Beautiful. My first ever proper rail excursion was on the 19th of September 1977, a Waterloo to Newport, Cardiff and Swansea ‘Pleasureseeker’ hauled by 33 023 with a rake of MK1’s, running via Salisbury, Westbury and Bradford-on-Avon. We joined the train at Woking, on a crisp, frosty morning much like this. I remember me and my mates being cosily ensconced in a compartment, and the excitement of venturing to parts of the network I’d only ever seen before in photos, including the Box and Severn tunnels. There was a magic about train travel in this country back then that I think has been lost. Very happy memories, which your clip very much evoked.

So what about 46233? Having to drag the 47 for nearly all the way and 46233's predominantly white exhaust?? How utterly disappointing with your reference to a 'box on wheels' compared to the sheer elegance of one of Stanier's masterpeice's

Thank you. I’m glad this brought back some happy memories for you. There’s nothing like an excursion train for a great day out. I used to go on CAMRA Real Ale Rambles with friends many years ago (I don’t drink beer!). It was a great way to see different places that would have taken for ever by service train. But you really can’t beat a steam hauled excursion, especially when watching from a chilly station! 😊 Hilary

Travelling in a modern DMU or EMU is nothing like as exciting as it used to be in days gone by. Especially in steam days back in the 50s and 60s when nearly all trains had a steam loco up front and most carriages had compartments. You could open the windows and stick your head out in those days too!

This cold weather is providing ideal conditions for steam photography. These are the effects I used to go out for in winter in the 80s and 90s . Great footage 🙂

Yes, the Duchess was not feeling well that day . Despite the huge exhaust, 6233 was not working very hard and the 47 was doing most of the work. I had the same for my video of it leaving Woking - a bad cyclinder leak I think.

Great filming.I caught her at Whitchurch she was about 15 mins late due to the Winchfield waterstop taking longer than the time allowed and was going like the clappers trying to make up a bit time.

They never allow enough time at Winchfield. I was there so was able to film both the arrival and departure; if they did it much quicker I wouldn't be able to get shots of both! My video is on my channel if you'd like to have a look, as is the stop at Fleet on the return journey.

It's mainly water mate. The rest is a bit of smoke from coal with some CO2 which, in the bigger picture, is negligible.
Far less pollution per head than almost any other form of transport.
