4:00 funny thing is, the AP bomb doesn't work as intended against actual ships, since for some reason Gaijoob didn't code the bombs to be able to piece anything. So, it's entirely useless for now.
Came here to say the same thing, glad there's at least one other player who knows this. I did some extensive testing years ago when I started playing Japanese aircraft and was pretty disgusted with the way Gaijin added them to the game completely broken and then couldn't be bothered to fix it in 10 years. Inexcusable, especially after they added naval to the game.
8:13 They have a low velocity if you use any belt that isn't the tracers. For some reason, those have an insane muzzle velocity of 920 m/s and they also hit harder and more consistently than most. Lovely work otherwise Tim!
Yeah i was very confused when he said that. I suppose if people are just starting to grind the aircraft they will notice the stock guns and belts are slow and inconsistent...but anyone this far into the japanese tree will know those 30mm tracers are super high velocity, super accurate, and absolutely hit like missiles.
the tracers surprisingly can kill bmps and other ifvs either hitting the atgm or hullbreak and yeah confused when he said the gun was hard to use when infact i get alot of 1km kills in the thing than any gun including the Vulcan
I got these when they were at 7.0 with air spawn. They were pretty good. Then Gaijin did what you don't do. Double nerf. Removed the air spawn AND increased the BR. Now at 8.0 they are completely outclassed by everything.
I would agree the double nerf was a little bit too much, just removal of an air spawn would of been enough for me since my issue with the R2Y2s was their air spawn and what ever I used against them had a ground spawn or had an air spawn but was super slow (B-29). Now it’s just a shame that they are outclassed by everything
The Ki-201 or the Kikka Kai could be added in place of the R2Y2 V-2 and V-3. The Kikka Kai (both the Kikka and Kikka Kai would be better as attackers imo but oh well) was a more powerful naval based version of the Kikka, and the Ki-201 was a heavy attacker loosely based off on the Me-262 and was to be armed with 2x 20mm and 2x 30mm, same as the R2Ys. The Kikka Kai was built and tested so that could be a better alternative to the Ki-201, but frankly i think people who get snooty about prototypes and mockups being added can go pound sand.
I’ll never get why people are just fine with Gaijin removing vehicles from the game. Surely it’d be better to just state that it’s fictitious to anyone who plays it instead of removing everyone hereafters ability to play it.
I am absolutely NOT ok with them removing vehicles, in this case specifically Japan has next to no unique aircraft past tier 4 and atleast these were a mature concept based on an upgrade to an existing aircraft, they're less fictitious than the E100
I don't mind fictional machines in WT, they add history, and as someone who enjoys vehicle games, I enjoy more vehicles. Besides tis a game, so fictional vehicles is fine not all of them are OP as some think they are.
From my experience flying the thing out back when it was 7.3 and just after it's nerf with the airspawn and BR increase, I could say at even 7.3 without an airspawn it was fairly well balanced as far as what it was going against and what it could do. Once it was moved to 7.7 it was getting a bit more of a stretch considering you could start facing things like the Sabres which practically outclass you in each meaningful way as well as some of the early MiG's as well which were nasty to deal with in an uptier, which was frequent. With it's new place at 8.0, a full BR ahead of where it had started, without an airspawn and with the expensive 16k repair cost spaded, it just makes me think, why? The guns: Absolutely wonderful. The tracer velocity of 920m/s and nearly 60 grams of TNT filler per shell are just absolutely devastating to anything that it hits so long as it doesn't spark which, for the Type 5 cannons, is somewhat infrequent. The handling: As mentioned by Tim himself, the roll rate, absolutely subpar. The turn rate is fairly decent, on part with the Meteor with some careful energy management, and the energy retention is pretty good considering it is a bus looking thing. However, 2 major caveats on this handling are: 1) The rudder acts like a nasty airbrake WHEN it engages, making the energy retention much worse if one isn't careful, and 2) The rudder also locks up first in a hive speed dive, making it harder to aim the guns when diving down onto a target. Handling Cont: Again as mentioned, the engines aren't too bad on the thing and she can giddy up and go somewhat decently, on par at least with most of her 'starter' brethren as it were, however, top speed and upper acceleration, as mentioned in the video, are somewhat lacking. The engines also don't like going up above 4-5km altitude, and usually enjoy the thicker air to breath, similar to a lot of early jet engines. What the video touched on but didn't go into depths over is how the plane handles combat damage. The TL;DR is that, it doesn't. If the wing takes even light yellow levels of damage, the roll rate is somewhat cut down on an already abysmal roll, but if you fuselage gets damaged to even light-moderate yellow, you lose most of your acceleration, top speed, turning capacity, and energy retention. It is critical to avoid damage whenever possible, by any amount. The bombs: As mentioned, take the blue bomb. That's it. No matter what, when taking a bomb, go blue. The brown bomb does not work. Plain and simple, it does not work in the game. They have said for years that they'd fix it, and make it work, especially when naval started to be introduced to the community as a whole out of the beta testing of it, but they haven't yet made it work as intended. Currently it is an 800kg bomb, with only ~30kg of tnt equivilent in it, making it worse than the Blue bomb in every capacity, and nearly useless entirely as it stands now. TL;DR: Great video overall, though as far as the plane goes, it's sad to see it continuing to get the boot higher in the BR because of a spreadsheet, as well as the removal of it entirely as the 3 planes make up nearly half of Japan's Tier 5 planes as a whole. Fake or not, we need the filler for something, as boring, or papery as it is. P.S. The Su-11 is just an overall better plane with objectively worse guns, a full BR lower, with better all around performance where it matters. Gaijin at work indeed.
