Please let this be the first of a series of Father Brown books!! If they are a fraction as enjoyable as your Sherlock Holmes series I will be a happy man…excellent work and greatly appreciated and enjoyed
I can’t tell you how excited i am that you are reading the Father Brown stories. I’ve seen the show but have never read the books. This is has considerably brightened my day.
@@davidwhite7294 If you mean the Polish woman, that's quite realistic for the 1950's. Even an Agatha Christie book from 1940's has a similar immigrant. Interesting thing is, the amount of PC in the Father Brown series varies a lot from season to season. I enjoyed the series. But it's just a fairly good series from the 2010's, nothing more. It has so little to do with Chesterton's work that it should have had a different name.
@@martavdz4972 I don’t mean the Polish woman, let’s not mince words, l mean the passing black characters that are written in to all the episodes. It’s blinkin nonsense if not plain ol, lies. As a child l would be stopped and questioned by police ,because of my working class appearance , if l walked to Brockley or Blackheath and told “get back to your own area and don’t come here again” . If a black person tried to walk through a village like Kembleford they would have been arrested and run out of town if not beaten up.l was born in 52 so l know what it was like for the Windrush generation. All these TV series that depict black characters as Doctors, Lawyers etc in the 50s are just part of a movement to re-write history leaving out the appalling treatment that black people suffered when they first came here. I remember the signs in Boarding House Windows. No Blacks,no lrish,no kids and no dogs.Such signs would have been all over a middle class enclave like the fictional Kembleford.
I wish there was a way to add a comment and give a thumbs up to a whole playlist, and the entire channel, not just individual videos. I loved your narration of the Sherlock Holmes series, but this...this is a thing of beauty. Very much appreciated!
When you had completed the Sherlock Holmes stories I was sad. Your voice has soothed me many times when unable to sleep. Imagine, then, my surprise when I saw that you had begun reading these Father Brown mysteries..such a delight to listen to them. Thank you for your time and effort.
Chesterton may be my favorite author and I absolutely loved the Father Brown stories. My favorite was 'The Paradise of Thieves,' but it is honestly hard to choose among them all. Thank you for this. I am most thrilled to see this here.
Greg Sir This is actually and I mean actually!! Ironic as I am currently watching father Brown that I started Binge watching a couple of weeks ago🙈🤷♂️ As always Thank you Sir for the Extras we are Getting until we see what’s next for The Audiobook Narration God👍
This is my absolute favorite story that you read, GW. It unwinds slowly and skillfully. Each word is perfectly emphasized. Each character has his own personality. The pacing is right on, acceleating and hesitating as the situation requires. Your pitch rises and falls like a piece of expressive music. I never tire of listening to it, and I've listened hundreds of times. What a piece of art!
As with your reading of Sherlock Holmes - I suddenly understand the story much better and see it in more vivid colours! Are you planning to read all Father Brown stories? I always liked this story because of Chesterton's "harsh but fair" presentation of the Presbyterian blacksmith. He describes him as harsh but fair, and has a harsh but fair attitude to him himself ☺️ Being a Presbyterian in a peripheral Catholic region with Catholic friends in the mostly atheist Czechia, I like the message that normal human humility can unite people ☺️
Yes. It's a helpful reminder that even in an English village so long ago there was great diversity of belief, class, thinking and yet somehow people rubbed along. Possibly?
I totally agree! Wagland brings layers of thought in these tales I frankly did not pick up when I read them years ago. Chesterton is both a clever writer, but one with self restraint. The reader feels down right chuffed by the end of the story. We are moral creatures, eh? But it never seems like wise tale as we begin.😮❤
I am thrilled you are adding more stories to your channel! GK Chesterton is a fine choice. I prefer detective mysteries, but avoid horror, ghosts, vampires, etc. Too grim. You can experiment as much as you like with delivery. That's a good way to stretch your range. I'll still be listening.
Yay! Love these books, (and even the semi-resemblance to Fr Brown in the TV series). Much prefer the books, especially with you as narrator/voice actor. Thank you, Mr. Wagland!
I love the Father Brown stories in particular - do hope you might be considering recording more Chesterton. Not sure about the experiment; sounds a little AI to me! It lacks your customary *timbre* , that's for sure, which is strangely unsettling.
I agree that you would reinvest this series with more poignant meaning. I remember seeing a dramatization of this story but it could not hold a candle to your one man version. I think you could do this with the whole series and put the BBC out of business. JK of course but not totally kidding.
They are big novels, aren't they? Or did he do short stories: I know he was very prolific and have thought about doing the Four series but maybe the Spanish would defeat me.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio The Mind of JG Reeder are obviously amazing, as are the PC Lee stories which Toby Young did - both were on BBC but are no longer available. Sanders of the River/Bosambo stories are superbly entertaining, but any sensitivity reader would get an aneurysm from one page !
Late to the party. 😉 Read these as a teenager, a very long time ago. Doyle always was my favorite, still have complete Sherlock Holmes collections on my shelf. However, Agatha Christie and Chesterton occupied a lot of my time. The writing and logic was a refreshment compared to the releases of the time. Excellently played, Good Fellow. Excellently played. Many thanks stfcryan1
Can’t wait 😊
Hear! Hear!
@stfcryan1 Father Brown and Flambeau are introduced to the world in "The Blue Cross."
Still my favorite. Earlier written stories are generally better, though that's a matter of taste and preference.
'I am a man,' answered Father Brown gravely; 'and therefore have all devils in my heart.'
One of my favourites.
It's a fantastic line! Yes!
I can’t tell you how excited i am that you are reading the Father Brown stories. I’ve seen the show but have never read the books. This is has considerably brightened my day.
The TV series has very little to do with the books. It is updated to the 50s and filled with PC immigrant characters, it’s quite ridiculous.
You'll see little resemblance to the series. The books are better. 😊

Thanks for listening Jackie. There seem to be lots of Father Brown stories and they’re longer than the average Sherlock one too. All the best!
Well, it must be Christmas, cause here you are again! ❤️
Ha! But where's the turkey? (Don't answer that!) Thanks GV
Wonderful…..that Chesterton fellow…..thank you .
Yes, he is. Hope you enjoy the rest. Cheers John.
Thanks for the upload! I am thoroughly enjoying your father brown readings!
Good to hear it, CF. Thanks for listening.
Thanks, Uncle Greg!
No worries, Nephew! Chesterton must be right up your street!
Really nice. I listen to these to relax in the evening. Keep them coming.

Thank you Jeannine. It's a great tale!
I love these stories, and I hope you do all of them. I can’t listen to any other audible versions of Sherlock Holmes after hearing yours. Big thanks!
That was awesome Greg.
Thank you Darrell. Glad you liked it.
Thank you Greg, as always your voice is soothing. I would watch the series on PBS. ❤
Thanks for listening, Catherine.
Dear Greg. I really enjoyed that, thank you, a DELIGHT! I hope there will be many more Father Browns now.
I'm hoping so, Clair. There are tons of them - as long as there's an audience for them, and I think there might be.
Love Chesterton! I hope you'll cover more of his work.
Hoping to, Derpy Sherpa!
This is lovely and the gentle narration fits the story. 👍
Very nicely done! Thank you!

Greg, you have hit another home run. I agree the choice of father brown was excellent. H.G. Wells could be a option?
Yes. I've done quite a lot of Wells on audible if you're interested.

Probably not as I've recorded all of Conan Doyle's Sherlocks. There might be a few in the public domain but not many.
