- In an earlier interview, former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer said that women are terrible chess players, should be kept out of intellectual affairs and stay at home cleaning. In this interview from 1972, shortly before his World Championship against Boris Spassky, he seems to have changed his opinion somewhat.

Well in a lot of sports the competitions require licenses or some kind of organizational backing to compete at the pro levels, whereas in chess there's no hard division between different levels of competition, its mostly just fide rating. That's probably what he means

If you’re thinking of that older clip where he talks about women and chess, these things are not contradictory. «Chess is wide open» and that women are welcome in chess does not mean that they are as good at it as men are. Clearly they aren’t.

I am of course not saying that all men are better than all women or some such nonsense. Many women are much better than I could ever be, for instance. But I think you know what I mean.
They are both the same opinion, no change required. Chess is an open sport and women are welcome to play, they just are not very good. Very few women make it into the top ranks. The top ranking woman is way down the list with many many men ahead of her. Don't get me wrong, the top few women can probably beat the average guy, but the top men destroy the top women.

This is a good opportunity to see that it is okay to change opinions over time. Its like seeing a politician have a different opinion from 15 years ago and saying "LOOK THEY ARE INCONSISTENT" when in reality people change their views overtime. This is good!

Specifically at the time this interview was recorded, Fischer was a good 100+ points higher rated than world number 2, Spassky (Spassky was in the high 2600's while Fischer was approaching 2800). To assert that the best female player Nona (~2300) was 'better' than Spassky let alone Fischer would be extremely stupid.

i don't see any change of opinion, he was asked different questions, and even in the earlier video he said he'd have no problem with women playing chess, he was not asked wether women are good chess players, like the other interview, not sure why people are praising him and making up stories about how everyone changes... theres some opinions that you can change with experience, but the opinion that women are worse at men in almost everything will only be more reinforced with experience

@@taza257 Yes it is completely out of context. It popped up both as a meme and as some sort of showcase or branding that the best chess player, and through that chess and current chess players, are misogynistic.
But that's not true. Bobby was very evidently just repeating what he had heard at the time and didn't have any of his own thoughts in the first interview.
At age 19, only 1 year into being considered a legal adult (and we know how feeble that metric actually is) yeah he said some misogynistic shit in an interview.
But you see interviews of him only a couple years later when he's seen some women do well in chess, which is basically all he cared about, and suddenly his tune has completely shifted to praising them and their abilities in chess.
To then later go on to be one of the mentors for the greatest female player in history, even living with her and her family at one point.
The views he expressed in the singular interview and it's being showcased now are completely absent of the context that this was not an accurate depiction of what Bobby thought about women and women in chess for the overwhelming majority of his life even just a couple years later.
That's very important context given the ideas trying to be argued from that original interview broken up into clips all over RUclips, Twitter, etc.

In intellectual matters, women and men are for the most part equal. In physicality that is not the case. So chess is one of the sports where women can be just as good like men are. But what seperates men and women from intelectuality, is how we differ from being able reason and make jugdements about our choises. To get to the top level at chess you need to start before you turn 18. There are no grandmasters who started playing after 18. As a result, if your parents don’t make you play when you’re a kid, it’s probably not going to work out. Until the past decade, parents would only encourage their male children to play chess since it was seen as a masculine activity based on its relation to war and tactics. The game itself and the organizations that moderate competition aren’t sexist, it’s simply the fact that chess has historically been seen as a male sport. In the next 100 years, my guess is that the gender gap will decrease somewhat as this narrative is much less prevalent.

@@yesyouareright9800 Women are as good at chess as children, however many social circumstances discourage women from playing chess. Percentage wise women are represented in the rankings fairly well. We simply haven’t seen many wcc contending women because so little women pursue chess professionally. That attitude has been rapidly changing and we will see another one soon.
@@Foxtrot6624 nope they are not, and social “problems” are not an excuse, if you stay away from chess just because you think people will judge you then you will never get even a fide master title with that mentality, men are better at chess both mentally and genetically
