends that kinda just turn into laughter

I also liked how she kind of came up for georgia by saying the bday party was really nice when ginny was being all bratty about it.

I’m not gonna lie Marcus was pretty toxic but I feel like he’s the better fit for Ginny. She seemed way more open and felt more comfortable around him than she did with Hunter. Cause while she does have feelings for Hunter she was really pressured into that relationship by her friends. He’s a good guy and he doesn’t deserve the hate he gets but I just don’t think him and Ginny click like that.

I agree with your points. How this show addresses race is lackluster. The racist people are kind of caricaturist and the scenarios make no sense( in what hs is a room of one’s own on the reading syllabus? Why would the black girl have an issue with her dressing like Britney? She looked good and who doesn’t love Britney?, etc) but I definitely have known biracial people like Ginny who seem super militant about pro blackness despite choosing to be a token and the fact that their experiences do not reflect the ire they have for the world. Like I’m clearly black and I have not had many overt racist attacks certainly not enough to propel me to stand up to a non politically correct teacher who responsible for my grade and like get on his case about a syllabus that he didn’t even curate. Also, the race conversation surrounded the 2 biracial characters. You had a Jewish east Asian girl in the friendship group and 2 dusky brown girls, Sophie and padma. I was so annoyed that they made race a focus in the show but just forgot about the other dark skinned characters and the racism they face.

Ginnys lack of empathy for her mother really stood out enough for me to not be able to look past it. A scene that really got me was when she goes out with her friends without telling her mom. All her mother wanted was to make sure she was and stayed safe. Then there’s her pressuring her mother into explaining her past and then completely falling apart because of it. 🏃♀️

People bash it bc they say it was racist but i think that’s the point. They want to show the real conversations minorities have.
I also love how Hunter called her out on her bs, and i think he said those things back to her so she can see how hypocritical she sounded, not bc he actually meant them.

As a multiracial teen, I actually think that Ginny (and Hunters) storyline started off realistic, however, Ginny’s self-hatred got to a point where it went past racial insecurity and into paranoia about everyone being racist towards her. I personally think that her hanging out with mostly white people was realistic; she chose a group and stuck with it, but the whole argument with Hunter was just… a mess and her whole storyline with the black girl was weird because I don’t get why she wouldn’t just be friends with her from the beginning ( + the whole Britney Spears comment was just sooo randomly thrown in there). How Hunter handled Ginny’s whole freak out about losing the competition was actually my one and only favorite moment of his, but him and Georgia were really the only characters that realistically represented race struggles in my opinion. I wish they would have consulted or hired a biracial writer to help them out with race and Ginny’s whole character because she made me want to turn off the tv every damn scene.

I know we’ve heard her _say_ she hasn’t fit in at her other schools but showing some examples would have explained why she was so ready to jump into her new life of popularity. I also think there should have been flashbacks of how Georgia parented Ginny in the past. Again, it’s heavily implied that Georgia was not a good parent but seeing it would have made us understand why she was so rude to her.

I was in elementary school when Britney was popular. In my class, there were kids of many races, black, white, whatever. We all liked Nsync, Britney, Christina Aguilera, and Backstreet Boys. Same! I’m Colombian but there seems to be no Colombian or South American in the areas I’ve lived in here in the states. Sure there’s some Mexicans but it’s not the same, the culture and way of speaking is very different. I also wish our culture and community was portrayed more in the media. These shows are great at showing a diverse group of people but the Latino community always seems to be missing or lacking a presence.

@@laylah7806 Let me take a jab...the show isn't doing what you suggest, because they are attempting to know racism from the perspective of the victims thereof, and thus they need more than a token consultant to provide that perspective. Having a consultant and following that consultants views/credits aren't the same thing.
I'm half black and something that made me want to scream was whenever Ginny would sort of dismiss the invitations from other black characters while in the same breath complaining about not fitting in. And I actually really like Ginny. She definitely needs work and has some major problems but for majority of her actions I could kind of empathize with her. I think a lot of people dismissed her trauma because they loved Georgia so much and because they just didn't like Ginny which is unfair. Neither one of them had a particularly great childhood. I think people were much more willing to give grace towards Georgia while expecting Ginny to be perfect. But I think a decent amount of the criticism towards Ginny is understandable.
One of my biggest issues with the viewer reaction was how everyone has been treating Hunter. I feel like besides being cringy at times, he literally did nothing wrong. I truly believe that if people found him more attractive, people would have liked him. Marcus was the creepy one if you want to be honest. This man just barged in her room countless times without asking. People only liked him because he's attractive.
But overall, I actually really enjoyed the show and am really excited for season two.

