Your point about sprite comics being a gateway into other creative endeavors is on point. What a nostalgia trip, I spent so much time growing up on the Mystical Forest Zone. Super awesome you were able to get a hold of them! And somehow didn't realize it was two brothers running the whole thing.
    Thanks Kajin and Damien :D

When I was younger I used to have such a stupid elitist disregard for sprite art and animation, mainly out of jealously that they could smash out animations far faster than I could draw frame by frame. Now the joke is on me because I still hardly know any photoshop tricks or animation short cuts, I probably could have benefited from dabbling in a fandom or two

    • @SuperSwimTeam7
      @SuperSwimTeam7  4 года назад +5

That's one of the reasons I shyed away from it in my teens. I took classes on photoshop, but I stopped being creative. I stopped writing, drawing, editing for fun, I just stopped being creative. I did that for like three years, and I seriously regret depriving myself of all that time I could have been learning and growing

Wow, I didn't expect to hear a shout out to Neglected Mario Characters 😲 I have no idea how I found that but I used to frequent that site all the time! I didn't know that it was one of the first sprite comics, that and the MFZ really struck me with a wave of nostalgia. Well done on this video. I'm not a sprite artist or sprite comic maker, but Kajin and Damien and the MFZ introduced me to the world of custom made sprites and made me respect spriters as a whole. After reading the newest issue of inSONICnia I would just spend the rest of the time just admiring the work they and the other forum users made. Thanks to them I spend hours on the Spriter's Resource looking at the sprites from my favorite games and admiring the hard work that is put into making sprites.

I was huge into Sonic sprite comics from the mid 2000s into early 2010s. Smackjeeves was where I made my home for this community, and it introduced me to many friends who I'm still in contact with today, and Mystical Forest Zone is where I first learned about Smackjeeves. Even now I still do make sprites, though I moreso do it as a fun hobby for myself to visualize OCs, rather than posting comics online. It would not be an exaggeration to say it's because of sprite comics, and Sonic sprite comics specifically, that made my online life how it is today.

I made sprite comics on Smack Jeeves too!!! If I hadn't done that, I never would have gotten into graphic design or video editing, and I never would have been a RUclipsr. Making sprite comics on SmackJeeves has always been my secret origin of sorts as well

I don't even know how I got into online sprite comics, but I was there in early 2000s. Bob and George, Secret of Mana Theater, Stage Select, Stardroids... (huh, a lot of megaman - even though I was a battle network fan more than a classic megaman fan).
...And InSonicNia was one of them. I'd like to pass my respects to the creators, it was a great work of art and passion. I'll never forget the 200th issue and how much it made me smile! Glad to see the memories of these wonderful works of passion still ring true in spite of the sheer avalanche of data that is out there in the internet of the 2020s....

Super happy to see a video about sprite comics! They absolutely dominated my formative Internet years. I did wonder what happened to MFZ! Some of my Sonic sprites were put up on the site and inspired some poses that are still used in sprite projects today! My favourite comics back then were That's My Sonic!, Power Rings and another one with a red Super Sonic whose name escapes me ATM.
I've made a lot of sprite comics for myself way back when but rarely if ever published them online. I'm definitely interested in getting back into spriting!
Apologies for the ramble lol Great video!

I must agree, those days reading and creating my own Sonic Sprite comics were some of my fondest memories as a tween, back in the early 2000s. Mystical Forest Zone, MG Comics, Spriter's Resource, PsyGuy, etc. First time I ever did anything creative; and it really got me into writing stories, game design, and the like. Met many good peeps on some of those forums, wish I would've kept up with them.
Glad to see it's not something that's been forgotten. My only regret is that I can't remember one of the adult series I read, where Sonic and the gang were roommates, and it was very sexual in manner, but extremely funny too.

Found this video the other day on Twitter on a discussion of said medium. Honestly I had completely forgotten abot TMFZ and InSomicNia, I now remember vividly finding the site and be amazed by the style and direction of the sprite comics and the site itself.
I remember making also a comic that went pretty much nowhere but it sparked my interest in graphic design.
Sad to see in a way that nowadays site exploring through search engines is pretty much dead, and that sites nowadays barely exist like they used to, and the ones that does always aim for the same barren design for the sake of function. Like I get it but sites before used to have such unique designs from one to another (TMFZ, Newgrounds, Armor games, etc).
I must mention I am grateful from ISN as my first introduction to graphic design as a whole, which lead to learning sprite work, Photoshop and circle again by working on Minecraft texture packs.
I must read these comics again.

Wow, this was a real nostalgia trip, seeing what became of Sonic and Pals, as well as InSonicnia and MFZ! I used to make sprite comics as well when I was in high school back in the early 2000's, although I stopped shortly before I reached the 100 issue milestone of my main comic "When Games Collide" because I wanted it to be something special and animated, with a Gutsmans Ass joke at the beginning since that comic was all about various video game characters along with some of my OC's meeting up through otherworldly means and getting flung into the games that started each characters careers, starting with Megaman 1.
I think I actually did a cliffhanger right before Gutsman's boss chamber with Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Link, Megaman, and my self-insert getting ready to fight off all of the enemies from the stage that I had forgotten to put into previous pages and Link had a Metool helmet stuck to the end of the Master Sword.

Ahhh... Sonic sprite comics... Making them myself was pretty much how I got thrown head-first into the internet and gained some minute sense of notoriety. I was 13 when I started reading those comics, and started making my own series, Sonic Future. I made the first 286 pages before it even went online. I was so inspired, I made that much through sheer passion, even though I had nowhere to host it. Thanks to The Sonlight Forums, someone suggested Smack Jeeves Webcomic Hosting, and Sonic Future's first page debuted the same day as Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I definitely took more Sonic & Pals leanings in the style, though, that's for sure! It didn't make a whole lot of sense. I wonder what would happen if I suddenly made it pop back up again...?

SJ is where I posted a few of my Sprite comics too! I made a 300 something page comic about one of Sonic's supporting cast members that sold their soul to get revenge on Sonic. It was really edgy and over the top, but so was I at the time. It taught me so many skills I still use today, regarding art and design

I don't think it was InSonicnia but I remember way back in the early 2000s there was a site dedicated mostly to one long ass sonic comic that I think started with the older games sprites and then transitioned into the sonic advance sprites. As far as I can recall it had humor in it but took itself seriously to an extent with the story and world building. I think Knuckles was some dumbass in it or something. Idk. Wish all these sites we're still easy to find.

Ohey I see myself in here :O Or rather a very old cringey self but still! I have to agree though...sprite comics were definitely a great gateway to help with things later in life. I have no idea where I'd be at had I not stumbled upon the medium. For me though it started with sprite animations, which are also dying out as far as I'm aware. But when I found about sprite comics I thought "I could tell these stories in a much faster more convenient way....and since I'm still in school that's a great idea." As years went on I still practiced pixel art and now I only make my own custom stuff. I sometimes wonder about making a sprite comic in this new period of time and wonder how would it be received compared to how things used to be after all it's been over a decade.

You know Cyanide and Happiness? Check out their instagram page, if you could make a popular "comic strip" style comic, and upload it to Insta, I think it could work. The problem is finding a place where people are, and the fandom is VERY scattered. There's no central hub anymore, that's what Drunk Duck, the MFZ, and SJ were.
It's wild how working on these comics over a decade ago effected all of us in ways that still resonate today.

And I know right? It's insane to look at everyone we worked with and see that...oh we all went for creative mediums in life and have improved so much. So proud of the cringe family from the SJ days haha
