The lever is not encased in glass because ready access is needed to get in and out of the silo. If it were an emergency release then glass would make sense, but as it's seemingly the only way to control the door it isn't enclosed.
In fact, since the lever is the only way to open the doors there probably should be some kind of emergency access -- perhaps one encased in glass -- in case something happens to the lever. In this OSHA survey I will-

The blue laser and the tripmine usually keep pointers to or IDs of each other so they can activate, move, or delete each other, but somehow the tripmine was removed without cleaning up its laser so the place the laser was connected to was taken by another game object. Then, that new game object didn't know it needed to clean up the laser so when it got deleted its place was taken by a third game object, and so on.

After you're finished with this Half Life, I think it'd be cool if you did the spinoffs (Blue Shift, Opposing Force) and even Decay, which was originally locked to the PlayStation release of Half Life but was ported to computer by modders! Decay is special because it's a coop Half-Life, which I think would make it really cool for this setting where you have a lifelong fan and a relative newcomer.
