I just found a stack of these up in the attic of a school I work for. Was intrigued so looked them up. I was so glad that baby Linus was the first thing that popped up to shed some light on my mysterious stack of tablets. 😁 Thanks! Don't ever delete these old videos.
I got one for demo, Excellent touch screen responsive, Windows 7 works extremely well with touch, Standard file sharing, and best of all, install any of your fav Application. Truly a historic device.
Acer iconia w500 is so good performance. I have it since July 2012 ago. It's so help me doing my job. It's so simple gadget, but so usefull. Thank for acer!
Good review! but you didn't go over the bluetooth 3.0 or touchscreen features; Not to mention how the tablet & keyboard locks together for carrying mode.
@konic40 I saw CNet's video of this tablet and they said a downfall to this tablet is you have to disconnect the keyboard before you fold it up like a net book. So no you cannot.
I just got one of these for free in 2018. I just installed a 120gb msata and loading windows 10, 32 bit right now, we'll see how it works. I only want it as a music/video player so it should be ok. It's super thick though, and the tablet is way heavier than the keyboard so it has a hard time trying to stay on the keyboard because it falls backwards, but it has a nice screen and 2 usb ports + ssd card reader. I have a bunch of 128gb sd cards with media on them, I hope this can read them.
My guess would be yes but there is better, it should be able to do basic drawing without a problem with a capacitive stylus, BUT if you are looking for a drawing tablet with pressure sensitivity you probably want an active digitizer built around the screen such as a Wacom (which the Iconia doesn't have). Alternatively you could just use the usb ports to put a digitizer on the side, but in that case you wouldn't be drawing directly on the screen.
i just purchased this tablet for school use and im imprssed with te graphics performence it aint like my alienware m11xr3 but it can indeed run world of warcraft on lowgraphics at 12 fps it can also run a full secondlife viewer low graphics at 7-10 fps which is very impressive for a tablet, my main reason for buying this is windows office for school use and basic internet access which it does very well no complaints so far except battery like is max 5 hours my m11xr3 can go 9 hours in comperison
@TalesOfWar 10ish for win 7, office isn't all that big, and what on earth do you think you would need a ton of more space for? This is not made to replace you main computer.
@S69NER Yes you can; Just have to buy a mSATA Drive (NewEgg has them for a good price) to replace the slower one inside. Also look on youtube for a video showing you how to open it. The RAM how ever can not be replaced.
Now this is what the iPad should be. None of this "you're only allowed to type with one hand while awkwardly trying to not drop me" bull. Finally a tablet that accepts the fact that sometimes you want to just put your portable computer on the table and type.
@karen31593 Yes you can. Windows 7 has a on screen keyboard; W500 has a feature tab on screen that you simply slide out with your finger then start typing.
Thumbs up for not sucking ad revenue from Linus by turning off AdBlock for his videos. You guys know that if you don't watch the ad, he doesn't get any money for the video. Support him if you love the videos so much.
I've seen quite a few reviews with people running windows 8 on theirs, so yes, I'm guessing you can install your own OS, and it doesn't have to be an official release.
Personally I would say this because it runs windows 7 and I don't have to put up with apple. also you can upgrade the mSATA drive and if you use windows 8 on this ive heard battery life and start up times are improved
Any game that requires DX11 is a "GO" for launch! I want it just to manage my servers and for college IT courses and also to show off a bit. :) I am going to make a virtual environment for Dark Linux and iDeneb (OSx Leopard).
yeah wanted to get an external ssd for it but i wanted more storage capacity cuz i also use my external hdd to save images of my laptop's hdd and my tablet's ssd so that was the deciding factor for me, my external hdd is a western digital my passport 1tb usb 3.0 its a good little hdd for the price.
I just ordered one of these from Wal*mart (d0t) com for $578, I know it's only 32gb ssd and about half of that is used by the os and installed interface, but oh yeah, it has an sd slot unlike my ipad 2, so I can put my itunes on a 32gb card. I will try to do a side by side comp video when i get it.
for the next video you should run office because thats why im buying it :D otherwise its just a big phone (what i think of other tablets) this tablet is for people who want to get work done also i think ill expand its memory with a 32gig class 10 sd can you show how the tablet preforms with a stylus?
In my opinion products like this one are a little bit rushed. I mean there are more and more leaks and info about Windows 8, and we're starting to see that Microsoft is strictly doing something similar to Apple. They're combining their desktop and mobile OS versions. What does it mean is that the Windows 8 would be more tablet friendly environment for sure. But i understand. Market laws are very strict - everybody need to chose their compromises
Thats a pretty sweet machine.. Hey linus, I have a gtx 560 ti, and want to upgrade my monitor, would you tell me to get an 120hz 3d ready monitor, or just a led full hd one? everyone is more than welcome to help me out! lol
I wish this tablet had integrated 3g and the ability to duel boot windows/android is there a way to upgrade the ssd size and upgrade the memory to 3-4GB
@crazy6omen Your comparing windows to those other tablets? doesn't make much sense. its more or less a laptop. so ask yourself, what do you need it for? Media consumption? get an Android/ iOS. Serious work? get windows. you already know the diff. although given the price i have to wounder about quality.
I just found a stack of these up in the attic of a school I work for. Was intrigued so looked them up. I was so glad that baby Linus was the first thing that popped up to shed some light on my mysterious stack of tablets. 😁 Thanks! Don't ever delete these old videos.

