- The Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators each have a lot to prove after disappointing 2023 football seasons. These in-state rivals will meet on August 31st at The Swamp in Gainesville to open up their 2024 seasons. Miami has been aggressive in the transfer portal, adding standouts like Cam Ward, Damien Martinez and Sam Brown to their offense. The Gators have made some portal additions but will have continuity at QB with Graham Mertz for a second straight season.

I hear everyone worrying about the Hurricane Defense. Other than 3 games last year our D was above average but at times really good. And that was with key Dlineman missing most of the year. This year the defense is more talented and much deeper. In addition, this is Lance Guidrey's 2cd season with Miami. This years D will be lightyears ahead of last years D heading into game one. Honestly, we are gonna blow this Gator team out. 21 point victory. The coaches and players arent exactly saying it but if Ward has the season we hope he has, 13-0 and a 1st round bye in the playoff is what they expect. Lets go Canes
I think the concern is the secondary, and that concern still exists. It's definitely helped by the front 7 being more than capable of pressuring opposing QBs before they have an opportunity to test the secondary.

@@RJ1LE77 Lance Guidrey coaches the safeties Specifically. Powell is a baller. Let's be honest with ourselves, Cam had an average year last year. Misch Powell will be better at safety in 2024 than Cam was in 2023. Guidrey said throughout spring how much Jadan Harris has improved. Markeith Williams decided to stay and not enter the portal for a reason. Coaches wanted him to stay. Lastly, by the midpoint of the season Zaquan Patterson may likely be starting next to Powell. He's that talented.

I think this game is closer than a lot of Canes fans are thinking, but I agree with Donno this thing has the makings of a shootout. Brandon seems to believe fitting in veteran pieces into an existing staff is more concerning than an entire team learning a new defensive staff. Both are definitely problematic, but I definitely feel like Ward has the advantage here. As long as he's motivated to learn the book and work on chemistry, the line is there and built, the wide receivers are there and built, RB room took a hit, but major players are there, and Damien's transition (again as Donno said) should be much easier at that position. Defensively Miami has a ton of questions in the secondary, and I do think Mertz is more than capable of taking his game to another level.
I've been saying this since I saw Ward was coming in and dove into the number. PFF blocking grades are 20 points better at Miami that Washinton State. Their leading rusher had 321 yards with 3.6ypc. Even with just Allen and Fletcher that was still more yards and more YPC than Ward had as help, behind an offensive line that's measurably significantly better. Martinez just changes the conversation from a much improved Miami team, to one that can win the ACC (on paper).
It's still a road game so the first two drives (offense and defense) will dictate a lot about how this game is going to go. On paper it feels like both teams are likely scoring, and that the O/U should probably be closer 55 than the like 45 I think they're gonna set it at. Could be, though, that Miami does a Miami and we lose like 42-7....that's definitely still a possibility.

The positions (running back and receiver and a grad transfer veteran DTackle run stopper) Miami filled in spring portal are positions that a team can plug and play, if it was a whole new offensive line that had not played together, he’d have a point. First game of the year is tricky, because it’s the first game of the year. If this was the second game, I would be much more confident.
