"EVEN YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO PLAY" Видеоклипы
For me, it depends on on the type of music and tunings. For gentle, meditative worship or slow, restful music, the flatboard is often my choice. If I'm playing "fun" music and need volume, or music begging for "wah-wah and/or vibrato," I'll go for the hollow. Also, my flatboard has softer tines and is easier for glissando. My hollow has tines a little stiffer and a little further apart, making it easier to play in certain styles and patterns. Different styles of music invite different kinds of kalimbas and tunings. Hence, both a flatboard and a hollow are a nice luxury to save up for if you'd enjoy different approaches to different genres of music.
Thanks Robin for another helpful and well-presented review! 😊🙏🤎
Mary you are becoming more insightful on the kalimba. I love it. I totally agree with you on how it does depend on the music being played. 😍
@@TipsKalimba Thank you Robin. I really enjoy playing and learning! Recently I put my hollow into "Middle Eastern" tuning, and am really enjoying getting acquainted with this unique and lovely tuning. It loves the hollow kalimba best! :-). (CREDIT: The "Middle Eastern" tuning for kalimba is a creation of Mark Holdaway, owner of kalimbamagic.com and who plays kalimba in so many different genres and with so much talent and heart.)
Thank you, Mary L! 🙏🏼
I recently bought myself two acrilic kalimbas since they have cute designs and since I was just starting I thought quieter is better but now that I get more confident with it I was thinking I should get a wooden one... Both sound interesting I'm not sure which kind I want
Woooòoo
The wooden hollow from quokka is good with no dead tines. She made a review on it. 💜
I recently got a 17 keys black walnut kalimba from hluru, it's flatboard and sloped. No dead tines, nice resonance and feels really nice in hands too. It's my favorite kalimba now. I really loved my kimi acrylic kalimba until this one.