the best unboxing I ever seen ... Thank you man

OMG, Young Linus! 2020 what an evolution!
Awesome video, I brought one of these on eBay and I love it! Easily one of the best tablets of all tme :D
😀
@Millahtime windows seven is designed to work with touch displays, its built into all windows 7 machines
Holly throw back!
Good review! but you didn't go over the bluetooth 3.0 or touchscreen features; Not to mention how the tablet & keyboard locks together for carrying mode.
@storje77 You can use absolutely any software that runs in windows, so yes it runs microsoft office, photoshop etc.!
@konic40 I saw CNet's video of this tablet and they said a downfall to this tablet is you have to disconnect the keyboard before you fold it up like a net book. So no you cannot.
OH yess!! I've been waiting for this! THANKS LINUS!

Looks interesting, I wonder what the "real world" battery life is with typical use.

Thank you Linus for the power consumption indicator. Maybe some desktop idle and HDMI out figures would have been nice too :)
Cheers
@presleypresleyj No, but look at how fast the iPad switches orientations, and it's a tablet. I'm not comparing this to a desktop.
please do a follow up video of your feedback on this tablet
@TalesOfWar 10ish for win 7, office isn't all that big, and what on earth do you think you would need a ton of more space for? This is not made to replace you main computer.
I read that what you thought was the "ventilation port" is actually the speaker.
@S69NER Yes you can; Just have to buy a mSATA Drive (NewEgg has them for a good price) to replace the slower one inside. Also look on youtube for a video showing you how to open it. The RAM how ever can not be replaced.

@HOTTESTHERE There is a keyboard included, but it has 2 USB 2.0 ports. So it would be possible.
But I think it should have bluetooth
I was waiting for this one!
I've seen quite a few reviews with people running windows 8 on theirs, so yes, I'm guessing you can install your own OS, and it doesn't have to be an official release.
@xpwebcam It runs on Windows 7 OS; So any Program will work on it; W500 has two Webcams, Front & Back.
Personally I would say this because it runs windows 7 and I don't have to put up with apple. also you can upgrade the mSATA drive and if you use windows 8 on this ive heard battery life and start up times are improved
I hope Linus makes a video in a way to open this tablet and upgrading the SSD.
Looks lovely for sure!
@KriegsMaschine You can upgrade the SSD with a new mSATA Drive; Just not the RAM since its built into it.
nice work .. Thank you man
Very very nice unboxing
@Phenomental1ty Yes! if not all drivers or available at Acers website.
Any game that requires DX11 is a "GO" for launch! I want it just to manage my servers and for college IT courses and also to show off a bit. :) I am going to make a virtual environment for Dark Linux and iDeneb (OSx Leopard).
@jh3496 no only snaps together & locks with the tablet for carrying. its not made as a notebook.
Hello Great Video! Quick question. Being Windows is there a fan for the processor? If so, is it loud and can you feel the air out the exhaust? Thanks!
linus , you missed somethings
An APU( Accelerated Processing Unit)
combines
A DX 11 GPU + A Dual core CPU+A northbridge
yeah wanted to get an external ssd for it but i wanted more storage capacity cuz i also use my external hdd to save images of my laptop's hdd and my tablet's ssd so that was the deciding factor for me, my external hdd is a western digital my passport 1tb usb 3.0 its a good little hdd for the price.
linux... u suspose to show off the duo touchscreen, not the physical touch screen
4:52 the IBM G spot!
@storje77 It uses Windows 7 Home Edition; So it has everything.
Hey I've got a great idea. Let's use multitouch screen input with software that was designed for mouse input! That's bound to make consumers go CRAZY!
is this tablet worth of buying?
I just ordered one of these from Wal*mart (d0t) com for $578, I know it's only 32gb ssd and about half of that is used by the os and installed interface, but oh yeah, it has an sd slot unlike my ipad 2, so I can put my itunes on a 32gb card.