I agree with the Hunter point. Marcus reminds me of Jess from Gilmore Girls -- very moody and push-and-pull, yet people still like him because he's attractive. Media often conditions audiences to find toxic behaviour "hot". Ginny and Marcus had obvious chemistry, but that's not a sole reason for people to enter a relationship. Though if I'm being honest, she and Hunter also lacked chemistry and a good dynamic. Regardless, he was a much kinder person than Marcus and seemed to really care about Ginny. People hate on him way too much.
I sort of wish Ginny had ended up single in the end. I think it would have been an interesting "plot twist" of sorts and I think neither of the guys were really "right for her".

Something that really annoyed me throughout the show was how ginny finds everything racist. Granted, there were a few times where ppl treated her differently due to her race but a lot of the time she hid behind it as an excuse. Like that time she was supposed to write a speech for her english class and she came with her slam poetry type thing...she didnt win cuz she didnt do wat was asked, not cuz shes black. Then she goes and points fingers at her teacher...the whole racism thing seemed very forced, and while it is an issue that needs to have light shed on it, the way this show did it was at times very distasteful and took away from wat big of a problem racism actually is.

So I’m white af but I was also born with 3B hair and the only one in my entire family with curly hair. That meant I had a mom with straight hair taking care of my curly hair. People with straight hair just don’t understand just how different curly hair is. You can’t treat it like straight hair. A lot of times with people like me who have parents with straight hair you grow up with a shit ton of hair damage just because of the lack of knowledge over how it’s supposed to be cared for.

In my opinion Ginny and Georgia just feels like another straight people, white washed, Riverdale-esc show. It’s somewhat annoying and panders to a certain audience that just screams basic and flavorless, and in a certain way it’s insensitive to not only the topic of racism and being biracial, but teenage sexuality and pregnancy. It kinda plays out like a poorly written Wattpad fan fiction and I honestly couldn’t stand it. However, I will say that the plot itself wasn’t so bad, it was just poorly executed and written. Personally wasn’t my favorite, and I genuinely feel as though the people behind the show could of done so much more storytelling wise and character wise (mainly with Ginny).

*This comment might be long cause I needa to rant* BUT I don’t understand all the hype around Max at all she was the WORST character in my opinion. At least Ginny is struggling, Abby has body image issues, Hunter has a self-identity crisis, etc. Anyways my point is with all the other characters you can offer an explanation as to why they’re the way they are. Max literally has NO reason for her to be that selfish and entitled. All her problems are so first world and surface level yet she always thinks she deserves the most attention. She really got mad at Ginny, Abby, and Marcus in the season finale when they treated her WAY better than she’s EVER treated them. Like remember how Marcus was so caring to her when she was drunk yet she through him right under the bus when she told Ellen about him and Ginny or said nothing when he got punched by Hunter when he had a CONCUSSION? Idk there’s just so many other examples of her being incredibly self-involved that I don’t feel like listing . Overall she’s such a HORRIBLE friend and sister yet everyone gives her a pass and have no problems slandering the others like Ginny.

Personally, I only watched the few episodes of the show that I did for Georgia, and I think she is by far the best character. However, Ginny totally ruined the show for me, so I'm going to vent about how much I dislike her. BTW, I am not trying to send hate to Antonia Gentry, and I totally understand if you disagree with me; this is just my opinion.
1. She's so self centered. She constantly puts herself before everyone else and thinks everything revolves around her. The first episode I saw of Ginny and Georgia was the one with the "Oppression Olympics", and even though the said "Oppression Olympics" was the worst part of it by far, the way she treated Abby, who was going through her parents divorcing, cemented my hatred of her. Abby is literally falling apart and desperate for support from her vacant friends, and this girl has the nerve to say "Not everything is always about you" and call her a b**? What the hell?
2. She constantly disrespects her mom. Is Georgia always perfect? No, but she went through SO MUCH for her daughter and did so much to make her have a better life. She deserves so much respect, but no. She gets endless disrespect from Ginny, constant rants about how she's the "worst mom ever", and being told by her daughter "You just don't get it!" 500 billion times. JUSTICE FOR GEORGIA.
3. She exudes so much TikTok "main character energy" that it makes me itch. From the way she preforms her slam poetry to how she acts at the concert, it's just SO CRINGY and I hate it. However, I don't think the actress is bad at all, I really just think it's the character and the writing.
I think your opinions are valid. I would like to add though, that way before Abby was dealing with her parents divorce, both she and Norah were pretty mean to Ginny. One of the first things they did was take her to a store to steal (something you could tell they did on the regular) and when Georgia showed up, they blamed it on Ginny saying they had no idea she would steal and that it was her that put them up to it. So the “friendship” started off rocky. Wasn’t all Ginny. But I definitely understand where you’re coming from.
I do agree that the way she talked to Abby was like WTH? (she seriously made it about herself and just dismissed the idea of someone else having issues) and her endless disrespect for her mother despite her mom breaking her back to give her a good life made me foam at the mouth at times. Georgia went through SO MUCH yet Ginny gave her so much crap that I was thrilled every time she got slapped. I seriously hope she gets slapped ONE MORE time in the show and called out for her crap.

