New diabetic here type 1 I’m 22 years old my pancreas gave out. When I was rushed to the hospital ( being completely conscious walking talking and driving) they took blood work and my blood sugar was 1140 my A1C was 15 so this video was super helpful thank you!
Careful with thigh sensors, surgery scheduled tomorrow. My thigh probably too dense/muscular and the sensor wire broke off immediately on injection and is stuck inside my thigh occasionally causing debilitating pain. Will be using at least 1” skin pinchable areas and also a adhesive remover to pull future sensors out straight to avoid this.
I have a type 1 diabetic son as of end of June he is or was special needs before that he has Digeorge and one kidney and club foot.Dexcom is a live saver!!
I've been using the upper buttocks/hip area for a couple of years now and my readings are almost always spot on compared to my experience w/abdomen and/or back of arm. T1 - 50 years.
I am a new Type 2 diabetic. My doctor quickly put me on Dexcom G6. I was quite overwhelmed. I have watched many of your videos and have learned so much. Thank you!
Started as type 2 diabetic and recently diagnosed a being a type 1.5 diabetic which is an autoimmune disease related diabetes which has been insulin resistant. Find your videos very helpful, waiting for my new DexcomG6 sensors and transmitter to come in on Friday,
If anyone new is wondering why all the different site options: you have to move sensors and pumps around when you change them. You run out of spots quicker than you'd think!
Pretty new to all this, type II and the results have been fantastic, A1C estimate is 6.2-6.3 and before I was at 7.5 and could not bring it down. Even my Doctor had heard of you. I ordered (from your link) the sample patches, very sensitive to adhesive. The best thing I found are the Skin Tac wipes, I had no idea these existed! Next month I am going on vacation to Europe (Italy and Switzerland!) and I knew I could not bring the bottle on the plane (I learned about the product from you!). Thanks you for doing all you do, it really helps. The skin grip patches arrived and caused zero reaction, not the slightest itch
Wow, I have been diabetic for over a decade and I have never heard of a type 2 with a CGM. I'm not trying to be rude or mean, or dismissive but it's just not something I have heard of or seen. I wouldn't think of a type 2 needing constant glucose readings.
@@AToneForOurSins they are marketing it to t2. Much more money for the manufacturer. What burns me up is the T2 going to the endocrinologist. Makes it’s harder to get an appointment.
I have the Dexcom 7. They really push using the arms. They don't like using the abdomen, even though they list it as an approved site. The arms are very difficult for me as I have had a large weight loss and tons of loose skin, not fat, on these areas. And I've knocked the sensor out once and it hit muscle once, which was painful. Both necessitated getting new sensors, which is where I found out Dexcom doesn't like the abdominal site. However, I've found it's pretty accurate there. I don't get compression lows like with the arm sites. I already have issues with actual nighttime lows, so I don't like having to verify my lows multiple times at night. I do have a fat pad on the abdomen and find it super comfortable. I think I will try my thigh next time, since I do my insulin in my abdomen. Thank you for providing a wide variety of information on your channel. I'm a critical care nurse and I've not found any errors in your info plus I've come away with some new info after every one.
I appreciate the video. I have been wondering about different sites since I got my Dexcom G6, but was worried I would end up wasting a sensor on a poorly picked site (and they're not cheap). Thank you!
Great video. 47 years T1 and I’m checking other areas to use G6. Your suggestions +/- seem to be spot on based on my use of CGM sensors over the past 15 years. I need to vary sites as I find issues if near and underlying scar tissue. Arms are a favorite, but I was using Eversense for a few years and had several arm insertions (They are an implanted sensor in upper arms) with a minor procedure to insert under skin for 3 months at a time, so scar tissue is issue.
I really like your videos . I am type 2 diabetic using a Stelo CGM. I am going to try a different site that you have showed on this video. Thanks for your informative videos and links.
