  • Meet Master Locho and Sarika Singh, renowned artists and educators dedicated to the practice, preservation, and promotion of Buddhist art. Based in Dharamsala, India, nestled in the Himalayan Mountains, they've established the 'Center for Living Buddhist Art,' which includes the 'Thangde Gatsal Art School and Studio' and the 'Himalayan Art Museum.'
The museum serves as a gateway to the rich cultural heritage of India and Tibet, aiming to raise awareness about Buddhist art through contemporary thangka works rooted in tradition. It showcases masterpieces by Master Locho and Sarika Singh, offering insight into the 2,300-year-old journey of Buddhist painting tradition.
Thangka paintings, familiar in Buddhist iconography, have a deep history. Originating in India and flourishing in Tibet for centuries, they found new roots in India after the Tibetan diaspora in 1959. Dharamsala became a hub for preserving Tibetan Buddhist art and culture, with Master Locho leading the charge.
Master Locho, a distinguished thangka painter, has dedicated over three decades to this craft, teaching students worldwide. Sarika Singh, co-founder of the 'Center for Living Buddhist Art' and 'Himalayan Art Museum,' is one of the few Indian female thangka masters globally. With a passion for preservation, she has earned a PhD in Buddhist and Tibetan studies, championing this ancient art form with dedication and expertise.