You lost me on Abby. She's not warranting any sympathies from the friends or the audience. True, she's dealing with parents divorce, but it's not like her fiends knew about it and ignored her. Also, she's perceived as the most woke of them all, yet chooses to act out. Separate that which you are allowed to see from the what is revealed to the characters. We see Abby's issues like we see Georgia's baggage, but they are not revealed to the others. Remain in the frame.

Ok but.. what bad decisions did Ginny actually ever make? I mean besides stealing and somewhat cheating? yeah she can be a handful but still she isn't all that horrible people make her seem. she's literally just a teenager.
i feel like a really fundamental problem of the show is that, well, many of the characters (especially the teens) have HUGE flaws, that aren't acknowledged at all! don't get me wrong, they shouldn't be perfect people by any means, but those flaws are completely ignored, often even the show treats the behavior caused by them as ok.
for example - Max flipping out at Ginny for sleeping with her brother, and Abby for not telling her. like i get that she's upset that her friend wasn't being honest with her but she was acting like she was brutally personally attacked, showing that she shares a flaw with ginny - making everything about herself.
when the group pretty much ghosted Abby when she needed them the most, after she opened up about her struggles ginny accused her of being egocentric, instead of accepting that everyone has their own problems, and that she can't feel betrayed like abby does, because she didn't even reach out to anyone for help.
Abby and Norah are more in the background, but I liked them very much. all of their flaws seem like they're added on purpose and the creators of the show are aware of them.
apart from being kinda cringe hunter is meh, but some of the things he says during his argument with ginny are really disgusting and i can't look at him the same way after that.
Marcus is really edgy, which i personally find annoying, but it's not like that's objectively bad. also as many people have already said, if he wasn't attractive his behavior would be considered creepy. I also felt like making him have a friend who dies of cancer (who isnt even named or acknowledged by anyone apart from Marcus) and have a car accident were supposed to artificially make people feel sympathetic towards him, and I didn't like that cuz it felt kinda forced.
in the end i think that the storylines of the adults were much more interesting than the teens, but the latter stories aren't complete garbage, they're just kinda mediocre
I think that’s pretty valid. Georgia’s storyline was the best of the show. As far as the teens, Max definitely overreacted about Ginny and Marcus. It just wasn’t that deep.
Abby and Norah were terrible friends and a bit of a cliche but as far as their personal issues, I think the writers did a good job with the direction they are going in with them.
Hunters character definitely could’ve been written better. He was a bit one dimensional.
But as for Marcus, I actually think he had no edge. The “edge” was forced. Nothing about him was mysterious or dangerous or anything that qualifies. But I could just be missing it. Lol
Max wasn't upset ginny slept with her brother,max was upset that ginny made a whole night of them losing their virginities together(which was a big deal for her) when ginny had already lost hers way before that and didn't tell max. At least from what i remember.

**SPOILERS** I watched this show a while back, and it was one of the better drama/coming of age shows I've watched. It had decent writing and it was entertaining enough to binge through fairly quick. The only real thing I wasn't fond of was how they wrote Ginny. My take on her was at first she was the new girl, shy and just feeling out her new town while trying to not get too attached since she may move away soon. But when she cheated on Hunter with Marcus and got caught she was upset at those who caught her not at her actions. She became a sort of self-centered person, maybe it was because of her bad choice in friends or her bad surroundings. She got upset with Max when Max figured out she was hooking up with her brother when it was her fault for not telling Max! And also closer to the end of the season Ginny started to be a bad friend and more focused on her guys (plural) than her best friend. This was when Max had just been broken up with by her gf, Ginny decides to go and make out with her brother as Max is upset. So yeah, Ginny was a complex character who I wanted to root for. Intentional or not, she went from nice to self-centered real quick.