@ Type One Talks, I've been wearing Dexcom G5 and G6 for three years. I always place the sensors on my lower lateral abdomen and have never had any problems with placement and wear. Never had one even come close to peel off. I use Skin Tac liquid adhesive painted on the sensor tape itself, not on the skin first. Then let dry for 5 to 10 minutes. Then apply. I have never had any problems with the adhesive not lasting 10 or 20 days. The bottle of liquid is much better than the Skin Tac wipes. (Yes for traveling, the wipes would be better, the bottle is 4 ounces and lasts forever but is 4 ounces. Not OK for airplane travel.). And after removal of the sensor, either TacAway adhesive remover or Detachol Adhesive remover for the residue. T1 for 30 years, my last Glycohemoglobin was 5.8.
Hello, from the U.S. I appreciate the effort you make in your videos to help diabetics across the globe. I am wondering if you find blue jeans are likely to tear a sensor out of the outer thigh simply because they tend to be snug pants. I'm not talking about skinny jeans but more traditional jeans. I like the leg idea simply because I can use both hands to apply the sensor and transmitter. I like to pinch the skin upwards when inserting the sensor to protect the muscles from penetration. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience. Right now I'm trying the outer upper arm for the first time. For years I've been using my belly.

Just got my dexcom after months of J&B giving me problem after problem for almost a year i kid you not. Wacthed a few of your videos and will drop a sub for the appreciation. Tthank you!
I am trying the arm placement for the first time. This was due to folliculitis from my last two abdominal placements. I determined where it wouldn’t get compressed when I laid on that side. The place ended up being somewhat between the rear of my arm and the inside. I’m already very happy. I honestly can’t tell I’m wearing it. Thank you so much for your video.
Interesting that different sensors suit different positions. I can't put mine on my upper arm because invariably they fall off! Instead i put them on my outer thigh near - but not too near - my knee. I notice there is a higher reading when I stand and walk than when I sit for a bit. It works better near my knee. Maybe I am too sedentry but it tends to underread if higher up. Like you, I found my stomach less accurate. Thanks for another interesting and enjoyable blog!
My favorite place to put my Dexcom is on my front of my upper arm left or right me being a woman I have to be careful when putting on or taking off my bra / brassiere tried the upper thigh got no reading second favorite places anywhere on my abdomen did not know about the chest we'll try that site in 10 days
the chest is my favorite spot for the dexcom g7 and the libre freestyle 3. thank you for making these videos. watching your videos about the chest is what got me started on the chest been doing chest for 3 months
Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I am new to using a cgm and I'm learning everything I can about them. I was diagnosed 1969 (yes an old fart haha). I love your sense of humour too.
T1D 33 years. My favorite spot is outside of my arm. I am looking for new area. Thanks for the info. I also dislike abdomen. Looking forward to results from thigh and calf.
Tom, I really enjoy your videos and come back to this particular one for a refresher from time to time. I give the different spots a try to avoid scaring. Today, my calf - it's me and my gangster self!!!
This is perfect, I’m 31 weeks pregnant and can no longer place my Dexcom on my belly as it’s just kinda uncomfortable plus it’s sensitive, definitely going to try my thigh as i have been rotating back and forth on my arms
Tom, thank you so much for all the videos. I started following you when I 1st got my dexcom g6. I have to say, my favorite location is my upper thigh, but I do have to shave the areas. I'm a side sleeper, so upper arms don't work very well. I'm in the US, so I'm hoping the Libre 3 will come our way soon, I have used the libre 1, but my doctor wanted me to try the dexcom. I still prefer the Libre, and am hoping to switch back soon. Again, thanks for the great videos and info.
I just got one today for the first time... I put it on my top abdomen, like on my abs.. and it is hurting pretty bad, could be a nerve or something, but I'm gonna ride it out see if it works.

I AM the type who normally reads all the instructions and faithfully follows them. But in this video you encouraged me to try alternate placement sites! I'm a side sleeper, so some of your favorites wouldn't work for me. I just tried one that you didn't mention - about halfway up my thigh, about halfway between the front and the inner. Doesn't seem to get in the way of anything, and it measured within 10 points of my stick meter. Slight "rotations" should easily give me upwards of 8 different spots in that general area counting both thighs. Thanks so much! Regards, Bob in the US (Arizona)
Uh oh. That area flexes a lot more than I had thought - almost completely loose and it's only day 3. What's the best way to quickly secure it in place, something that can be bought locally?