Good thing I've already put a small amount of RP into this jet, so incase in the future they going to remove it, I still able to research it, for now I'm trying to research the J7W1 first and then Ki-84 line.
I dont have the v3, and haven't used the v1 in quite a while. I did enjoy it however, and I actually don't mind the guns lower rof.. and it has helped me use it, but my god are you a big target in this thing. I guess I better revisit and grab the others before it's too late as well.
Hey Tim, during the cockpit section of this review I think you should have mentioned that there is no rear cover for the pilot seat so it is very easy for the pilot to get knocked out. Pilot knockout makes up a much higher than normal percentage of deaths in these planes.
I kinda wish the Ki-201 Fire Dragon couldve been added but oh well its still ablueprint. Albeit a more "grounded in reality" design. Its like a Japanese 262 for those wondering, like a ultimate kikka
Hey thanks for the nice review and tips! They have been talking about removing them for a long time, but sounds more urgent than ever. I already got the first one, probably won't worry with the second. Unless there is a major difference? Also do you like to grind out stock planes' modules in AB? I might try that some.
The engine layout is different on all of them, also it isn't urgent, like with the Maus, Tiger II 105 and Panther II they will announce the removal way in advance.
The only reason you would want to get them is the free repair for another plane for that day you're playing them, other than that there's the collection value if you're a weeb. They can be effective at grinding out the Rank 5-6 area of the Japanese tech tree because groundpounding and to some degree basebombing are good enough options for the R2-s. (those cannons get pretty awkward with light pillboxes though) Their SL multipliers aren't horrible either as far as i remember and rank 5-s are great for the current event formats and they are fun planes as well you don't take seriously from the moment you look at them so it might be something you would pick up even after grinding out the tech tree. It's definitely not a strong plane, this is a borderline meme plane with battle ratings currently on the increase. If you're not interested in this type of plane you're probably not missing out though they have some potential for Ground RB since most people's first thought after seeing a plane is to turn with them.
I unlocked all 3 in the last couple months at 7.7 and got very good. I feel I contributed to the be change, the guns are so good I got a couple 8 kill games just from dumb enemies, the performance isn’t the best.
this thing would be great... except it got buffed to 8.0. which means it will almost always get uptiered to 8.7/9.0. this thing is good, but a fight against a sabre or a g91 is pretty one sided
great video and information and I honestly do not know why these got bumped up to a 8.0 BR from the 7.3 or what ever it was 7.7 or something. But I have never honestly have gave high BR jets a go in arcade battles and it really doesn't even look to bad after what i use to see when I played low BR in Air arcade props i truly stopped playing that mode. Gaijin will anouce if they are about to remove the R2Y2s. It was stated in a devblog that there isn't a replacement for them as of now, so I don't think they will be removed any day now. As for is it worth to grind them, ABSOLUTELY. The R2Y2s are really fun, the choice to move them from 7.7-8.0 is wierd but it does not effect you too much. Still there. All 3 are. If they remove them then Japan would have an incredibly easy grind to Top Tier. Kind of annoying though that it jumps from Tier 3 to Tier 5 for that line. Meaning that if you try to use the previous vehicle for the 110% bonus, you get a penalty instead for the R2Y2 being 2 tiers above.
