    Couple of notes. I'm a 27 year professional composites veteran, former college composites instructor, and part-time prop maker who loves your channel. I currently run the lamination department at a boat company in Florida. We use 0.75 ounce chopped mat a lot. It wets out easily, contours easier than 1.5 ounce and uses less resin while still providing a good barrier. Chopped mat requires about 65%-70% resin by weight, which makes it a resin rich laminate but it helps in consolidation and elimination of air. A resin starved laminate is a weak laminate.
    As for coating epoxy with polyester, there will be adhesion issues. Polyesters do not adhere to epoxies, even if they are sanded. Epoxies do adhere to hardened polyesters, though. I'm curious to know how the adhesion is on the inside where you coated the epoxy with polyester and fiberglass.

      This is great ya now that I have made a few things I realize its better to just use more resin and a little faster as well. I will have to try the thinner stuff. The 3oz really sucks up the resin. Now I noticed a few air bubbles in a couple places but it seems to be ok going over the epoxy. At least it seems to be working on the last two skeleton statues we made. We welcome any feedback and thank you for chiming in with your experience and knowledge. Its very much appreciated.

    Hey HollywoodHaunter! Love your channel! I've realized your channel is the only real channel I've found that really covers fiber glassing foam for sculpture work in detail, and I hope you'll indulge me because I have a few questions.
    Can you tell me when to use Resin or Aquaresin and what their benefits are? I know you use Polyester Resin to apply the CSM/mat over the foil right? But in this video at 1:53 you mentioned using resin instead of foil. Can you elaborate on that for me?
    Does a gelcoat or an Aqua Resin smooth out your sculpture? I'm trying to make some sculptures where the surface needs to basically look like the surface of a car....Super smooth, and I'd love to sand as little as possible.
    One more question...have you ever heard of using Jesso to cover foam before fiberglassing instead of aluminum foil? I read on a forum that it works, and to me that would save many hours as an alternative to foiling. I'd love to confirm that. Anyway! Keep up the good work! Love to shadow you or help out with a project one day!

    • @HollywoodHaunter
      @HollywoodHaunter  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the kind words. I haven't used Jesso, but it sounds cool. There are so many products that save time or things we could use. I'm still learning, too. The resin I used was called EpoxAmite from Smooth-on, and I was just trying a layer of that instead of the foil to see if it was faster. It saves time but costs more, so it depends on what you're doing the project for. If you ever find a great product to get that smooth finish, please let me know. Thanks again.

    2) I would not mind a tiny bit more information. I know nothing about the process you were doing. Like why foil? What is the standard practice and what and why are you doing it differently. I love informative & behind the scenes stuff. Maybe it’s just me and everyone else already knows ...if so I’m sorry for being 🤓 nerdy 😉
    3) You two are adorable together and I really enjoyed your joking with each other!
    Thanks for the fun, this was so great to watch!!!!!💚

      Thank you very much MrsC B it really comes down to cost. There are so many products you can get to cover the foam but we are trying to use stuff we already had. The polyester resin melts the foam unless you apply some kind of barrier first. We tried a couple different ways. the foil being the cheapest but most labor intensive. So we were just figuring stuff out by trying it.

I’m curious cause I’m strongly considering building a small foam slide in camper for my truck. I do a lot of traveling for work. I’m curious which first layer works best. Since I would much rather use polyester resin to keep my over all cost lower.
