    Always good to see new shiny toys. But its also good to weave the common/uncommon ones into a narrative. The "magic" compass from Pirates of the Caribbean is a very good example of a less rare item that fits into this.

      This was done really well with the introduction of the speaking stones. Immediately the first thing the party does is cause horrible speaker-phone like feedback. They get an ear splitting demonstration that magic can be used very wrongly for everything from just annoying to world-ending bad horrors.

    Saw the movie last night. It was so much better than I thought it would be. Seriously, it is great. Hasbro made a very good call making it family friendly enough to garner a PG-13 rating--this will pay off tremendously and should serve as a model for future productions.

      @@obiwankenobi9439 Totally serious. The "family friendly" comment is not a veiled political rant, it is simply a matter of smart business. Families are desperate for movies they can see together and as a toy and game centric company, Hasbro needs to court them to be successful.

    I was acutaly plannning to homebrew an item that worked exactly like the Hither-Thither Staff, and all I could think when watching the movie was how much I wanted that magic portal gun!

    I love how the Sorcerer acted like "A Hither Tither Staff", as though there were many around and he had seen some before.

    The D&D movie just watched it and i loved it, it was awesome love the geek nods to us players of the game itself as well as making some insane fight scenes. Hope they will make more of these movies!

    Would be nice to see some well known magic items like. A Bag of Holding, Ring of Invisibility, Boots of Speed, Cloak of Elvenkind...magic items that have existed since the birth of D&D.

      The necklace the child has could be considered a variant on a ring of Invisibility. And Simon does have a bag of holding- you see its classic design a couple of times.

      @@ronaldmulsoff4431 every time Edgin is given something in the movie he have it to Simon and says, "Hold this." It didn't click until a friend pointed it out after the movie that he was giving it to him because he had the party's bag of holding.

      @@ronaldmulsoff4431 Yeah, that necklace has (officially?) been identified as a pendant of invisibility. Not as powerful as the ring, because limited uses per day.

      Several of those were in the film.
      Simon has a Bag of Holding.
      The Necklace is a variant of the Ring of Invisibility.
      The wizard has a Cloak of Many Colours.

    Honor Among Thieves gets better and better with each viewing. I sincerely hope it finds a larger audience as it will be a crime as to not to get more movies like it.

    The movie was actually very capable of being scary I would like to see ANY ravenloft movies or shows. A dnd cinematic universe would be cool I know mcu has been tainted but I just want to see more stories

    What about Xenk's Daggersword? The blade has runes on it that glow, which means it has some other powers that being able to detach and reattach the long sword.

      As a paladin he gets magic he can cast on his weapon, which he did in the movie.

    I thought that Christopher would have been in on the creative process much earlier for the movie. The movie was great fun and I am glad to hear how the D&D team adapted to the new items.

    I hear so mamy people online talk about how they would guve anything to play at Matt Mercer's table. Don't get me wrong that would be great. However I have been playing D&D since 1983 and for me I would give anything to play at Chris Perkins table.

    Yeah I always create versions of stuff in movies for my dungeons I’ve always liked doing for my d&d campaign ever since high school for me, when my uncle introduced me to dungeons and dragons and showed me all the ropes. Best day of my life. Especially stuff like this thank you wizards of the coast for these new powerful items and for everything!!!

    I also thought the cleric token that lets the user cast Speak with Dead at-will (with infinite charges?) was interesting. I wish they had talked about it here.

    i wanna know what that thing was that Simon used that was on his hip. was it the movies way of doing spell slots? was it a spell dispenser? or some kind of magic item?

    I have just returned from the cinema. I have watched the movie and my opinion is:
    LEARN DISNEY, LEARN!
    More focused into action than comedy I guessed in the begining. If Paramount keeps the right path, without mistakes, this could be the year 0 of the D&D cinematographic scene.

    What about Simon's Deathly token? I know it's speak with dead but what is a fair number of charges?

      Infinite number of charges is fair when you think of how it actually works. You can only ask the person 5 questions and after that, they stay dead PERMANENTLY, which means it can only be used once on someone and after that, no magical item or spell can bring them back.

    I definitely loved the creativity they used the portal gun, i mean hither tither staff XD, it's a clever nod to portal franchise and the other clever nods to few other franchises

    I’m sad you didn’t make Xenk’s sword as an actual item along with Simon’s component pouch and the other sword (you’ll know what one when you see the movie) and the druids sling. Yes I understand some of these are meh items but I wanna know.

      Xenk's sword is in his stat block so we can rebuild it from there and Doric's sling was... just an arm-mounted sling.

    How about designing a magic bow... Or a magic melee weapon that's not a sword... As a DM I do love designing magic items but the core magic items leave much room for desire.

      @@mattcurnell2545 Seriously, just re-skin anything you want. The DMG lists them as weapon+1, ammunition +1, and so on just for that purpose. Or that a Legendary weapon couldn't reform to match the one who attuned to it.

      It’s rare the designers create unique or different items that aren’t traditional swords. That’s the complaint not that there aren’t magical versions of them but a lack of variety

    sadley, there is no good copy of 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' out there. Too bad, it's the best 80's D&D movie ever.

      I would love to see a remake as the original is a bit dated. However there are great moments in that film, the scene where they raise the sorcerer from his tomb and then he kills the witch, the horror and brutality were fantastic.

    I remember playing Advanced D&D for hours and then the best bit rolling for Magic Items Loot That looked like a wand od Dimension door Hehe Later on when 3.5 ed came out we had a wizard in or party not too bright 1 casted dimension door then dimensianl anchor which blocked teleportation so the GM of the game a good friend of mine read both spells and got the player to rool a d4 dice plus half his level He was basically out of the fight for 6 rounds

    You guys didn't add the potato as a magic item, I noticed. How easy--and cool--would it have been to have a potato that once it hits an opponent uses a Powerword Stun spell to try and knock an opponent out?

    @Dungeons & Dragons - honestly, before you spill out more items better find a solution to satisfy the german market. No spellcards or anything related available anywhere anymore. Finding out who is responsible or has the license is a pain and once you get a contact (not via your homepage, that´s for sure) you don´t even get a reply. That is very very unsatisfying and disappointing.

    Wait, why are these guys talking about the movie?! Hasbro clearly left WOTC of the end credits. If I remember correctly, the end credits stated the movie was “Based on a game by Hasbro”. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, it's really good and so much FUN!
    But, knowing that the writers did not had a mechanical idea for these items when they developed the story is a let down for me.
    They didn't do the basic homework, and the reverse engineering process just makes me a little sad, especially for the character stats in the Thieves' Gallery.
    Well, can't have everything 😄.. I'm still grateful for what we got.

    That is one thing that was a bit disappointing. For the most part, they had no magical items before the movie. I get that the two were in prison so would have had little. The sorcerer on the other hand? He accumulated more magic in the span of a few weeks than all his years.

    Huh. For real DM‘s, this wasn’t hard at all. It’s just a rod/staff/wand of dimension door, with a Rule of Fun interpretation of the spell effects. The character in the movie even says it has a range of 500 feet. Just like the spell. I feel bad for Perkins and the other WOTC guys who are slaves to their own rules.
    Also, the horn would absolutely be an artifact!

    I still use Disjunction to this day. In fact the 2nd edition priest spells, wizard spells, the complete tome of magic items, and complete psionics ala darksun, are available if someone wants it. 5e is soo dumbed down. Keep it simple stupid, just no.
