The dev left that note to explain his artistic decision with the game: "Hi, this is doekuramori. I'm the creator of The Citadel. Thank you for playing and your feedback on the game. I will try in the future to make games with more variety and the feedback in mind. However there is one thing that is absolutely wrong. I am not guro artist. This is not a guro fetish game. Lately there have been many comments accusing me of being a nasty person and attacking me. This isn't true. I am not guro artist, I don't make guro works or doujin. My interests are Touhou, Lost in Abyss and biomechanism. I also very like dark themes and games that have dark themes and oppressive feeling. I hope you can see it now. Not guro. I am interested in biomechanism, like how people will merge with machines in the future. And what kind of conception that will make, like Ghost In The Shell meets H.R. Giger. It's strange aesthetic and I think creates interesting image. But it's not guro. The Citadel features gibbing and violence because I identified that as a big part of the aesthetic of classic retro shooter. Ultra violence. Because I draw anime style, I interpret that through the way I draw. It is not "fetish". It is inspired by those old games, and also newer games which are influence by that old style, like Shadow Warrior 2. I was quite interested by the gibbing and gore system in Shadow Warrior because it's like how old brutality meets new technology that allows use of physics with gib system. Again, not because it is sexual. I am proud of what I achieve with The Citadel game, even if it is not perfect, but now I receive many comments and mean messages after watching video from people accusing me of being a dangerous freak who only wants to hurt girls. I've had similar experiences with horror media before, where I couldn't tell if the violence was supposed to be horrifying or gratifying. For a non-sexual example, Black Mirror has more than a few episodes featuring characters delighting in inflicting sci-fi tortures on "deserving" victims. Great for horror, but makes those episodes very uncomfortable to watch.

Definitely recommend Beyond Citadel, even just the demo is peak, got way more story, becomes even more of a gun sim, even more down bad, pretty much just an enhancement in all ways.
the citadel isn't guro, or ero guro as it's frequently shortened to. guro, coming from english, means grotesque, while ero guro means erotic *and* grotesque. the content on display for the most part is simply guro, grotesque. the developer has gone on record saying he is *not* an ero guro artist, but a guro artist. the distinction is important because it's clear that while the gore in the game is grotesque, it's not meant to be taken in an erotic fashion. the only explicitly sexual content in the game that i've actually been able to see as erotic or suggestive at all is the main character's-- Martyr's --design and the final boss, which are two bare-skin girls without any genitalia or mammary glands. that's pretty much it. the game was review-bombed due to this misconception on release, especially after GmanLive's video on the game.
@@ground5295 Idk man, he's literally posted rule 34 of his game on twitter that's pretty suggestive of that. Sucks that the game got review bombed though, especially since if I'm remembering correctly, Gman was positive about it overall.
I had a little chat with the creator of this strange masterpiece. He was a humble regular guy except for the fact he's constantly struggling between ruining his own mind with wretched world building and pure fun gameplay for people. That's the kind of guy I want to let them making indie games on the dimest corner of Steam.
I subscribed instantly to this mf when I noticed he actually put effort into knowing what in the hell is he talking about when rambling about shit that is relevant but not directly related to the game. Extra effort pays off.
Rly refreshing to see someone who actually explains stuff, very interesting vid about one of my fav shooters. Played through it this year, lowkey hyped of beyond citadel cuz it looks even crazier
Played through the game a week ago after having owned it for a few years and then saw this video pop up, reinforcing the idea that we live in a simulation. Anyways, good video and fun game. The pump-action shotgun with the choke upgrade is peak, absolute prime shotgun material.
The Dev themselves came out and said its not a guro game, and not to buy it if thats what you want (because apparently guro fans are upset the game wasnt nsfw ENOUGH).
I played through this game with my door open because I had a housemate who was into anime and retro shooters. Guess which boss I was fighting when he walked past?
Hey, I've never really watched a smaller channel before, but I've started watching your videos and they are really good, here's hoping that you start getting the views you deserve.
I don’t get why fetishes revolving around physical and emotional devastation are so popular… in this day and age all my fantasies are of genuine love and comfort. I used to think I was weird for it but I guess I should count myself lucky.
3:22 Apparently there's a huge stigma in Japan for shooter games, its also one of the reasons why the on-foot sections of Star Fox Assault were not received well there, as well as numerous FPS series like Halo or COD never reaching the popularity there they did in the States.
Don't remember but I believe the dev came back to this game and did some updates including to the character to giver her a slightly larger chest to match the sequel.
I'll be frank, I think it a little bit unfair to call it a "gooner" shooter when the only really sexualized element is The Martyr's outfit and the fact that you could see her chest and her legs when you look down. The rest of the game is a really solid Marathon-like with unnecessarily tactical mechanics and hardcore over-the-top gory violence taken straight from Brutal Doom. It probably would've been more widely accepted by the boomer shooter community in a heartbeat if it weren't for the anime artstyle. That said, I am beyond hyped (lol) for Beyond Citadel. Played the demo for that recently and found it a net upgrade pretty much across the board, especially in the aspect of making the environments actually look somewhat varied, rather than being made of the same dark teal textures for literally every aspect of the environment the way the first game did.
Yeah lmao, plus the amount he jokes about it just being fetish content is insane. Like when he tries to talk about Guro instead of saying straight up what it is (it’s just gore) he divulges into a separate genre for 0. Lowkey started to feel brain rot just listening

