For me, it depends on on the type of music and tunings. For gentle, meditative worship or slow, restful music, the flatboard is often my choice. If I'm playing "fun" music and need volume, or music begging for "wah-wah and/or vibrato," I'll go for the hollow. Also, my flatboard has softer tines and is easier for glissando. My hollow has tines a little stiffer and a little further apart, making it easier to play in certain styles and patterns. Different styles of music invite different kinds of kalimbas and tunings. I recently got a 17 keys black walnut kalimba from hluru, it's flatboard and sloped. No dead tines, nice resonance and feels really nice in hands too. It's my favorite kalimba now. I really loved my kimi acrylic kalimba until this one.
Since the creation of this video, Hluru and a small handful of smaller manufacturers have made Kalimba's with a bottom resonator hole. It is the middle of the road option between the front hole and solid panel. The tines on the edges also resonate better on a bottom hole style compared to the front hole. The front hole style on smaller brands tend to have the top two tines on each side (4 total) to be "dead".

2:02 It's called a wah wah effect because it's not actually vibrato. The wah wah effect is not limited to the kalimba, it is also applicable to an electric guitar via a wah pedal. As you know, the electric guitar also has vibrato capability which sounds very different from the wah pedal's effects because it's actually vibrato. The wah wah effect is characterized by a fluctuation in available upper-register harmonics. A helpful analogy would be singing with vibrato (vibrato) vs singing and covering your mouth with your hand periodically (wah wah). Vibrato is strictly limited to a fluctuation in pitch, which mind you is possible on kalimbas as well. Instead of using the sound hole/holes, just pick a hand to hold the kalimba with and rotate the kalimba back and forth (you could get the same effect by moving the kalimba up and down with two hands although that would be more inconvenient and slow). This simulates what is known as the Doppler Effect so that when the kalimba moves the sound waves in the air move around so that the waves at the direction of the kalimbas movement are sped up, and the ones opposite are slowed down, which creates vibrato after rotating back and forth.

I would love to hear you on the kazoo some time 😄
@@TipsKalimba Fun fact: If you go to my channel, and look at "playlists",
There's one with "kazoo" in its name, and that's where you can hear this. 🙂
Let me do that just now👀
I saw the internet friend video! Oh my! I genuinely enjoyed that. And the sound of the kazoo is so distinct. i think i might get one 😄
@@TipsKalimba
Out of all the videos in the playlist, that's the best one to watch
To hear the kazoo showcased, followed by the cover that I did
Of "You Are My Sunshine", which is further down the list a few spots.
I think you'd enjoy having a kazoo. 😁 Thanks for checking out that vid!
It's the easiest non-percussion instrument to learn, one of the cheapest too,
But most people don't play it as "sweetly" as I played it for those songs.
No matter the style you decide to play it, though, what is really fun to do
Is find opportunities to hear a melody, take out the kazoo, and play along. 😃
momma robin meron po bang flatboard naka engrave po?
budget ko po mga 500- pesos at sana po may accessories at case
I want to start playing Kalimba, and i want a good Kalimba that i can use for a lot of time, so something good for beginner/intermediate.
Any advice on a particular model? 😁
You csn watch our playlist on unboxings to decide which brand you want :)
@@TipsKalimba Done that, but i don't know what to buy ahahah
From what i've seen, i'll buy a 17 keys hollow kalimba, but i have to decide the brand ahah
What country are you from?:)
@@TipsKalimba I am from Italy 😬

I love to play Kalimbas I have two hollow Kalimbas & two flat Kalimbas, Great for Experimental Music
Very interesting!
Thank you for thinking so 😄
I have a 19 key flatboard...but I definitely would have acrylic and hollow Kalimbas when I get better at playing.
Oh that's so cool! where did you get your 19 key Kalimba?
@@TipsKalimba @Tip's Kalimba hi Momma Robin! Since I'm just dipping my toes in the water, (with the hopes of navigating my way deeper) I bought mine from an online shop that starts with the letter "e", whose partner is a commercial online store that starts with S (wink wink). My 19 key is unbranded and unmarked, clean Mahogany. :-)
Hahahhaha! I love how you explained that. *Wink wink* 😆😄
@@TipsKalimba @Tip's Kalimba Momma Robin, they're not getting a free endorsement from me... it's my way of showing respect to your sponsors...ehem! baka naman! wahahaha! joke only! 😄
Thank you !
I really wanna play kalimba but shipping to my country is so expensive
I got a flatboard and I’m very happy with its sound. The thing I didn’t realize is that it is in B major, so it is hard to find tutorials to play along with, and also hard to play along with other instruments.
Yes! I made the same mistake 😂
@@biancas4756 can u help me get the common one . what should I get?
@@shery9131 get one that is tuned to C note
I really want to buy a Kalimba, but the problem is that shipping to my country is expensive:(
Are you from India? One of my Kalimba seller friend did mentioned this. I think it's 50USD?
I'm so glad u noticed me hehe❤️I'm from morocco
Of course! Wow! I want to visit there someday. 😍
You can try Gokalimba, quokka Kalimba, or the flatboards of kalimbera. :)
I have the same kalimbas my 1st kalimba generic hallow kalimba and my 3rd kalimba flatboard budget kalimba ❤️❤️ but i love these flatboard kaso it is so gentle to play than hallow

Flatboard for me 😍
Yaaas! The juicy end tines. 😍
the hollow is full and thicc with more harmonics. The flat one is smooth and clean.

Flat board & Acrylic.
Gecko flatboooooardd !!!! 😆❤️
Hahaha yes forever numbah one daw 😆❤️‼️
Todas me suenan con un volumen muy parecido, la de agujero tiene un volumen, pero un poco mas, tampoco es exagerado su volumen.