Lower abdomen is where I have my first one. I have experienced it being pulled by my belt when I crunch over. Also, if you are hairy, shave off the hair at that area maybe, mine was peeling off within a few days on a couple sections but is still there, particularly because I bought waterproof patches and stuck one over (also didn't stick on well with hair 😄)
New D7 user, and I'm so thankful I found this video! I am always doing something, I get very hot and sweat a lot. I can't come up with one place that is exempt. 🤔 I am just now placing a new sensor, and I chose to use my upper abdomen. I have used the D7 recommended sites for the last two. I saw those Skin Grips, but I think I am going to try Tegaderm. I have had to use Tegaderm more times than I care to count. I had to put cloth bandaid and Metene self adherent bandage over the sensor, and to be honest, it's a pain! Wish me luck with the tegaderm!
I hadn't heard of compression lows before, but it makes sense. I'm having some issues with that at night - guess I'll be changing my sleep position! Thank you!
Upper arm works best for me. I tried the thighs twice and both insertions were a bit painful. I live in Chicago and do not own a car. Pre-pandemic, bus, L and subway were the usual transportation modes. Wearing a sensor on public transit sometimes requires extra precautions. During rush hours, I always look for a window seat where I can position the sensor arm next to the window. You would be amazed how often other passengers jab the upper arm with their elbow or backpack. On several occasions, I have needed to explain to a seatmate or standing passenger that I am wearing a medical device, a glucose sensor, on my upper arm, and that an elbow or backpack can dislodge the transmitter.
I have trouble getting readings when I wear it on my upper arm, although it’s otherwise a great spot. Even from upper arm to waist band on the same side, I lose connectivity from Dexcom to T slim.
@@TypeOneTalks you mentioned your chest, you said that you have trouble keeping it attached, but how was your accuracy when you wore it on your chest? It seems that this (if you have good accuracy), would solve the problem of my issue with out of range errors. Thanks so much for your videos, they’re fun and SUPER informative!
Just discovered this video and love it!! Can’t wait to try new sites. I have cystic fibrosis so am very skinny. My problem is, only fat I have is on my stomach, which is being used for insulin pump, and some on back of arms. Unfortunately, I do lay on my arms at night. I wanted to try thighs, but it would have to be the front since I sleep on my sides. Any luck doing it towards the front of your thigh? I toss and turn as an insomniac due to meds so both sides are out. It’s really frustrating and honestly I can’t wait until the much smaller g7 comes out next year.
I have not tried the front of my thing as I thought it would bother me there but I can imagine it could work. If you try please let me know if it did work for you! Thank you!
Type one have been since 11 now 19 have always placed on the tricep/back to the arm, but it always comes off due to sweat so I needed a new spot and this side of the thigh seems like a really good idea of just trying it will see how it goes
Thanks for the video I’m new to Dexcom G6 but the belly has been bothering me and I have scar tissue because I lost the kidney so mines been going crazy I’m gonna try the back of the arms and maybe the thighs but great video I’ve also lower my A1c 1.4 points in 30 days from the G6
@@TypeOneTalks no problem sorry for my English. But it change my life. I’m only 23 had diabetes since I was 2. So it sucks. But this really help me. Since New technology came out.
1:43 itchy sensor site: I always assume that's the body fighting off an infection, coz when I take the sensor off the piercing wound will have slight inflammation & redness. I most often get it when the adhesive is going and an open-air access path to the piercing site has opened up (ie: easy route for any bacteria). If it happens within just a couple days: you may not have cleaned the site sufficiently, or maybe the excess sweat has flushed some hidden bacteria out of the sweat pores. When it happens to me I change the sensor, don't wanna deal with that.
I like to have it on my abdomen, since it’s nowhere close to where I have the Omni pod. The Omni pod irritates my skin easily so I can’t have the sensor on any Omni pod place. That only leaves my legs, and it always hurt to have it there, so it doesn’t work. I can basically only have the sensor on the stomach lol. But hey, it works.
My son and I both have type 1. I've had it for 30 years. My son has had it for 3. I still don't have a pump. I want one so bad, but I feel like I'm jumping through hoops to do so. Hopefully I will get one soon!