I think y'all were more worried about not showing the camera man in the gloss of the tablet than showing off the product.
I actually like this idea. You could use the keyboard if you want.
Ah good old Linus tech tips
Nice alternative to Tablet.. And Nice alternative to Laptop
@Devastationable there is an android version, but in my opinion, android pales in comparison to what windows can do
Man, a tablet would be SOOOO useful in uni. More windows 7 tablets need to come out and ....... cheaper :P
I think tablets and Netbooks were what AMD were aiming for with fusion
"I'm actually going to find a more action packed part --" *as baddass looking bunny raises bow and arrow--skips to guy getting hit with rocks*....>.
a pc and tablet all in one....im getting this
looks awesome, ill be buying one
for the next video you should run office because thats why im buying it :D
otherwise its just a big phone (what i think of other tablets)
this tablet is for people who want to get work done
also i think ill expand its memory with a 32gig class 10 sd
can you show how the tablet preforms with a stylus?
I want to see the Window experience index scores.
I thought we were about to see cameraman on the tablet screen again...
@LinusTechTips
Duude you need to unbox the Acer ICONIA 484G64ns too..!
It's a 14" dual screen tablet with a 2.6 Ghz i5 instead of a AMD Processor.. :P
How does this APU run different 3D application, like games and such ? Can you show us that? Would be awesome!
@kinmanyuen Wrong. This device screams for W8.
Hey linus!! i just bought one :D
@Anton338 depends on the decoder. it mostly is slower in YT as in an extra player with a better decoder than the Adobe one.
cost?
Pretty well beats a crapple iPad 2 anyway

Don't suppose you can close the tablet over the keyboard like a notebook/laptop?
@TheSlimeMachine yes, itunes for windows
Thats a pretty sweet machine..
Hey linus, I have a gtx 560 ti, and want to upgrade my monitor, would you tell me to get an 120hz 3d ready monitor, or just a led full hd one? everyone is more than welcome to help me out! lol
Who is watching in 2016?
I have this tablet with win10 and works fine
Pelacanyes hows the touch suite? did it work fine when you change the window?
yes, very fluid
Pelacanyes do u have the touchscreen driver... My touch screen doesnt work
is linus getting metro or did he just wake up and did a unboxing?
more powerful than apple tablet?
Linus, just for giggles could you show us a game or 3D Mark 11 running on this thing.
Linus, the center mouse is known as an "eraser head"
I wish this tablet had integrated 3g and the ability to duel boot windows/android
is there a way to upgrade the ssd size and upgrade the memory to 3-4GB
@RhinoFeed You are expecting desktop performance from a tablet?
Can it run crysis :)
@MrMicrosista probably not very well as minecraft runs purely on cpu and as this was almost at full from an hd video playing.
I like your shoes, Linus.
finally a tablet worth buying
If the battery is charging then the 36W power consumption is overrated.
Iconia A500 (Android) unboxing & review soon?
which one would you pick from acer iconia w500, acer iconia a500, samsung galaxy tab 10.1v and ipad 2 ?
@crazy6omen Your comparing windows to those other tablets? doesn't make much sense. its more or less a laptop. so ask yourself, what do you need it for? Media consumption? get an Android/ iOS. Serious work? get windows. you already know the diff. although given the price i have to wounder about quality.
@LittleLegion The questioan is, WILL IT BLEND?
@Blauwebek I like my dells with the bob included. no unbobing plz.
its called track point, and lenovo still uses it thank god
@126sox Around minimum 6 hours!
the power consumption aint right.... its charging the battery and you got a loss of power at the charger so it is less then 36 watt around 25
What's a reasonable price used for one of these?
hope to get more Linus CAT updates
Is windows even suitable for tablet use?
Linus, I would love to see an Asus transformer review.
That think is track point :) (IBM -> Lenovo, Dell use them today ) :)
How would this tablet handle programs like Cubase 5, FruityLoops, Lightroom 4, Photoshop cs5.5 ect?
who is watching this video in 2020 ( 9 years later ) ?
which do u recommend? this or ipad 2?
This all unboxing is cool, I want to have a job like you, Linus. What do I have to do? :D