@@snesbagel If Azathoth were awoken all existence would evaporate like a dream that's come to an end. Best case scenario would be Azathoth going back to sleep and hopefully dreaming up a better universe. I've also noticed that in Lovecraft's stories, Nyarlahotep seems to "hunt" humans who attain immortality of soul in the dream lands, hinting that perhaps when humans realize that they don't have to die, those thoughts cause the sleeping to stir in his slumber. Or maybe that dreams which are superbly humane and ideal might awaken the sleeping god? But in the end if the universe is truly indifferent then that indifference even applies to Azathoth, who may some day be overthrown by someone who's even better at sleeping than Azathoth is.
It is awoken it's just that time and such moves at a different speed, yeah. can't you feel it drifting off, like something in slow motion or high frames per second
Subbed. Your reading, coverage, gameplay and flow are all on point. Ive seen this game in my recommends on steam but havent seen any real coverage and the store page didnt really sell it to me
I was actually surprised at the level of research you had done into Ero Guro. Usually people just associate it with porn and sweep it under the rug. However, I would like to make minor corrections. I wouldn't say Rampo invented it, but he was the most famous to get involved into it. The art movement more developed with heightened censorship laws in the 1910s and 20s. Art and literary magazines would push the envelopes in response to the censorship laws, arguing that they are unfairly and unevenly enforced. They would obscure the lines of upsetting imagery, yet not violate the laws to the letter, seeing if such things would still get pushback by censors. It is incredibly hard to get a hold of much of the literature made at the time, though supposedly there are libraries out in the world preserving them. You are on point definitely about the 1960s and 1970s being a cinematic era of Ero-guro. Funnily enough a lot of the films were Rampo adaptations. The pornographic part of the era (pink films) is a little more complicated. A great piece of reading I recommend is Behind the Pink Curtain by Jasper Sharp (though it is relatively hard to get a hold of now, hopefully this changes). Where Jasper lays out the development of sex cinema in Japan and its oddly political roots. Pink films aren't purely for pornographic purposes (at least a chunk of them). Films from companies like Wakamatsu Production were actually attempts to get out from under the rigid Japanese film system and were widely accepted in important international film festivals as political works of art. Much of it supposedly commenting on war and societal violence. Was that to say that it wasn't supposed to be spicy? No, it was still supposed to be titillating and exciting, admittedly. But, politics was supposedly at the forefront of the creators' minds. Even into the early 2000s, pink films still had political edge to them in different ways. However, by that point, pink films and straight up pornos were very much distinct from each other; pink films having a distinctly softcore edge. I would argue that through the 90s and the 2000s, Ero Guro still maintains an artistic edge that we do so outside of weirdo sicko type hentai. A whole sub-genre of music is dedicated to the aesthetic (Ero Guro Kei...Shout out to Early Cali-Gari). I do hope that there is a chance to educate people on its history before people get categorized with the gore freaks out there.

