You can slip stitch in any random stitch.
how do i make it if i want it bigger on the spine? like for a bigger book
It's the same pattern regardless of the book size. You have to try it on the book every few rows for it to take proper shape.
hii! great video, loved the tutorial, thanks for it. i wanted to know why make sticthes in the back bumps? also does it change a lot making DC instead of HDC?
I made stitches in the back bumps so that there wouldn't be gaps. If you're going to use DC, use a smaller hook. I have a similar tutorial on my page using DC only. You can follow that one instead.

What size is the yarn? For 5mm hook, do we need a 5mm thick yarn? Or the three ply simple one?
Just use whatever yarn you have. The size doesn't matter.
