I miss how you could pick up and throw stuff in GTA 4. It's pretty insignificant but makes it more realistic

You know, they probably removed dismemberment due to the backlash against violence in videogames, and they probably added the flying thing so it still looks powerful and intimidating. Just look at gta 3, they all die in place or fall back at best.
well, that partially depends on the type of grenade. For a defensive Grenade, yes, shrapnell is the killer. Offensive Grenades were designed to primarily use their explosive filler, like the famous german Stiehlhandgranate (which later got the Splitterring attachment to turn it into a defensive grenade). For them, shrapnells weren't always desired (at least big shrapnels), because they might be thrown into a trench or building just as you're about to storm into it. You would like to minimze the amount of shrapnells that are flying in YOUR direction as well. And sometimes the concussive blast of explosives can be all you need.
You can survive the shrapnel.
You cannot survive the shockwave that will shake your insides into a liquid though.

You couldve tested portable titles
Actually gta V’s grenade logic and euphoria was the most realistic one that didn’t have dismemberment because in real life a fragmentation grenade like the one you were using dosent actually have enough blast to blow somebody away like in gta 4 but instead knocks you off your feet and maybe flips you over. This is because the shrapnel from the grenade is what’s supposed to kill you.

The reason GTA VC and beyond didn't show dismemberment was because of a study in 2001 saying there were too many "graphic, violent, and disturbing" video games that children were playing, and Rockstar may or may not have been sued for that, so they didn't want that to happen in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, or 2013. fAcTtTtTt!!

GTA 3 on PC was like that because the body of peds were made in blocks the head , arms , torso and legs. So it was quite fun to watch and shoot the legs and hands and heads off with snipers. Although the Android one was like every other GTA series they fixed that with graphics development.
