  • Eric has become a well known fig grower on the OurFigs forum. In a very short amount of time Eric has tried over 1000 varieties of figs and has realized the amazing diversity within Ficus Carica. Eric also practiced as a Chiropractor for many years before starting a chocolate company where he pioneered new ideas in the world of chocolate. He then moved onto figs and was able to share with us some of his passion for growing figs. We went quite in depth on particular topics that fig growers often go back and forth on (the nuance of growing figs) and got his perspective on what it's like growing figs in Santa Barbara, California.

Caprified might be much better than non-caprified, but I'm pretty sure that non-caprified is better than the grocery store or Costco.

26:34 water effect is when the fruits start to swell. This has been my experience with all vegetables and fruits as a gardener for the past 25 years.

Soo exciting all the breeding potentials!

the persistend caprifigs are used in breeding because they have a bigger chance to produce female offsprings that are common. non persistend caprifigs also produce pollen, but the female offsprings are either all smyrna or the majority is smyrna...so the reason for useing persistand ones is the self fertile offsprings.

I think the community has to be careful about giving advice to resteict water. In June and July you should actually give lots of water. Firstly because 90+ weather is stressful and being in pots thats a double damage. You can easily stunt your tree by not giving it water. It wont be a healthy tree. There is no downside to giving water during this time because your figs arent near to ripening either. Then, later in late August and afterwards when figs atart ripening, you can withhold water as the temperatures cool down.

I completely agree. Water restriction is only done when they are starting to ripen and it is also very climate dependent. In Santa Barbara, our average summer highs are low to mid 70's. If it was hotter, I would have to do things very different.