Oooh! I think someone sent me one of this Kalimba to review. Hearing this from you gets me excited to try it out 😍❤️
I’ve been so many of your videos and I am so excited to say that I’ve just purchased my first kalimba❤️Thank you so much for all the tips and information, I can’t wait to start playing🥰
Which one?
Hello from a newbie who just discovered your channel and has been watching lots of videos!
As a string player looking for my first kalimba, I was convinced that of course the best kalimbas must be hollow, since my other instruments are hollow. Thank you for sharing how each type is special and unique! Since I would be recording at some point, I still love the volume of the hollow. Buuut, an even and lovely tine sound could be worth the extra care needed in recording... But again there is the vibrato... I can see how people usually end up with more than one kalimba! 😂
I'm definitely leaning towards the dreamy peacefulness of the Ling Tings whichever way I go! Thanks so much for your videos, and for the messages of encouragement. God has used you to bless my heart in a hard season. 💖
You channel inspired me to buy a kalimba and have started to learn, your videos are really useful and straight-forward. I love your channel!
Wow! This really made my day. Thank you for expressing this. 🥰
Thank you for your gentle blessing, Ms Robin. 👍💗🙏😁✝🌻 Happy Summer!!!
I have a hollow kalimba, and after watching this i think i love them both hollow and flat!
Ooh really?! That's so cool to know. I think you'll enjoy the variety of each, Gey. 😄
Since the creation of this video, Hluru and a small handful of smaller manufacturers have made Kalimba's with a bottom resonator hole. It is the middle of the road option between the front hole and solid panel. The tines on the edges also resonate better on a bottom hole style compared to the front hole. The front hole style on smaller brands tend to have the top two tines on each side (4 total) to be "dead".
Thank you! The Flatboard sounded a lot like the Acrylic Kalimba, I thought. I like them all, but am researching before getting one! ♥️🌹🌿
Thanks so much for your video. I've now decided my first kalimba will be a flatboard 🙂
I'm in love with the full bodied sound of the hollow Kalimba, but the hollow Kalimba I trialled at the music store today had dead-sounding end tines like tou said! I'm intruiged that that is fixable!
Thanks a lot ❤️
Lots of love to you
Edit - i will go for flatboard thank you again
Congratulations on your channel growth! :)
My first kalimba was hollow, but my favorite is flatboard and what I mostly have now. I like for the tines to play!
Aww thank you so much!
Oh we are the same! I just knew about hollow kalimbas i think after around 8 months of owning my first hollow. 😆
@@TipsKalimba I did so much research and thought I'd like the hollow wood ones best, but . . . I guess I had to find out the hard way! 😊
I already ordered my Kalimba and your advice was very helpful in helping me decide. Thank you very much!
That's awesome! Which one did you choose? :)
@@TipsKalimba The Kalimbera flat Kalimba (I saw your evaluation about it).
Oh you are going to like it for sure!
I brought a flat board kalimba because it had a cute design. My kalimba arrived earlier, it had nice quality and was good. I noticed why the tune was so high and quiet so I watched one of your videos. And thankfully, it's better now but I think I would want the hollow one better. So remember to make sure and decide carefully what kalimba you would want to have.
I remember watching all your older videos until I reached a decision :) it was the flatboard for me because of its sweet sound... i had both wooden and acrylic, but gave up on the acrylic because of its weight and the effort i put in to make it sound louder. Im biased on the flatboard, but i heard some covers using the hollow, and i guess it depends on what type of music you'll play! Certain genres work better with either. Really depends in your personality and style
Exactly! Well explained, Fiel. 😄❤️
I just got my kalimba ang your videos actually helped me a lot!!!
Wow, i'm just so happy to know that it did! congratulations! 😍
I love both for their own reasons :) each of my kalimbas have their place :)
I know right! they do have their own individual uniqueness huh? so glad you get to experience both. 🥰
I rarely come across such sweet individuals on RUclips nowadays. I love watching your videos, they always bring me a lot of joy
Awww that has got to be one of the kindest words i have ever received. Thank you so much.
Did your flatboard arrived already? 😄
@@TipsKalimba Yes it did! :) My flatboard arrived a few days ago now. I enjoy it very much! My first impression of it was actually not the best, sadly. It had a very very strong smell to it, the tines were filled with greasy fingerprints and some of the tines have some of the worst buzzing I've come across :/ I have fixed the buzzing a little bit, but it can't really go away. Other than that, I love it. It takes some getting used to because the individual tines are much wider than my other kalimbas, though :)
Oh, that's very unusual. But I'm glad you are still keeping a postive outlook on it. ☺️
@@TipsKalimba Yeah, I was a bit surprised. But after a clean-up I'm enjoying it very much :D
I read your comment again, and i had s nice giggle because the scent you smell was the aroma of the camphorwood. I personally love it. But that's something subjective. (Some like it, some don't, and that's totally fine ❤️🥰)
Awww so glad you are enjoying it 😄❤️
Wooah! Thank you for this atee. 🤩
Will let my students watch this. It'll be helpful for them to choose which kalimba to get.🥰♥️
Thank you so much joy my dear. 😍
I went dumpster diving and i got new hollow kalimba someone toss out. Im totally new and im exited to play. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials.
Thankyou!! After watching I am leaning towards the Flatboard❤❤
Still my favorite too :)
Thank you for this. I ordered two Kalimbas and they arrived this week. The first, an acrylic cat kalimba sounds lovely and has no dead keys. I love it but it is very soft and quiet. The hollow one sounds great in the middle but there are several dead keys.
Is there one brand of hollow kalimba that is less likely to have dead keys?
Thank you, and bless you too 🙂
Your voice is so soothing to me I watch you all day also I’m new!🤗
Awww that's so kind of you to say 😄
I'm looking to buy my first Kalimba. I'm still undecided even after seeing this video 😆 I want both of them in one. I want a resonating sound with volume.
bought the exact same flatboard just because i was on a budget 😂 but i really loved how it sounded compared to hollow kalimbas
Agree! It's a surprise how good it is 😍
Hi, which flatboard kalimba is she using in this video? :) In case it already was listed, I must have missed it
Flatboard all the way! 😻💜
Thank you for enlightening us ate,
Ay mommy robin na pala!! 👶💜
Hahaha! Yes my dear, momma na si ate nyo. 😘❤️
I have both. The volume in the flatboard is lower but not that much. Both of them have fully resonating tines but I prefer the flatboard. I haven't experienced any buzzing or weird sounds with it. What I like about the hollow is the wa wa sound effect. Overall, I'm team flatboard.
Great observation, Connie! You are so on point with what you said. 😄
Me realizing your from the Philippines! Yay!! Personally I would like to buy the Hollow
Great video!😊
oh so i get the hollow ones now i know why is it too loud to play and i love it so much ate!
Yes!! So glad you are loving it my dear 😄
I think the hallow one is suit for me.😊 I love the louder one .😊❤️
I love the flat one...but there is a characteristic na meron sa hollow hahaha...i love them both
So can relate! Nung nakahanap ako nung walang deadtine na hollow? Nako di ko na alam alin ung mas okay para sakin. 😆

your videos are very helpful for someone who's planning to buy a kalimba! i recently wanted to purchase the acrylic kalimba because i absolutely love the design but i don't think i can play comfortably because of the weight, i'm planning to buy a flatboard kalimba instead since i tend to play softer types of musics. do you have any suggestions for a flatboard kalimba?
Oh i love flatboards! Mmm do you have a budget range?

