are the bricks held in place by the downward pressure? they seemed pretty loose at first and i was worried about them falling over inside the furnace

If you’re melting it you probably left it in too long, but yea. It’s for heating metal for blacksmithing.
Is that a thin ceramic blanket? I've never seen one that thin. Mine is really bulky.

@FullSteamDesigns you don't need to stabilise it and maybe cover it in mortar? So you don't get Silicosis
