    I sure hope I am not the only one who did not realize that a "heat pump" was exactly the same as a normal AC condenser but with additional parts inside... If you remember the first time you heard the term "heat pump", do you recall what the first thing that came to your head was? I can't be the only one who did not imagine a condenser unit.. 😄
    True story:
    I, the greenhorn tech who did not go over heat pumps in school yet, was on a ride-along with a senior tech at my first HVAC job... After he and I looked at the furnace we went back to the van to order a part. As he was looking for the part, he realized he needed another model number so he asked me to go get him the model number of the heat pump. I said, "sure, no problem!" even though I had no idea what a heat pump was. I didn't want to look stupid - I am actively attending an HVAC school after all. So I go back to the furnace room because that's where we just were and I start looking for something that looks like a heat pump... After a few minutes, I was certain that it is not the water heater, there is no boiler, and there is nothing else that may be a heat pump.. I had a flip phone back then with no internet so I couldn't look it up either. I went back to the van and told him I couldn't find it. After a short pause, he gave me a confused look and then asked me if I tried looking on the other side of the house and pointed to where the "air conditioner" is. (I think he was simply trying to let me save face and pretended not to understand that I had no idea what a heat pump is). On that side of the house there was nothing else except the condenser unit so that was the day when I learned what a heat pump is. 😂 I gave him the model number off that condenser unit and nervously watched him type it in the laptop. To my relief, that was indeed the model number he needed. (I assumed that was a heat pump but I still wasn't 100% sure) 2 weeks later we went over heat pumps in school. 😑

      If you go ask a physics professor, they'll tell you: normal A/C is also a heat pump. Thermodynamically, a normal A/C unit moves heat from one place to another and is a heat pump but "air conditioning" is a colloquial phrase and has no scientific meaning. So, when these two-way systems came out, there wasn't a colloquial phrase that captured what the device is doing and they defaulted to the phrase used in thermodynamics courses everywhere. In both cases, thermodynamically, heat is being moved and, in both cases, a heat pump is what's moving the heat from one place to another. One system is just one-way and the other system is two-way but they're both heat pumps.

    This video made it clear that there are way more parts than just a reversing valves.

    Hello J, I come to your channel for a lot of advice and I'm back once again. This is my first year with a heat pump here in Missouri and I need some advice. This past week we've been in the teen's and 20's for high temps. I have my thermostat set at 70 but it's a cold 70. I've been told and you even mentioned in this video that I can set my thermostat to "EH" and bypass the heat pump. Doesn't that usually double your electric bill? As it is it seems run most of the time anyway. It'll run for 15-20 minutes then kick off but back on again in 10 minutes or less all day and night. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    Question about the wires going into the compressor on that unit. Usually I see 3 wires for the run, start, and common, but that looked like it had 4 or 5 besides the heater wires. what are the extra wires for?

    • @davenone7312
      @davenone7312 2 года назад

      There are a total of 5 wires going to the compressor. The bottom 2 black wires are for the heater. The other three (black,yellow,bluish) are the pump run start common. I think you are confusing the red into black wire splices for the heater wiring.

      @@davenone7312 i think there is 6. two blacks for heater. then a red black green and yellow. i’m trying to figure out what the green wire with yellow stripe is for going to the compressor

    So is it normal for heat pumps to run in emergency heat when it's really cold outside? Let's say when the temperature drops down to 20°F?

    Last night I noticed AUX on my thermostat. I think we got down to 40 maybe 35. It was blowing cool air. We turned off the thermostat, changed filters & turned the stat back on and it’s still been blowing cool air. I don’t know what else to check. I can’t afford someone to come out right now. 😬

    When you're buying a heat pump, does it come as both the inside and outside units? I'm looking them up but the pictures only show the outside unit.

      They should come as a set, evaporator coil and condenser coil.

    So a heat pumps gives you the option of running the air conditioner in the winter? Or you can heat ur house using a heat pump with out turning on the furnace? Sorry, still a bit confused

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV 2 года назад +2

      No problem Luis! I remember being baffled by heat pumps as well. 😅 Yes, the heat pump heats the house instead of a furnace. The only problem is that heat pumps start to struggle and then provide no heat at all as it gets colder outside. Generally people can use a heat pump to heat the house until it gets to about 30F outside. And then the back up heat source would need to be used instead. (either an electric or gas furnace) In summary, a regular air conditioner can only cool the house but a heat pump is capable of both, cooling and heating.

    I have an 18 month old American Standard heat pump with a natural gas furnace, known as dual fuel. Last year the heat pump switched off and started the gas furnace when the outside temperature was below 40 degrees. This year, even at 29 degrees, the heat pump keeps operating and holding set point. What is broken so that my heat pump no longer switches to operate the gas furnace based on outside temperature?

    • @jonwiersig5800

      I talked to Sensi customer service. It turns out that my new thermostat, the Sensi Smart (1F87U-42WF) has no heat pump lockout. Every time heat is called for, the system will always start the heat pump. If the heat pump does not achieve the set point within 30 minutes, then it will switch to the furnace. Thanks!
