Chosen Axemen is my favourite unit in the game. They punch so far above their weight class it’s absurd. Of course, they’re the glass-iest of glass cannons and take massive casualties from the lowest of slingers, but even with a super weakness to missiles they can beat an early legionary first cohort (50% more javelins). Hail Chosen Axemen!
Holy crap! I didn’t think they could beat a Praetorian cohort without a snow bonus! Should have waited for that point in the video I suppose. Oh well, it’s just another reason to say… Hail Chosen Axemen!
I think if the Romans stay stationary and throw their pila, they might do better. But no, this isn't unexpected. Surprised the urbans broke them with pila; in previous tests, we've seen chosen axemen seriously mess up urbans.
Thanks for the comment. Agreed that remaining stationary would benefit the Romans. Though, imo it would give abit too much of an advantage for Romans :)
Thanks for the comment. I doubt it. Here is a vid where it was tested whether it is better to throw pila or engage in melee straight away :) ruclips.net/video/sgS30U1-cCE/видео.html
Unexpectedly effective. Experiment idea - are more experienced scythed chariots less likely to run amuck? no xp, 3 bronze, three silver, three gold. 4 of each, and have a bunch of archers shooting flaming arrows.
Ah,german infantry, avoid a direct confrontation at all costs, keep distance and let the skirmishers do the work, they better be protected cause the germans get nasty cavalry, lose them and its over. That urban cohort fight is a 50/50, very rng based on pila.
Urban are no joke…..they are top 3 infantry spartans first after maybe royal pikemen bull warriors and urbans……also sacred band are top 5 maybe but royal pikemen with long pikes can be very strong with strategy even better then sometimes spartans 😊😊
I knew it! I love chosen axemen, they´re so much fun in siege battles with wooden walls 2vs2. Used as defense where you then decide to go for the counter attack and crush the opponents with some extra fear factors like beserkers + screeching women. I knew the praetorians were toast. Chosen axes value wise may be the most most valueable unit in the game aside from like archers/HA, they´re so cheap and g/g upgrades makes them so good vs armoured romans. Their excellent morale also really helps them stay in the fight.
These and falx have a weird way of punching above their weight. Keep them safe from missiles and they both are the most insane shock infantry aside from berserkers. Im pretty sure 2 hand weapons in this game proc their attacks at twice the rate of 1 hand weapons...
When I saw them beat the Legionary Cohort, I thought, "Picking the Praetorians probably wasn't a good idea." Looking the Barracks page of RTW Heaven, Chosen Axemen can be attained at Tier 3 barracks. The same tier the Romans get Princepes or Early Legionary Cohort with the Reforms. That they can cut through Praetorian Cohort makes them very cost effective shock troops. Before the Reforms, they'll cut through the entirety of the Roman infantry roster. Only with the Reforms do the Romans get to present Urban Cohort to stop them, but the AI will rarely field those by the time a German player gets to them. They'll likely be fielding Polybian troops still when they do encounter them. The issue I guess for the German player is getting fast growth settlements to get to that stage. A lot of those barbarian starting zones have poor growth in Central and Western Europe.
@@Warmaker01 The only reason to get Praetorians is because they don't need any level of barracks, as long as you have the Imperial Palace. Very efficient in the short term, just after you get the Marian Reforms, so you can mop out any immediate non-Roman threats. Before starting the Civil War, however, you should make sure that you have some Urbans on you.
To be honest, with Germania, you only need spear warband, done peltasts and light cavalry and you are set for the rest of the game. If you want to turtle and wait untill you have tear 3 barracks you can do that too
Ahhh I love seeing germania bringing these guys against my scythian horse lords and them dropping like flies, yet, for the sake of honour, that last match deserves a re-do. Not sure if they can beat one on one an urban cohort, but pretty sure they can do a lot better
Bro, it seems unrealistic to me that the Romans don't have time to throw their pila before the enemy attacks. Imagine this in real life, that the Romans would wait for the attack and only then throw their pila. I suggest giving them the opportunity to do it calmly once and only then the enemy troops would charge. What do you think?
Thanks for the comment. That would be one way to do the test. However, at least in this series, consistency requires the Romans walking towards the enemy :) But yea, that would certainly benefit the Romans.
Wow... The entire Roman roaster got ROASTED, the First Cohort barely won... And then we have the Urbans sending those kids home in less than 10 seconds.

Knew they would toast the praetorians. Good attack + warcry + armor penetration + excellent morale does amazingly if used correctly in battles.
Thanks for the comment. Agreed on that. Thus, it was a bit surprising that the Urbans broke them so easily :)
The real protagonist in rome total war and ofc the urbans are the villain.