Awww thank you for always sharing your love my dear sister 🥰❤️
So Robin do they make a Kalimba with the tines tuned like a piano
Hello! Have you tried hluru hollow kalimba that have the hole at bottom? I can't choose between a spruce flatboard, acacia hollow(front hole), and a rosewood or acacia hollow(hole at the bottom)
And also camphorwood flatboard?
Ma'am would you suggest flat board kalimba for greater resonance,my preference is resonance and not loudness.
You play "to make you feel my love - Adele" omg i love it! Im a Daydreamer
Greetings from Brazil😁🇧🇷 I'm starting now in the world of Kalimbas, and looking for the best one to buy. Among the flats, I liked the sound of the lingting and the Ammoon. Already in the huts, I think Gecko and Zani are good, which one do you recommend?
Hi! Oh i have been away from the kalimba world for around 3 years. These other brands are new to me. Have you selected any of these already? :)
I have been thinking to try a flat board kalimba for quite a while coz I see many people use it and have good comments on the sound quality. So I just received my first flat board kalimba today, it's truly lovely and sweet but I think I need some time to get use to the smaller volume since I am used to the volume of a hollow kalimba. Which do you prefer, Momma Robin?
Oooh since i just use it at home i too prefer flstboards more. :) But wow, congratulations! 😍
I just want my (hollow) one to arrive! :(

I love to play Kalimbas I have two hollow Kalimbas & two flat Kalimbas, Great for Experimental Music
if I want to play it at night, and not disturb my neighbors, will the hollow one be too loud even if I play it lightly? I really think I'll like the sound of the hollow ones, but I like the flat board too.
Do you know which one is lighter and easier to pluck?

I would love to have a flatboard. I got my first kalimba innthe Spring and it is a hollow, but it really is quite loud and annoys my dog! Also I'm a bit uncomfortable playing it when the kids are in bed. So last week I received an acrylic one and love it so much! But I would love to have a flatboard too! How many kalimbas are too many kalimbas for one person? 😅
Hahahaha! I love it then! I know right? I have so many kalimbas sent tp me, which is why in the coming days I'll be giving 3/4 of them to the kalimba community ❤️
@@TipsKalimba 3/4 of them, wow! That is so generous of you!
I bought hollow kalimba and it has tine problems. I wish I knew this before buying one. I think I'd like the flat board kalimba more since it rarely has tine problems.
I ordered the hollow one and it arrived today(my very first Kalimba) the sound is clear and loud though the right end E°° sounds kinda dead ;D
2:02 It's called a wah wah effect because it's not actually vibrato. The wah wah effect is not limited to the kalimba, it is also applicable to an electric guitar via a wah pedal. As you know, the electric guitar also has vibrato capability which sounds very different from the wah pedal's effects because it's actually vibrato. The wah wah effect is characterized by a fluctuation in available upper-register harmonics. A helpful analogy would be singing with vibrato (vibrato) vs singing and covering your mouth with your hand periodically (wah wah). Vibrato is strictly limited to a fluctuation in pitch, which mind you is possible on kalimbas as well.
Instead of using the sound hole/holes, just pick a hand to hold the kalimba with and rotate the kalimba back and forth (you could get the same effect by moving the kalimba up and down with two hands although that would be more inconvenient and slow). This simulates what is known as the Doppler Effect so that when the kalimba moves the sound waves in the air move around so that the waves at the direction of the kalimbas movement are sped up, and the ones opposite are slowed down, which creates vibrato after rotating back and forth.
Oh thank you for this info. You're awesome! 😁
Ang cute naman ng flatboard na yan. I bought the same kalimba, and before I checked it out I saw your review about sa product.
Yes! Parang chocolate bar ano? Super sulit sa price pa! 😍

@@TipsKalimba Malapit na ate ❤️😍 Excited na ako.
Which one do you like best, robin ?
I personally like the flatboard more just because it's more gentle.🥰❤️
I like flatboard
the hollow is full and thicc with more harmonics. The flat one is smooth and clean.
I like both types, but I don't think I'd play outdoors,
So the volume would be less of a concern for me,
And you can't accidentally drop something inside flatboards...
Although I do think my personality tends to be more "happy"...
But I do have a kazoo to balance out the kalimba's chimes,
Plus I'd prefer to have an instrument without stiff end tines,
So... if I could only acquire one kalimba like these, I think I would pick
A regular wooden flatboard kalimba... or maybe one that's chromatic. 😁
Aah great choice, Jaichbinhier!
I would love to hear you on the kazoo some time 😄
@@TipsKalimba Fun fact: If you go to my channel, and look at "playlists",
There's one with "kazoo" in its name, and that's where you can hear this. 🙂
Let me do that just now👀
I saw the internet friend video! Oh my! I genuinely enjoyed that. And the sound of the kazoo is so distinct. i think i might get one 😄
@@TipsKalimba
Out of all the videos in the playlist, that's the best one to watch
To hear the kazoo showcased, followed by the cover that I did
Of "You Are My Sunshine", which is further down the list a few spots.
I think you'd enjoy having a kazoo. 😁 Thanks for checking out that vid!
It's the easiest non-percussion instrument to learn, one of the cheapest too,
But most people don't play it as "sweetly" as I played it for those songs.
No matter the style you decide to play it, though, what is really fun to do
Is find opportunities to hear a melody, take out the kazoo, and play along. 😃
