  • In this video I break down why the CAD information that you have inserted into your Revit project does not cut or present properly in your Revit plans, elevations or sections. I also describe a solution that I have used in professional practice to resolve this which I then follow with some notes/caveats to be considered with my suggested approach. By the end of this tutorial you should be able to resolve any issues you have with CAD not cutting correctly in your Revit file.

    Hey Guys!
Just to note, you can obtain a similar presentation of your CAD data by placing the DWG into an In-Place-Mass or in-place-family directly within your Revit project. I feel this loses some of the control elements listed in my recorded solution but it might be a method for consideration if you are not expecting updates to the CAD data and only need the CAD data on a temporary basis.
    Cheers Guys, hope you enjoy!

Just an advice, one of well explained video. However it’s so protracted far from what you titled the video. It’s deep down in to the reasons and methods.
According to your explanation skills I appreciate how you could manage to create this video. But it would be great to create another shorter-on-pointed one that maybe attached a link for ‘their causes’ to this video. It’s 18mins long that even now I’m on the table for my launch whilst watching your video, I literally finished my launch at a half of this and still haven’t figured what should I do to fix when I went back to work.
A compacted one please, cause I really see your potential.

Hello, thanks a lot for this detailed video !
I tried your solution, it works well but I found another limit: the upper section cut is good but the lower section is still not working well. If I set my view range from 5m to 10m, I will actually see the the families from -infinity to 10m as long as they go though the 5-10m range.

Also for everyone watching, please go to the Autodesk Community forum, find topics related to this dwg issue and upvote them to add more pressure to Autodesk on solving them !
There is one called "Cut linked 3D DWGs" (I can't put the url since RUclips doesn't allow it).

I tried to use this method. But for one dwg it acts wierd. Sectioning works when I cut one part of the building (the short side). But when I rotate the section 90 degrees, it wont work anymore. It acts like it was a normal linked dwg. What is also wierd is that the section box in 3D do not work at all. Even if the entire dwg is outside the section box, I can still see it.
    Any ideas why this happens?

Hi Hampus, apologies I am only getting back to your comment now.
I do not have any valuable insight on the issue you described I am afraid. I would start by trying to ID the authoring tool of the original 3D CAD file to understand if it was a Solid modelling tool, ACIS Mesh etc as they may interface differently when exported into a dwg format.

Sadly, as you know, this is only an Elastoplast, this has been the case since.......roman times it seems. This is one thing I wish Autodesk would get the finger out and sort. Either that or make Collaboration files sectionable.

    • @8020BIM
      @8020BIM  3 года назад

Absolutely Colin. Getting very old at this point for sure. Wish they would also open up to external integration. The workflow from Solidworks through to Revit is intolerable and requires a separate Inventor license just to use the Autodesk Exchange App.

@@8020BIM Everything 3D Was the same issue, when you are talking the complexity of kilometres of Piping in a model, no way are you getting that baby out in IFC! Sectionable collaboration models would be a game changer. Haven't seen the stats for 2021 / 2022 Revit , hope they have attended to that!

loading the cad model as a family has one big disadvantage. it is not possible to update the family as it is with links. When trying to replace it, the family deletes all manual work, i.e. dimensions, descriptions related to the family. any solution to this problem?

Hi Dave, Sorry to hear you are having difficulties with this. Can I ask you to outline the steps you undertook and also what software the original 3D Cad was authored in (sometimes solid modelling vs ACIS mesh modelling can play a role in how the elements present in Revit)