My absolute favorite place is between the shoulder blade and spine. It rarely hurts, I don't know it's there, it never gets in the way, tape last, great readings. Downside ... need help placing it. I also use that space for my omnipod placement.
Will be trying dexcom as soon as my new insurance starts. Trying to find a good site. Libre was great on my chest. I'm a side sleeper so libre kept erroring
Thank you for sharing !!! I've been a Type 1 Diabetic for 15 years...and the last 3 years I've been using the Freestyle Libre and have LOVED how it's a game changer with no more 15+ finger sticks. The only downside now is that the 15 minute delay is causing severe LOs weekly. I've been told to try the Dexacom G6, but am scared to try something new. My favorite spots on the Libre are on my Upper thighs and lower back and I rotate sights since I want incognito spots and don't want any strangers seeing my meters. Have you tried those spots on the Dexacom G6? I know they don't recommend it..but want to know if I can use those areas if I switch to the Dexacom G6 before I commit to trying it. If you tried it...was it accurate? Thanks for your help !
Great Video! I just got my G6 a few weeks ago and so far I've only used it on my abdomen. I'm looking forward to trying some other sites. I'm lucky enough to have fatty calves with little hair 🤣
When you wear it on your thigh, how does the placement impact your use of pants pockets? It seems the location would interfere with anything you had in your pockets.
Could you advise me to where to buy a free style libra? I am type 2 diabetic for a long time. I don’t take any medication for it. I watch what I eat and excercise to keep my sugar level under control. I am going to travel this summer so pricking the finger is little bit inconvenient all the time.i am a senior. In Canada the medical coverage is not available for type 2 diabetes I get 200 test strip for a year from the coverage. I pay for the rest.
I found out that I was type 2 about 2 months ago. Wound up in the ER in DKA with a CBG of 444 but my A1C was 17. Stayed in the ICU for a week. Used the Dexcom for about 7 days on the upper abdomen, and it fell off. Will have to try different placement site. Thank you for this video
I’m soooo boring… I use my left tricep or *bingo wing* (Licensed in the U.K.) just varying the site each application by centimetres just so I know pretty much where it is at all times and I’m less likely to knock it off accidentally because I’m a klutz! Also I’m able to keep it stuck as it gets less wet from bathing in this position but it also helps I use skintac wipes to make it stick better. Yep I’m sure after years of this my left arm may drop off but at least my diabetes has been somewhat controlled!
Do they lose accuracy past 10days? Or do you only have to replace when it starts falling out? I’m still on my very first insertion so your videos are a blessing, thank you.
I do Brazilian jiu jitsu so I use my thighs. The key is to insert it between where your muscles are if you are low fat like me. So I flex my leg to identify the muscle outlines and go in between where the fat is lol
@3:05 would the chest be practical placement for a woman? I would be interested to hear your thoughts. Also injections into hip fat… when I tried it stung like hell and that’s supposed to be a fatty area and I can definitely “pinch an inch” unfortunately!
I know when I made a video about this site for FreeStyle Libre many women got back to me with very positive feedback. I have not gathered that much data for Dexcom yet but generally I am not hearing any complaints in that department so far... Hope this helps!
Anyone out there tried injecting into hip (love handle) fat where it didn’t sting like F?!!! Or are there any other unusual places to inject that worked for you? My belly mostly gets it with the odd thigh needle on special occasions ;@)

It shouldn't unless it puts pressure on the sensor. If the sensor is compressed it might lead to inaccurate (lower than actual) sensor readings.

Great informative and helpful video! Most of all very funny!!😊
I absolutely love my forearm! It’s one number off or exactly the same as my Dexcom! I love it, do it off center and to the left ! Works 10days too!
I’ve always used the abdomen. The patch actually coming off has not been an issue for me for a very long time and I usually forget it’s on.
I just got one today for the first time... I put it on my top abdomen, like on my abs.. and it is hurting pretty bad, could be a nerve or something, but I'm gonna ride it out see if it works.
This video took a long time to make but I enjoyed every minute of the preparation, filming, and editing. I hope it will help some of you who are using the Dexcom sensors.

