In games like this your rank isn't just your rank really - it's a rank made by you and those you're matched with. Especially in Valorant where win/loss seems to be the deciding factor between + and - points 100% of the time, despite the win/loss depending on 4 other people, not just you.

I personally wasn't that good, but I played with a friend at the time who was obviously better than me by a significant margin. He was always above me on the scoreboard, better ideas, better teamwork, better positioning, better ability use, just better. Yet he would be at most 1-2 ranks above me at any given time. He still hasn't ranked up after months of consistently being high on scoreboards, low deaths, and multiple round winning plays. He's contacted support a handful of times and they have said exactly what I just described - your rank depends massively on your team. They play it off as you needing better team work skills, but all of the teamwork skills in the world never going to help you if your team just won't work with you. Refusal to talk in chat, some, not even having VC on - is alone enough to create a instant loss that cannot be avoided. Yet people who were trying their best and showing excellent skills themselves will get down points because the one guy who refused to work with them. It has gotten better, of course, but essentially being a smurf for weeks whilst you gradually get a few points up every now and again isn't fun for anyone involved. It's why I don't even touch this genre anymore without being able to make a team that's mostly people I know (that, and most randoms are just not fun to play with, skill level aside)