Wow this makes me viscerally uncomfortable. It says a lot how violence can come across entirely differently depending on how it’s presented… there’s almost an art to controlling the tonal perception of your violence. While something like Chainsaw Man or Doom manages to keep its violence relatively tasteful, I guess by cranking up the exaggeration and presenting it comedically to the point of being slapstick, something about the way this game does it really rubs me the wrong way. I think it’s that despite being exploded apart so violently, a large amount of the corpses remain relatively intact and it kind of brings attention to the fact that the victim of violence was once a living thing, and the contrast with the exposed innards makes you think of the pain they went through in a way that just feels wrong to me. Good job presenting it clearly and succinctly so I don’t have to play it out of morbid curiosity.
I hate when violence in fiction is sadistic. When I was growing up I really liked dead space for having alien zombies that attacked with the sole intent to kill, in the most efficient way they can. When it's sexually suggestive or just sexual in nature it's way way worse. Also, I do I understand that both can be used for some good story telling
I just want more people to know about this game and talk about it. I recognize that its not everyones cup of tea and its got some offputting imagery. But at its core its a damn fine game made by a very passionate guy. I love this and can't wait to see more from Beyond Citadel.
Yeah, I had a huge semi the entire time I was playing this. I actually had to go to the doctor for medication but they didn't have any so they just took the whole thing off.
I get the strong impression that what makes a game run well is lots of fiddling with the graphics drivers - all of them, from every possible GPU - and how the game software interfaces with those drivers in order to throw its image onto your screen. This is the kind of mundane, uninteresting work that AAA studios excel at because they can just throw bodies at the problem, bodies who don't get to quit until all the bugs are worked out and the game runs smooth. By contrast, one motivated bedroom dev with a vision can put out some impressive games, but lacks the will or the manpower to do this optimization work. Often the dev just says "eh, good enough", especially when it's one for the goon cave and you have to pretend you didn't make it. It's one of the big downsides of indy development.
never saw the gore as sexual thing (even the dev ranted about it NOT being sexual when people called him out on it) but i guess its all "guro and goon" when the exploding gibs is of a woman. but i cant really defend the dev's twitter likes and art he made tho LMAO
@@snesbagel Yeah, it's a pretty good, challenging game. Plenty of content, branching levels and an evolving ship/angel that you play as. It's worth a look. Thank you, ZombieHobo, for the hearted comment, my good man. Much appreciated.
Head spinning from your ability to be mature about a game's erotic themes even if it's not something you approve of rather than the mandated options of skirting around it, really shallow "Yeah, I'm kinda a freak" responses or childishly acting like it's worse than Satan that seems to pervade any online discourse involving something NSFW.
@@snesbagel I entered the review dreading this to be another instance with the constant vibe if "And if you can believe it, some element of the game is something you're supposed to touch your *gulps, gameplay stops, screen fills with images of bananas, sausages and completely unrelated characters in their underwear* p-p-p-pen0r to, guys! So it's tremendously refreshing to have someone who knew what they were getting into rather than pussyfooting around it or treating everyone involved was the devil, while making it clear you wanted no part in it. I know the idea of treating your audience like adults in a video as literally focused on sex, guns and violence as possible can feel like a low bar to clear but with the puritanical sex-phobic nonsense I've endured in online spaces explicitly meant for adults it's extremely refreshing and admirable so thank you for putting in the time, seriously.
I’m surprised you don’t have more subs? Your commentary is wonderful across all your videos I’ve seen (Half-Life mostly). This is definitely a game I would’ve never known about or bothered interacting with (not rlly into this genre) but I’m glad to know of it’s existence, sorta in the way cavemen discovered the dangers of fire or bears I’d prefer to avoid the psychologically scarring from this one and my new found vocabulary from this video lol. Great video.
11:10 All scientific explanations of why this games original intention was a sin aside, the revolver description you gave me immediatly rang bells of the ruger pistol you get in CULTIC as your first gun, which when fully modded, is basically a one hit wonder.
All I can say- guy who did this game at least knows how to do a well done spritework. And on Giger and sex- as far as I recall, Giger was somewhat afraid of sex, that's why a lot of his artwork is "weirdly sexual", becuase that's what quite frankly teriffied him (not dissimilar to how Lovecraft used the sea- fcker was possitively afraid of it [amongst other things, but that would make this comment quite lengthy])
Honestly one of the most in-depth commentary on The Citadel so far as it's not just "Oh wooo, Doom + Awoogaa?!?! *E1M1 plays as Martyr lost most of her HP tanking all the enemies in the first level*" Also for some reason the first video to go deeper on eroguro genre The Citadel are mostly unique as it is basically a modern fps with a boomer shooter graphics, also you forgot to mention of the food gauge which your health value can't go over whatever your food gauge value are so it does kind of make The Citadel a survival game. In short, The Citadel is an amalgamation of genres just like eroguro Though personally i haven't finished The Citadel because the game really test your endurance as the game audio are mostly just ambience that is enough to drain you mentally though the pianos after each boss are a good break from it. Also for eroguro, once you are in it, you can't get out of it and no amount of finding god can get you out, shit's more addictive than heroin, in fact just do heroin instead.
I didn't talk about the food mechanic because it seemed kind of superfluous to me. I kind of forgot about it while I was playing the game lol. Also, uh, good luck with your addiction I guess, lol.
I recently played a game, Fidaputi Samurai, that seemed very similar to this; a retro boomer-shooter full of hentai women and whatnot, though with a lot more silly tone and definitely a lot less violent. Nice to see a variety of takes on the gooner shooter concept
Since you touched on it, uh, a good reminder for people to not harass the creator, as far as we know they didn't hurt anything but his creations, we're all weird in different amount of ways. I think at release one RUclipsr talked about it and it caused a massive amount of strange people harassing them, not even the RUclipsr fault either, you just, never know the people that follow you, pretty sure they apologized too even tho' it's not necessarily their fault. It's a single dev, they're passionate about a lot of things, you might not like some, but its always fiction unless proven otherwise, if you don't like it, act like an adult and don't buy it and move on. But yeah, guro's weird, but it really adds to the horror here. The second game is looking amazing tho', you can dropkick motherfuckers, its incredible. You didn't touch on it, but this game has a lot of options for like, real gun physics and shit which makes the game even harder, but its kinda cool that its there, and that you can opt for something more arcadey if you don't like dealing with bullet drops.
Watching this video and seeing the movement and weapons all I could think about was Marathon and Marathon Durandal. I can practically hear the Marathon music while watching .
Definitely a weird game, and for more reasons than meet the eye. You mentioned the performance issues. Well, the game tries to make the gibs look like they are 2d sprites, except they are not, they are flat 3d objects that ROTATE IN REAL TIME to alwas face you. That's a mindblowing waste of computing power, and if this is what we have on the surface, then I dread to imagine what else is inside it.
This is not a guro fetish game. Developer and publisher made a lengthy statement on that in the past before. Its simple gib, like so many other boomer shooters have, with maybe the exception that all enemies are females here. Otherwise good video
Generally FPS games don't do well in Japan by popularity, the zeitgeist prefers third person games as standard for reasons I'm still not sure of. That's generally why you see very very few FPS games made in Japan outside of a light gun machine. Citadel is definitely a product of that with how removed it feels from what its inspired by. Also Citadel is both getting a sequel and a fan made remake on the Half-Life 2 engine
I don't know how you got into my recommended, i don't even watch and play boomer shooters other than ultrakill and even then it's just the OST i'm mostly listening to. 10/10 Would let youtube recommend me more underrated channels with more bizarre topics
I paused the video right after you said you wouldn't explain guro, looked it up, saw some awful shit, only for you to properly explain it when I came back traumatized realizing I didn't have to put myself through that.
I love my, RUclips recommended, and learning about things I didn't know of previously as staying closed off to the west was, probably a better idea for my own wellbeing

