My best friend of more than 30 years was a drummer, which left me a pretty good ear for it. What amazes me about Adam Rupp is not only how accurate his primary sounds are, but how perfectly he includes secondary sounds. Whether it's the lingering resonance of the kick and toms, the shimmer of a crash cymbal, the ring of a ride cymbal or the unique effect of an engaged snare. It's also noteworthy that he doesn't just mimic each piece of a full kit, but a full range of drumming techniques, including brushwork, rim shots, etc.. And to top it off, he holds an amazingly tight groove and plays in the manner of an instrumental drummer, not using the freedom of the vocals to go beyond what a drummer can do with four limbs. Of course, that's not to mention the wealth of extended sounds he produces with the same attention to detail.

“Listen to the Music” is a great video where they absolutely sound like a full band. I especially love “Crazy” and “Blue ain’t your Color”! For fun, “The Butt’s Remix” and “Life is a Highway”. They also have original songs, too. Some of those are “Playing with Fire”, “Understand”, and “Snow Globe”. Some songs just give you chills with their harmonies like “Winter Song” and “”Helplessly Hoping”! Enjoy going down this rabbit hole!

Yup, I think 'Listen to the Music' is their best cover. Thinking that their best double mix is 'Boondocks and Fishing' although 'Butts' followed by 'Nessun Dorma' is a trip for most of us to enjoy. Love your picks. I would add nearly the entire 'Dive Bar Saints' album for originals.

This is one of the most popular Home Free songs. It was the first song I ever heard from Home Free & I was instantly hooked. It really showcases the talent of these 5 men (their tight harmonies, Tim Foust's bass & Adam Rupp's incredible beatboxing). They are my favorite a cappella group. This song is very old (about 100 yrs.) & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

    • @uosuaq
      @uosuaq 5 месяцев назад +3

It's the perfect intro song, but while it showcases their talent, no one here is really showing off what they can do. You may not have noticed Tim dropping an octave for "while he is sleeping in his grave", but...he's literally known for blowing out soundsystems at professional venues. And Adam Rupp...well, search for "Adam Rupp drum solo" and prepare to have your brain laid to waste. My favorite line about him is "people say his beatboxing is super impressive, but apparently it's just considered normal...on his home planet".

Oh they’re remarkable. Adam the beatboxer is called a Freak of nature by the guys. He was doing the drums, harmonica and other sounds and Chance (back left) was doing the “mouth harp” sound. Tim, the bass, has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and then sing up with the tenors. Austin (lead here) can also do a harmonica and when live he’ll join Adam and both will do it. Adam uses a looper when live and record sounds with his voice and then add to it. Check out Adam Rupp Drum Solo (2015) to see just him and a microphone doing drums. Amazing! Try Helplessly Hoping, I Can’t Outrun You, In the Blood, Christmas in LA (to hear Adam go crazy with the beatboxing). Love Home Free!😍

How about a Sea Shanty double reaction?
    Do the live version last.
The one that doesn’t say live is the “studio” version. It was recorded during Covid lockdown so the guys recorded the audio individually in their closets and sent the recordings to their producer. The video is filmed by family members in or around their individual homes.
While many artists moaned about not being able to make a living because they couldn’t do their jobs, Home Free found a way and were very productive during lockdown releasing a new video every 2 weeks

I forgot to mention that one of my favorites for showcasing Adam, the beatboxer, is "Crazy" (which was originally sung many years ago by Patsy Cline and was written by Willy Nelson) Not many people mention it as a showcase for Adam because what he does is simple and subtle. Adam is the beatboxer..he does the “nomonica” and any drum kit sounds. Rob in the overalls is doing the “dom dom do” on a looper, and Chance in the back doing the mouth harp sound on looper through the whole song. He’s the last guy you see in the video. Tim is the deep bass singer and Austin is the lead high tenor. These guys really know how to put a song together. They switch lead singer around to all the guys except the beatboxer. He prefers to do the beatboxing rather than sing lead even tho he has a beautiful voice. The looper helps them record their voices doing repetitive sounds and that frees them up to do some other singing or sounds. These are then layered over the singers voices. So, so, good!

Home Free is incredible. Everything they do is great. And although they are a Country A-cappela group, they can really sing all genres. They really all have great voices with their own specialties. Even Adam Rupp who started the group with his brother Chris Rupp. Chris left the group in 2016 to go solo but also to start other projects with his sister, among others.
Adam Rupp-Beatboxer but is actually an inhuman freaking good mouth artist.
Tim Foust- Deep bass but also as a tenor and everything in between is possible.
Austin Brown-High tenor with his great runs and high notes.
Rob Lundquist (beard and glasses)-Tenor, with a voice like velvet and so much soul.
Adam Chance (back left, who is called Chance) - Baritone/ Bass, a voice so smooth and sexy. And who here also makes the Jaw harp sound.
There is no permanent lead singer in Home Free. They look at every song whose voice suits it best, the best harmony, no egos, no rivalries, great personalities etc. Besides, they can all beatbox (see their live performance 9to5). ..
This is one of the many covers they do in addition to various originals, and each one is just amazing.

They are entirely independent and do all the arranging, videography, direction, lighting, costumes, editing, and so forth on their own and only contract out for any specialty makeup, steady cam work for the most part. The video notes always give the credit to who did what so always check those out either before or after the reaction. For a ballad you should check out I Can't Make You Love Me originally by Bonnie Raite or classic rock cover of Dream On originally by Aerosmith. For an example of the theater aspect you should check out any of their Disney covers or My Mother Told Me. For a professionally recorded live video you should check out Roadtrip on their channel. it is unique and highlights both their skill and their sense of humor. They also did a colab with Home Free because they are friends. You should also check out the cover of Man of Constant Sorrow by Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer of Voiceplay. During Covid he started a solo channel where he uses some minor instrumentation and does all the parts.