Thank you. I found this info very helpful
Your number 1 is my number 1. Never tried it anywhere else then upper arm..
So helpful and interesting!! Thank you!! ❤
Tom how about a video on Dexcom G7 sites in your experience with the Dexcom G7 sites.
Loved the comment about shaving the hair first. I learned this the hard way (ouch).
I hadn't heard of compression lows before, but it makes sense. I'm having some issues with that at night - guess I'll be changing my sleep position! Thank you!
Been using Dexcom G6 for 1yr now and the only place I have ever used is the Outside of upper arms
Thank you for sharing your experience Marty. Much appreciated!
The leg works? That seems amazing!
Thank you!
I really enjoyed this video.
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you for your comment! Have a great day!
Great video!!
can you do a video like this for G7 as well ?
There's G7 now?
Type one have been since 11 now 19 have always placed on the tricep/back to the arm, but it always comes off due to sweat so I needed a new spot and this side of the thigh seems like a really good idea of just trying it will see how it goes
Thank you so much for your help!
I though you put the dexcom on your forehead, base on the picture that you posted! Well done Tom!
Not on the forehead. That would hurt!:) Thank you!
Lol 😂😂😂
Thanks for the video I’m new to Dexcom G6 but the belly has been bothering me and I have scar tissue because I lost the kidney so mines been going crazy I’m gonna try the back of the arms and maybe the thighs but great video I’ve also lower my A1c 1.4 points in 30 days from the G6
Back of my arms and worst is low stomach like you. And yes I have highly sweat glances so it’s always falling off.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Have a great day!
Thank you for your feedback my friend! Very helpful!
I'm using skin tac to keep the g6 attached. Never loosens the entire 10 days.
My favorite site to put my Dexcom
Your number one is my #1. I have knocked it off, so I try to place it further under the arm, but. Ot too much. I don’t care who sees it….
I agree with the stomach
My son and I both have type 1. I've had it for 30 years. My son has had it for 3. I still don't have a pump. I want one so bad, but I feel like I'm jumping through hoops to do so. Hopefully I will get one soon!
My absolute favorite place is between the shoulder blade and spine. It rarely hurts, I don't know it's there, it never gets in the way, tape last, great readings. Downside ... need help placing it. I also use that space for my omnipod placement.
Thank you for sharing! Btw my Omnipod 5 video is coming out today:)
Will be trying dexcom as soon as my new insurance starts. Trying to find a good site. Libre was great on my chest. I'm a side sleeper so libre kept erroring
From The USA in what site can I order libre freestyle online?
Thank you 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!
2:50. Yes & yes 👌
I love this guy
I love you too!
thank you
I found up and down works the best on stomach..
I've also successfully tried one sensor re-use following your suggestions and intend to try it again. Thanks for that too!
I just started using the latest dexcom. It checks my blood Sugar every 5 minutes and it goes to an app on my phone.
I have a Dexcom too
Have you considered doing something like this for G7
Kinesiology tape is bomb proof. 1-2 strips on your site and the sensor will never get ripped out
Could you advise me to where to buy a free style libra?
444!!! Wow! That's high!!!
Thank you so much for sharing your insights from the UK!
I used the g6 on my chest and I loved it but I'm afraid to try it with the g7
@3:05 would the chest be practical placement for a woman? I would be interested to hear your thoughts. Also injections into hip fat… when I tried it stung like hell and that’s supposed to be a fatty area and I can definitely “pinch an inch” unfortunately!
I am a woman and I wear mine on upper breast tissue, works great
I know when I made a video about this site for FreeStyle Libre many women got back to me with very positive feedback. I have not gathered that much data for Dexcom yet but generally I am not hearing any complaints in that department so far... Hope this helps!
@@TypeOneTalks Well to be frank breast tissue is made up mostly of fat with glands, ducts etc but I’m still too chicken to try it!
@@mandayork4333 I’m scared!!! But yay for you! x
Anyone out there tried injecting into hip (love handle) fat where it didn’t sting like F?!!! Or are there any other unusual places to inject that worked for you? My belly mostly gets it with the odd thigh needle on special occasions ;@)
