  • Switzerland pulls back from the F-35 after U.S. tariffs and NATO pressure, raising a bigger question: is this fighter jet becoming a political loyalty test under Donald Trump? As Canada reviews its $19B F-35 deal, this video breaks down NATO tensions, defense spending demands, and why allies are rethinking reliance on U.S.-controlled weapons systems.

      The part about the F35 being tied to the US is true. We have a man child as president who like to think that he is untouchable. And to a point he is but this clown has no self control. He believes his own lies.
      While right now the US is holding tight on the tech. But it is true that the planes get updates from the mfg. And to say they are a bit slow is not true,they are almost dead.
      The hours of cost to fly are nuts. The Gripe. Or even the euro fighter would be a much better choice that the F 35. The stealth dies work but the numbers built per year is so slow.

      Just to clarify - the JAS 39 Gripen does NOT have a Rolls Royce engine, period.
      And there are no plans to change that. Choosing another engine is almost like building a plane from scratch, since the plane is built around the engine. It would mean at least a 10-15 year development project with all the trials and tests required, assuming the engine has the necessary characteristics, which is doubtful.

    • @wellingtoncrescent2480
      @wellingtoncrescent2480 Month ago +17

      Essentially true, though I think the Gripen operating cost is closer to $8000. You also need to factor in the 50% downtime reported by the US Air Force for their F35 fleet in non-Arctic conditions, which compares to 10-30% downtime with the Gripen. The Saab deal proposing a North American production facility in collaboration with Bombardier Canada also includes the Golden Eye Surveillance AWAC, which will be produced in Bombardier's Toronto facility (the Gripen will be built by Bombardier in Montreal). Although the Gripen lacks 5th generation stealth capabilities, its superior radar jamming does much to remedy this shortcoming. Add the fact that the Gripen can launch from a 900m road or ice highway, with a 10 minute turn-around time to re-fuel and re-arm with a small unspecialized ground crew. In comparison, the F35 requires heated ground storage, a 2.4 km paved runway, and a 4h time to re-fuel and re-arm with a larger, specialized ground crew. As a Canadian, I'm all for the Gripen deal.

    • @apveening

      @wellingtoncrescent2480 Don't overlook the 90+% downtime for the F35 in Arctic conditions.

    • @Wallstreetavarice
      @Wallstreetavarice Month ago +4

      Those are the numbers for older Gripens that don't compete as well. The more modern ones are more expensive go run, but still about half that of an F35

    • @apveening
      @apveening Month ago +3

      @Wallstreetavarice And those older Gripens still perform a lot better in Arctic conditions than the F35.

    • @AndersJackson
      @AndersJackson 29 days ago +1

      And you get fewer potential flight hours, as it needs more/longer service with special trained crew just to refule and rearm.
      Jas need on expert and then conscripts to do the same. Yes, we have designed it so to be able to handle an attack from Russia.
      F-35 is designed to attack another country when you set the scheduled, not for defence. Where you have to be ready all the time, like every plane counts. All the time.
      F-35 relies on attack technology, stealth.
      Gripen is designed to defend, when you Enemy already is on full alert. And stealth is not that important.
      Communication and knowledge about the current situation is in the air is way more important. That the pilot/plane knows where Enemy are way before the plane physically have detected the Enemy flying object and can intercept an much faster object before it past, or launch an attack on the right direction before being in physical sight.
      That is what Gripen does.
      Yes, SAAB fighters are the only known fighters that have had a lock on US spy plane.

      Two engines are actually two Point of failures.
      It is actually less engine problems, and more air time with one
      It is called probability and is a bitch when you have not trained to do thatath correctly.
      Yes, I also used to think two or three are better for redundancy. It isn't.
      There are other reasons to have two or more engines. Cost might be one, but service and dependency and easier service is not any one those.

  • @JérômeSteamPilotRöthlisberger

    Fact-check on the Swiss situation: The term 'pulling back' is misleading here. Switzerland hasn't changed its strategic decision, but it is strictly adhering to the 6 billion CHF budget cap approved by the voters. If unit costs or inflation rise, the number of aircraft is adjusted to stay within that legal financial limit. This is a matter of 'sticking to the agreed budget' and maintaining fiscal discipline, rather than a political withdrawal from the F-35 program.

    • @JérômeSteamPilotRöthlisberger
      @JérômeSteamPilotRöthlisberger 28 days ago

      That being said, public sentiment has shifted significantly. Many Swiss citizens would likely vote differently today. The F-35’s extreme software dependency is increasingly seen as a threat to national sovereignty. In hindsight, relying so heavily on the US system appears to have been a mistake. The Saab Gripen represents the independence, versatility, and robustness that is actually valued in Switzerland.

    Trump and his greasy henchmen thought they were being clever by forcing the rest of NATO to up their spending. (The previous model was that the US would use its armed forces to project power, while NATO countries bought American goods and services.). They believed NATO countries had no alternative but to buy their arms from the USA,. They were wrong, and now they're upset.
    The US does what greedy corporations have been trying to do for some time: maintain a paralegal ownership and control over the products they sell to their customers. It's why there is now a 'right to repair' movement. Absurd restrictions over how Ukraine used their weapons, the interference with Germany's transfer of MRAPS, and so on.

    Do Canada want to be a US Colony or an independent country?
    This is the decision they make with F-35 fighter airplanes.
    Software for the fighter is designed and programmes in USA, and changes in design for the F-35 had to go through USA.
    The JAS Gripen Canada is handed a design, and can do changes of their own. It doesn't need approval from Sweden and SAAB. And you will have knowledge about the fighter to add and test Canadian modifications.
    It gives sovereign control over the planes after the deal. And all systems are working now, not after the planes are some to Canada.
    And dual fighters in air forces are not unknown. Like when transit to a new model of fighters.

    US control is not what Canada should require. Diversion is the key not Washington, at all.

    the F35 deal is horrible all the way around. Buying them locks you into a contract that balloons in cost at America's whim. Each plane has an initial cost and then the cost of ownership that you cannot control. Its 300 million a plane to start and 50k each time it takes off, not to mention how much they want to charge you to service the plane, cause they wont let you do it. This all in a plane by the way that will lose to an f-18 in a dogfight.

    If america feels countries need f35s then they should provide them and pay for their upkeep while the host nations also pursue independent assets to maintain autonomy in prosecuting its seperate military requirements. Trumps direction for nato to increase military spending was more to do with buying US weapons, not on parity partnerships. Reliance on a foriegn power for your military materials makes you suseptible to their political and financial mandates rendering it impotent should you clash with these designs. Case in point US is now struggling to actually manufacture these aircraft as they are reliant on essential metals from Canada. This is now been blocked due to the change of american foriegn and financial policies. Never put all your eggs in onebasket.

      We signed a contract for 16. So we have to take those...but we need a fleet of 80 + fighters. I'd like to see us take the Gripen.

    This just a contract signing up to dependence on the US and Europeans should not accept this. Buy European planes and refuse to comply.

    The F35 is far too slow to be used as an interceptor. It takes sometimes hours to start in cold weather it's stealth capabilities have been rendered useless by recent radar development. The hourly costs and less than 50% serviceability has made training next to impossible. Paint them orange and rename to the Trump Fighter Over weight very slow (both meanings of the word) and more noise than action.

    The answer is simple. IF F-35 is a NATO project. NATO should own the updates and maintenance, not the US. If that independence is not possible, stop buying F-35.
