Up here in NH, we have had a few frosts. Temps have dropped with highs only in the low 60s on the warm days, if that, and bees don't seem to cap anything at these temps. I pulled partial and uncapped honey frames. I was able to spin out the honey, the bees will clean the frames out when the temps warm a bit at the end of the week, and I can give the drawn comb back to the bees in the spring. My husband was just asking me yesterday about harvesting honey and what we have to do for the fall. This being our first year with a horizontal Hive I was telling him that I'm waiting for your video to come out so I know what I'm supposed to be doing... So your timing is perfect. @@SecureAcresNaturalBees One other question that may seem obvious, but I just want to be sure since this is our first time... We don't have straw but we have bales of hay. Will that be fine for winterizing them?
I do have two questions regarding the openings on Dr. Leo's hives... There are two openings, one at the bottom and one near the middle, both in the center of the box. I'm assuming that's where the brood would be, so my questions are: Do I close one of the slots and which one? And then the other question is..do we take frames from either end and leave them with the seven in the middle and just slide them over? Or how does that go? Thanks so much!
We also have a few of these hives with the centered entrances. For the entrances we generally only have the top one open when the hive is very busy. When it has slowed down or stopped for the winter the top entrance is shut. Handling the frames isn't different then the style of hive I showed in this video. When we catch a swarm we put them on one side of the hive as we normally do. The Bees will put their brood on these frames and when we add honey frames we just add on till we reach the other end of the hive. Haven't had much of an issue with eggs or anything on the honey frames I add even with the centered entrances. Hope that helps!

You're welcome! It's pretty easy, you aren't even disturbing the core frames so it doesn't take long. Excited to do the harvest next week.

I prefer to use straw because I don't think it gets as moldy but I have used hay before without too much issue.

about locating the brood nest or cluster, often you can feel the warmth of the bees with your hand on top of the frames.