People compare the three acapella groups, Home Free, Voiceplay, and Pentatonix, to high school cliques. Pentatonix are the popular cool kids. Voiceplay are the theatre kids. Home Free are the fun kids tailgating in the parking lot.
All three groups are alumni of the acapella competition show The Sing-Off. Pentatonix won season three of the show. Voiceplay and Home Free were on the show in its fourth season. Home Free won the fourth season.
Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix is featured on Home Free's video Ring of Fire. Voiceplay and Home Free did a video together after The Sing-Off called Zombies vs Hillbillies. Voiceplay and Home Free had become friends during The Sing-Off competition. Lance Stein arranged Home Free's Buttz Remix. Geoff Castelucci did the arrangement of Elvira in their video with the original singers of the song, The Oak Ridge Boys.
The acapella world is small. Performers know each other to a large degree. The performers generally help each other even in competitions. In acapella groups, there are usually no large egos in that they depend on each other to perform.

New sub for more of this amazing ride with Home Free. I would watch both versions of "Sea Shanty Medley" but start with the "Live". Honestly no matter which song/video you react to from these guys will be great. Everything they do is done to perfection. My favorite band by far. Keep up the great reactions!

The original song was published in 1913 and later covered by Bob Dylan & Joan Baez among others. As always, the singing, harmonies & beatboxing are terrific. In recent live videos Austin (lead on this) plays "no-monica" with Adam (beatboxer) - in harmony! They all can beatbox to an extent (see "9-5 beatboxing breakdown" and an old video "Joy to the World Hosannah"). Dive down the rabbit hole - it's a great trip!

No, actually it's Chance doing the mouth-juice harp so prominently at the beginning and end. He is the one in back with the black vest, they even show him doing it for a few seconds towards the end. I even saw a live video where 4 of them break into 2 teams and battle.

The Sea Shanty Medley with 38M views, and looks like TicTok with pirates, was recorded and filmed at their individual homes during Lockdown. But the tracks were professionally mixed and mastered.
The LIVE version was filmed at a real HomeFree concert about a year ago, but just put on YT in September.
In the live version you can see Adam put some fist thumbs into the looper and punchup the BPM between songs, so he can do other perc during the song.

You should know that Austin does guitar and banjo sounds in different videos. Banjo in "Try Everything" and you can actually see him do guitar sounds on "Children, go where I send thee" with Kenny Rogers.

The earlier Sea Shanty Medley with millions of views was done during lockdown. Sea shanties were very popular then, on TikTok and RUclips. Chance who loves sea shanties persuaded the guys to do the sea shanty medley. The medley became viral, especially in Asia. People were using it for dance challenges on TikTok.
The guys did the first video remotely from their homes. Adam and Rob live in Minnesota. Chance lives in California. Tim and Austin live in Nashville. They set up mini recording studios with the advice of their producer Darren Rust. Darren suggested a particular mike that has different types of mike sounds programmed in it. Tim says the recording at home is similar to recording at a studio since one doesn't see the producer during the session. Darren produced the video remotely.
The other Sea Shanty Medley is a live performance. The audience is huge and enthusiastic. The guys sound the same live as they do in the original video if not better.
You might be interested in their original Skull and Bones sea shanty. Due to their original Sea Shanty Medley going viral, Ubisoft approached them to write a sea shanty for their soon-to-be-released pirate game Skull and Bones.. Chance wrote the sea shanty. It has instrumentation.
There are two versions of the song. One is a live performance at a gaming conference where Home Free did an abbreviated version. Also, there are some live performances almost impromptu of the song during their recent tour in Europe. Chance plays the guitar and Austin the mandolin. The other video of the song is the complete version with subtitles and video clips of the game. It's an outstanding song.

If you want to see a terrific, professionally filmed live performance, go with the Sea Shanty Live. It will give you a good idea what their live shows are like. If you want to see a fun and creative video filmed during covid for a song recorded during covid (meaning the guys were not together and did their parts from home) then that would be the other one. Both are worth seeing. Their covid videos are some of the best out there from that time as they got very creative with their videos and kept up with their policy of putting out a video twice a month. Seriously though...you could in all reality watch the official videos from Home Free then look for a live performance of that same song put up by one of us Home Fries to do a a comparison.

You could do both as a double feature. The earlier one was filmed during lockdown when the guys couldn't get together, so they filmed their own parts in their homes and sent the bits to their editor to be mushed together into one great video.
The live version is a performance professionally videoed within the last year at a live performance.

Actually, the diggery-do is a specialty of Adam Chance, or just "Chance" (since there are two Adam's in the band). And they all can do an array of beatboxing, but Adam Rupp is their main beatboxer (he's the one doing the "nomonica"). As a Brit, I think you would like a cover from your countrymen, Dire Straits, that HF did to awesome effect..."Brothers in Arms." It also features a lot of their bass sounds.

For Home Free, you might check out “Brothers in Arms”. Be ready to cry.
Another artist to check out, is Peter Hollins. He is a friend of Home Free, Pentatonix, and a lot of other accapella groups. Geoff Castalucci from Voice Play did a lot of arrangements from Pentatonix, and Home Free. They are all a close nit family.
