Im doing this assignment and im stuck like this question is x^2-6x-16 gives me (x+2) (x-8) but my teachers does some adding steps and mulipication steps to side im confuse on how he get the numbers
@@biggboyy3508 If the leading coefficient is 1, like in this case, you only need to find two numbers whose sum is the middle term and whose product is the last term. Here, your middle term is -6 and your last term is -16. Forget about the signs for a moment, what are the factors of 16? 1 x 16 2 x 8 4 x 4 Can you get a sum of 6 (ignoring the signs for a minute) by subtracting from any of these pairs of numbers? 1, 16 -> no 2, 8 -> yes 8 - 2 = 6 4, 4 -> no So we have found our pair, now you can think about the signs. Now, you know the middle term is negative and the last term is negative. We know that two numbers multiplied together that result in a negative come from opposite signs. This means one sign is negative and the other is positive. Also since the middle term is negative, your number that is larger in terms of absolute value must be negative. So +2, and -8 are your numbers just as you found above. (x + 2)(x - 8) = x^2 - 6x - 16 I hope this helps, drop another problem if you are still confused :)
@@biggboyy3508 I have an email, but I will just respond here, it's a bit faster. I only check my email once a day at most. I look at RUclips comments every few hours or so.
this video is extremely helpful for my next chapter test thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck on your test! :)
GreeneMath.com thanks. 😊
You are very welcome! :)
Great explanation, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
GreeneMath.com is the polynomial x³ + 4x + 4 factorable? Thanks aheadd!!
No it's prime.
@@Greenemath oh okay. Thank you very much!
@@marydiannefronteras4214 Of course, always happy to help :)
