when i worked in graphic design, myself and another guy from the studio had a joke where we would always hide comic sans in every file. We would just make one dot comic sans, or make it background color if it wasn't a text heavy file - it drove people crazy :D

Comparing myself to other artists kept me from creating for YEARS! Like seriously, 3 years. I used to work as a children's book illustrator and layout designer for a small publishing company that ran into big financial trouble and couldn't keep me on. So on top of the constant pressure to "draw it in this style", I also faced rejection and what I thought was failure. For me it was a huge blow, and it took me all that time to gain back the confidence to even attempt to create. Then one day a few months ago, I got really really sick of not believing in myself and my abilities and I started to work on things that brought me happiness. Happiness for me usually includes humor :) Has every project turned out exactly the way I wanted? No, lol. But, trusting in my abilities and my unique style again allows me to set aside comparison and embrace joyful creating. I'm working on opening my Etsy and accepting contract jobs again, slowly but surely.

I could say that I fit that description for a while, I’ve always worked another job to pay my student loans. 🤑 I think “just keep creating” or “just do it” is the best advice. I think it gives you permission to learn and make mistakes, while still holding you accountable to goals. Just reread: I mean the “collective you”, ya know, peoplekind and all that... and myself... blah smh 🤦♀️

I ADORE the whole “graphic design disaster” idea! It comes from such a genuine place too. It’s not you being pretentious or anything, you just genuinely don’t want to take yourself too seriously. I used to go along with the trendy hate for comic sans until I learned about how it's one of the best fonts for people with dyslexia and really helps them to read. It's recommended by the British Dyslexia Association, even. So while I still think it looks goofy, I can at least give it a pass now. Still no love for papyrus though EDIT: also, Spice is really adorable

I literally just bought the "Cries in Comic Sans" art print. Not sure how I'm JUST seeing this video. I cracked up when I saw that in your store...like, a good 20 minutes of straight laughing. I've been a graphic designer for many years and these designs are epic. I showed the print to my husband and I was trying to explain it to him while dying and he was looking at me like I had 3 heads...LOL! I was absolutely the same in uni but it was mainly because we didn’t have a proper graphic design teacher teaching us... fine artists & illustrators who hate graphic design make for horrendous teachers. After we complained we got a proper graphics tutor for the last year but it was too little too late by then. Bless her, she was a brilliant teacher conceptually but didn’t teach us the software coz she didn’t know how to use it 🤦🏻♀️ Since leaving I’ve come to realise not many degrees teach the software which is so ridiculous as it’s crucial to becoming a designer. And about the graphic design college I had the same feeling, I felt so down at some point that I ended up hating every design I made and very very depressed with life in general.
And its so sad cause in college everything is so competitive and full of vanity that art related courses turn out to be a pond of misery for all involved.
Of course thats my experience on this matter... but anyways i agree that things should be more fun and relaxed!