Ginny is a huge part of the problem of the show. I don't know how you see it as a better show when the main protagonist is so poorly written and clearly dissected ad nauseum.
I actually like Bracia and I feel like Ginny did her really dirty. She blew her off and wouldn't give her the time of day until her other friends didn't want anything to do with her. I would have given her the same energy back, but Bracia was cool and supported her while everyone else shunned her.

Girl I hated the way Ginny's character was towards her mom and the decision she made at the end like I thought it was so irrational and irresponsible. I liked the show and Georgia was my favorite too for sure, and I didn't think it was fair the way Ginny chose to see her and treat her like she did something so horrible when she was doing it all for her kids
I actually can relate to Ginny about her relationship with her mother. I think a lot of people can’t really understand how is it truly feels like. It’s not that cool having a mom who act like “I’m a cool mother” Switching so fast a partner and watching how she cheats on her partner is really uncomfortable and can give a lot of trauma that can affect your life in the future. I noticed it after therapy that a lot of “small things” change your view on life. In the show you can see that she is doing very similar things as her mother as cheating, having sex with people she shouldn’t because they have a partner. Her mother does a lot of things for her but I think Ginnie needs more of emotional support because we see often how she acts towards her mother when she gives her that. Ginny is actually really alone with HER problems like struggling with depression, love life and having friends. I was molested too by my stepfather but I lived with him for a very long time and after this my whole life changed and my mother’s too.
I don’t really like Ginny and I love how her mother’s character is written. But I really can understand why Ginny is ungrateful. I need to add that it’s hard to trust to a person who hides something and I was so angry at my mother when I find out that she started dating someone when she still didn’t finished things with my stepfather.
Also I need too add that how Ginny look at racism is annoying as hell but I think that is necessary to show later her character development. Blaming others is kind of running away from your problems and I think it’s why she does that even without knowing.

Can we please talk about the Georgia, Paul, Zion love triangle😭? (Ik that Joe likes Georgia and he is great BUT he kinda doesn't count) Despite being bi-racial, myself and understanding identity and that whole bi-racial struggle, I couldn't emotionally relate to almost anything but the episode when Zion tried to make things work with Georgia and then Paul "proposing". I think I liked that part of the show the best. Zion is Ginny's father, he loves her and her mom(and Austin), he's an adult now he wants to shed his old history and have a future w his family but that gets murdered 😭 bc Georgia is in a happy relationship w a good guy. The only part that made me feel something throughout this entire show. I think that's just such an underrated part of the show and mirrors what a lot of people go through. U don't want to let go of someone bc of history, memories, and them being a "safe space" but what about the future? Will u go back to that toxic relationship or stay in a healthy one? I love that so much!
It’s definitely a great part of the story that people can relate to! It’s like on paper the mayor looked like the perfect candidate for her (no pun intended lol). And Zion was a reminder of her past life but also one of the best parts of it since she experienced so much trauma. I also think Joe is such a nice guy and they would make a great pair. It’ll be interesting to see how he expresses himself in the next season with her being engaged and all. But I agree with you. I think we’ve all faced a situation like that to a certain level lol.

I also think that your answer shows your self-confidence. Unfortunately, many people who keep themselves in a box don’t have that level of confidence and subsequently find themselves in Ginny’s position. Like all the side remarks from her friends about finding the right shade of makeup, or her hair getting puffy when she was getting her hair combed. None of that would’ve bothered her had she had confidence in herself. The world would be a much better place if it weren’t so black and white.

I think Ginny actually not making as big of an effort to socialise with the other black kids at her school makes a lot of sense. Being bi-racial myself and growing up in an all white neighbourhood, going to an all white school, being around predominantly white family members is pretty much all I knew. She probably felt too awkward to really try, she seems to lack in the cultural understanding of the black experience. Albeit, I hate that the show low-key made it look like the other black character was being kind of purposely isolating after the Britney thing, like no one would have that reaction lol. Also, I don’t know if this is a reach but, I felt uncomfortable when Georgia called the police on her black daughter. Now Ginny is bi-racial, yes, but she is very evidently black presenting and still a poc. I don’t think Georgia meant any genuine harm and was trying to teach her snarky daughter a lesson, but it just sort of reinstated this power and dominance that white parents can have over their black children, it’s quite unfortunate but I’ve heard a lot of stories of similar situations. I can only imagine how terrifying it must be to have to live with a violently racist parent (not referring to our Queen Georgia) and be hyper aware of how they’ll next punish you for something you do wrong.
Valid points. Though I only viewed Georgia calling the police as her just being a parent teaching a lesson. The reason being is because I didn’t see micro-aggressions in her that would suggest otherwise. But like you said, unfortunately there are situations with white parents with black kids where you never know where it’s leading to.