the citadel isn't guro, or ero guro as it's frequently shortened to. guro, coming from english, means grotesque, while ero guro means erotic *and* grotesque. the content on display for the most part is simply guro, grotesque.
the developer has gone on record saying he is *not* an ero guro artist, but a guro artist. the distinction is important because it's clear that while the gore in the game is grotesque, it's not meant to be taken in an erotic fashion. the only explicitly sexual content in the game that i've actually been able to see as erotic or suggestive at all is the main character's-- Martyr's --design and the final boss, which are two bare-skin girls without any genitalia or mammary glands. that's pretty much it.
the game was review-bombed due to this misconception on release, especially after GmanLive's video on the game.
@@ground5295 Idk man, he's literally posted rule 34 of his game on twitter that's pretty suggestive of that. Sucks that the game got review bombed though, especially since if I'm remembering correctly, Gman was positive about it overall.

Don't remember but I believe the dev came back to this game and did some updates including to the character to giver her a slightly larger chest to match the sequel.
Lol, dude's got a one track mind. Gotta respect the commitment though.
There is in fact old sprites left in the game, if you start a new game, at the very beginning in the white room, don't move, and simply look down.
"You need a monastery" killed me
I'll be frank, I think it a little bit unfair to call it a "gooner" shooter when the only really sexualized element is The Martyr's outfit and the fact that you could see her chest and her legs when you look down.
The title is a joke. I doubt that many people have masturbated to this game.

The Sleeping God is Azathoth.
Our entire universe is just Azathoth's dream.
Basically a universal game of Don't Wake Daddy.
Oh so it's more of a Lovecraft thing than I thought at first.

I think "down bad" is an understatement

Excellent video!! You do your research, you're funny, and have a good voice for this! Keep em coming!🎉

Everyday is a chance to learn more cursed knowledge and never being able to forget it.

So it's tremendously refreshing to have someone who knew what they were getting into rather than pussyfooting around it or treating everyone involved was the devil, while making it clear you wanted no part in it. Also for some reason the first video to go deeper on eroguro genre
The Citadel are mostly unique as it is basically a modern fps with a boomer shooter graphics, also you forgot to mention of the food gauge which your health value can't go over whatever your food gauge value are so it does kind of make The Citadel a survival game.
In short, The Citadel is an amalgamation of genres just like eroguro
Though personally i haven't finished The Citadel because the game really test your endurance as the game audio are mostly just ambience that is enough to drain you mentally though the pianos after each boss are a good break from it.

Yeah, that one's been on my radar a bit.
The dev said that Marathon was a big inspiration, I'm just dumb and forgot to mention it.
That is bizarre.
