boygenius have been named one of BBC Radio 6 Music's Artists of the Year. This special accolade celebrates success stories of 2023 and tips the stars for 2024. The list showcases both legends and breaking artists, illustrating a diverse selection of acts from a range of genres who have been championed across our daytime and specialist shows.
boygenius are Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker & Lucy Dacus. The indie supergroup have had a hugely successful year with their debut album ‘The Record’ garnering 5* reviews across the board, it went on to chart at no 1 in the UK album charts. A sold out run of UK shows including headlining Gunnersbury Park and 2 Piece Hall dates in Halifax, as well as landmark US shows at Madison Square Gardens and the Hollywood Bowl. They also worked with Kristen Stewart who directed a short film with them. We’re thrilled that the band recorded an exclusive live set for us when they were over in the UK.

Listening to boygenius is spending the entire runtime of a song going “no, she’s the best voice in the band… wait Nevermind, she’s the best… wait”
Julien has the most versatile voice of the 3 of them I think, but both Lucy and Phoebe have singing voices with a lot of character and individuality, meaning there are contexts where each of them are best suited which is so cool.
I love them all but it's definitely Lucy that wins on this song. Her solo part near the end gives me chills every time.
Lucy has the strongest voice in my opinion. So consistent
They're all vocally so different and individual, but they're all such great compliments to each other -- which I think is a pretty good metaphor for them as people :D

I got chills when Julien screamed sang the last "Always An Angel, Never A God" and the hairs on my head stood up all the way through the last verse until the song ended. The boys always sing with conviction but the end of this performance was even more.

Juliens scream is great and emotional, but it's Lucy's voice, lyrics and singing at the end that brings tears to my eyes.

I really think Julien is the heart and soul of Boygenius. She's the best musician among them, arguably the best songwriter, and as you said she's no slouch as a singer either.

Couldn’t appreciate each of these talented musicians more as solo artists. But, when they commune, collaborate, perform together it is at a measure of such meaningful excellence I have trouble explaining, expressing, but not celebrating! I am often accused of being a lyrics snob, but well phrased words are a passion of mine and too often go overlooked. I also have several talented guitarists in my family. So, superb lyricism, and excellent guitar skills, are 2 areas high on my list of priorities for those considered best Musical Artists. These guys have it ALL and more in spades! Their abilities to harmonize w/each other so beautifully is just musical icing for the genius cake! Any official recognition they receive is beyond well deserved!🎉

I've commented elsewhere that I've fallen as hard for their vocal and guitar blend as I did for Crosby Stills & Nash in the summer of 1969. Supergroup doesn't begin to describe how good they are together.