I totally agree, I’m also bi-racial and I’ve always was teased even by some of my African American friends about how “unblack” I was because I was part Asian but the Asian kids would never look my way. I think as bi racial kids were always having the bi part throw at us that we don’t know which group we belong to, and if we do find a group the other side has to be thrown away in an effort to fit in.

I feel like the rising popularity of social movements has writers feeling like they can slap a social problem on a show or movie and have it be successful. Which is really frustrating because a lot of these topics actually have more depth and complexity than most when you explore them.

Read the room, literally, Ginny just finished twerking in front of a room full of white people. The black girl is not really checking her for her costume but how playing both sides can be damaging.
As a black woman that dance scene made me super uncomfortable because of hyper-sexualization (at some point there’s also a really awkward racial comment by some dude bro about Ginny’s ass). When I was Ginny’s age I did dumb stuff like that with my majority white friends without thinking of how black bodies have been put on display for entertainment and profit throughout history. Ginny didn’t get that she was playing out a minstrel fantasy for those kids at a deeper level. I’m sure other black people have gotten comments about how they’re supposed to be good dancers etc in their lives.

I understand your point and I do think it has to do with the context but I also think that maybe that scene was trying to show exactly what you're talking about, just her doing dumb sh*t and not knowing how to act feeling like she doesn't fit in with white people or with black people. As a biracial women, some of these experiences feel familiar to me. Not to say there are the representation of racism for all people of color, but particularly for biracial people, who can “walk the line” with our skin color, it is hard to know when something is racial motived towards us or just something we feel in our heads. Maybe that is exactly how the situation would have gone for a light skinned girl versus a complete different outcome for a dark skinned girl. And it is important to point out that in these situations, the lightness or darkness of our melanin determines how heavy our profiling will be.That is what makes colorism run deep inside and outside the black community.

I also loved this show, and so did my friend, which is unfortunate, but I’ll get to that. So something that has really deeply upset me is the way they presented self harm. I wouldn’t say it glorifies it, but there was a failure to present the idea that there are healthier coping mechanisms. But no, Ginny just continued. And it was brushed over so much. See going back to my friend, she watched this series a few weeks before I did, and while she was watching it she was obsessed and told me to watch. I didn’t have time yet so I put off. Anyway she was also dealing with a lot of issues at home at that time. Then found out she had been self harming. We supported her, and helped her see different ways to cope, and thankfully she hasn’t done it since. But then a little while after that happened, I watched this show. As I watched the show, it didn’t click straight away, but after I finished it I was thinking about, like I said before, I don’t like how they presented self harm, and then it hit me that my friend had seen this and it planted the idea in her head, rather than educate her of the better, less harmful ways of coping. I can see now that my friend, and potentially many other young girl, had seen this act of self harm, she subconsciously romanticised it, believed she was a lost, rogue, misunderstood girl too, and this was how to deal with it. You can say that’s naive, but when you’re mentally fragile (like a lot of people at present), these things can have a huge impact.

I definitely think that part of the story was underdeveloped. And I told someone else, I think since Netflix didn’t know at first that there would be a second season, they should’ve shown a resolution for her. I know a lot of people deal with that and it would’ve helped.
Sometimes I think that a lot of people didn’t like The show because we’re not used to seeing so many characters with different layers, specially people of color. I think we cringe at seeing people of color make mistakes or simply behaving in a way they are not expected. That said, as a filmmaker I understand the choices they made with each scene and character. About the Taylor Swift line, as I said, we are not used to seeing a tv show where we need to think. This line was a choice for this character for a reason, and I think in that case it was to make a point: This character IS talking shit. That is a shitty argument to make. They chose a “wrong joke” or line on purpose to show how this character is not thinking straight. Not because they thought it was appropriate, just the opondo-te, because it’s what the character would say in real life.

I agree cuz everyone in these comments is so upset but all these imperfects made the series good. This rlly did portray real life. People can be selfish, mean, lack understanding, and impulsive, and they showed that. And everyone keeps questioning why Ginny would say one thing and then do another, but that’s life. A lot of people make mistakes like that. And this movie is through the perspective of ONE girl. Everyone is dissing her for how she thinks and to be more like the other characters but like thats how she is and I like how she’s not basic. Ofc it’s annoying at times but that’s how life is.
