Super helpful and a good foundation for Live 12s new and improved browser. Thank you. It is great to see them making some solid investments in this part of the system. As our media libraries continue to grow, organizing, searching and tagging becomes even more important. Would love to see a comprehensive Ableton File Type and Icon document, infographic, or video. If you ever come across one, I'm pretty sure others would benefit from it.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it's still a useful video for Live 12's browser. :) That's actually a great idea for a document to put together, I think I might do that!
Great video mate. I just purchased AL Standard after a 30 day trial. You teach lots of go stuff in short concise videos. I'll be watching more of your videos for sure. Will buy you a coffee on payday. Cheers!
Great explanation on the Live 11 Browser. I just saw your thoughts on the Live 12 Browser and completely agree and added a few thoughts. The Filters concept is nice but I really miss some of the organization folders. Thanks for making your suggestion. I hope it gets implemented!!
Thanks Brian! Yeah the new filters system isn't really working well for me, and it looks like it's not working well for others either. Let's hope it happens!
ive seen a fellow aussie that has his entire sets (or maybe projects) loaded into his browser. He can go back through old tracks/projects and grab samples out of them (like a snare, or a resampled bass he's made). I've yet to wrap my head around this concept, and fear slowing down my cpu by having multiple sets loaded into my browser. Perhaps this could be a future video for you to explore. I could definitely benefit from this workflow!
Definitely a way to do it! It can slow down the browser quite a bit if you have too much loaded in it, but it's totally possible. I'll have a video out in a little bit that goes through using templates that utilises the same concepts as having sets loaded in the browser!
I hate the browser with its folder heirachy. Way too much digging through folders when all I want to do is browse a specific file type. For eg. Browse all .wav files within a places folder that are not in Lives actual library. I believe Live scans these files within all of its folders, but it cannot show just the files outside of their residing folders. Live needs to show results like Windows Explorer does in its search bar. All the .wav files only.
If you add the 'type' tag to the columns when searching, you can organise all of the files by .wav, but yeah in any of the 'places' there will still be a folder hierarchy. I don't mind it too much to be honest, but I have organised all of my folders and files pretty meticulously to make it super easy to navigate!
One thing I've REALLY gotten into is the "collection" (well, really everything but I wanted to address this). However, now that it's a nearly hourly use, I'm really wanting more. 10 or even an even dozen would be great. I guess there is a M4L way around this but M4L is generally cumbersome to me. You're plugged in with the ABE's, maybe put in a good word? :D
I've never found myself using that many collections before, so I'm curious to know how you're using them? I often find that the most efficient method for finding things is the search feature, and when it comes to samples I just have custom folders rather than use collections. If I ever get the chance to put it forward as a suggestion I will. :)
a problem I'm having (Live 10) is when previewing a midi file from the browser window I have to press "click to preview" rather than just pressing the on the clip and it automatically playing. Is there a setting i can change to where it auto plays, or do I have to "click to preview" every Midi file when auditioning?
I have to use Live for a few projects and it feels soooo... archaic. Watched this hoping for answers, good vid - hank you, but no answers ;) How is it possible in 2023 that if I type in "hat" in search it cannot find any files called hihat... Feels like windows XP ;) Tragically ancient.
I actually find the browser pretty good, but I have spent a lot of time organising sample packs and stuff outside of the program and only use the search feature for plugins. But I totally understand it's not at the same level as other DAWs in terms of tagging and filtering!
Finally someone actually explained this! Thanks
Really good videos and style Matt. Good work.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching. :)

You’re welcome! 😊

So glad you found the video useful! Thanks for watching. :)
Thanks I’ve been searching for the meaning of icons in Ableton Files. You seem to be the only person with this information.
You're welcome! Glad to be able to help out. :)
Thank you for your instructive and open ended tutorials!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching! :)

Thank you so much for the Super Thanks! :D
EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Where is the "Buy Me A Coffee" button above?
You're welcome! :D
You can find the Buy Me A Coffee link in the video description. :)
Another great vid. Honestly, when they are this good, who needs something like groove 3 (which is ok, but some of those dudes don't stay focused ;) )
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. :)

For MIDI files you unfortunately have to click the 'click to preview' every time, there is no way to automatically preview them as far as I'm aware.
@matttinklermusic ah damn. That's too bad and very inconvenient, and time consuming. I appreciate the response!
