  • In this video I will replace just the USB-C charge port on an iPad Air 4th generation. This is preferable to replacing the entire flex cable as it does not require completely removing the logic board.

I don't trust my solder skills to drop this on there lol rather do the whole flex and suffer through the disassembly.

That's not a terrible option. They just made it such a pain to pull the board on this model and some of the Pros.

Wouldn't a silicon shield be more safe as a piece of wood shield could catch fire with the hot air gun? Also is the plastic inside the replacement USB-C port more heat resistant than the original one?

Good questions! It would take quite a lot of time and direct heat for hot air to ignite a piece of wood so we are pretty safe there. The problem with silicone is that it tends to warp which would lift the flex cable out of focus from my scope. As far as the plastic goes, it’s a matter of focusing the heat on the soldered area and not keeping it on long enough to melt the plastic which could happen after a while. The metal backing blocks some of the air flow too so that helps.
