- The firewood market where I am it is already saturated with an abundance of hardwood. However, had an idea to switch it up, and offer a different product. Very surprised with the results and excited to see how it works out in the long run.

The untapped firewood market I was missing out on
Very well done Mike. Great entertainment.
Wow! Absolutely stunning video of the barge!!!
Thanks Sarah
Looks like a four-legged movie star you need to keep that famous actor she is very good for videos
You got me right in the side of the head when you were spitting, need to hand out helmets for us next time. wow wow wow awesome video at the end, very cool.
As I grew up, dad did firewood as his full time job. For quite a few years we shipped 40 foot semi trailers to SoCal every week. Cut wood into a deck during the week then Saturday we would load the trailer. At the time he said that he would never do local retail. He then bought his own truck and trailer and shipped to South Lake Tahoe. For the last 15 years or so he did local retail. He did bundles as well for a local gas market which was a pain, but something he learned was to use plastic. With rope, you saw what happens. It gets loose. It doesn't matter what you do or how tight you get it, it comes loose. I think a good idea is to use a natural fibre rope if you go that way. That way they can burn the rope without any funky smells.
They sell those same size bundles here in NYC , 711 , home depot , supermarkets , even some drug stores . Put them in the Derby market for campers that forgot to bring wood . Good luck .
always thinking of the main chance - good job developing that niche market kleeman - keep it up. spectacular vid of the two boat. your unflagging cheerfulness and sweet nature is a very good thing to behold.
Thanks James
You are correct, best tow boat video yet. I love the fog, but even better was the glassy river and the ripples coming from the front of the barges. That, with the fog and everything was beautiful. Thanks Cap for posting them.
Good luck with your side jobs! You are correct, best tugboat aerial to date!!
robert simmons glad you enjoyed it
Good luck with the luxury firewood business. That's a clever angle! When I got married I was completely broke. Bought my suit with money I made selling firewood on craigslist. Once was enough for me...
Watch Wes Work haha, must really love her! I’ve been enjoying your tractor videos. I have an appreciation for people who fix things as opposed to buying new and shiney as soon as something goes wrong with what they have. Solid channel.
PRETTY COUNTRY
DAVID WATSON II indeed!
I'd love some of the sawdust!
I hope you are saving and bagging all those cedar wood chips from cutting because they are great for use in meat smokers or fragrance baggies for the linen closet, too. Don't let those go to waste. And besides, great that you are wrapping your wood bundles with twine instead of plastic. We don't need more plastic trash in our landfills.
Nearly two years later hows the Upmarket firewood sales going :) Great video love the River clip :)
3 comments : I admire your ambition , most beautiful towboat footage ever ! and You must be a nice guy if the neighbors dog loves you that much. Dog confirms what I have thought all along.
stashwax roller I appreciate the kind words and thanks for tagging along with us on the channel!
Thanks Doug,.
Great ideas and use of the wood. Love it Mike thanks for sharing.
SLC Farms hey and thanks for watching sir!
Captain Kleeman i watch them all just sometimes im driving tractor and cant comment. Have a blessed week
Always have to think forward. Shrink wrap is more costly than twine. The videos are always great in content thanks. Stay safe
Good for you and being industrious.
Should have sold the cedar wood chips also by the bag
Glade to see you wearing your Champs! ( I learned my.lesson!) And you know that cedar is especially good at growing in the really.wet areas mike!. And that looked line some nice cedar! I've cut a few thousand post and rails! Pick up your self if you haven't Yat! Is a hammer & fruo.
Around here we do have a lot of forest and burning wood is not quite as common as it used to be. It amazes me every time I go by national chain stores and see 8 or 10 sticks of wood on sale for $8 to $10 . I hope you build another cash flow for yourself. Thanks Doug.
Cap’n, ain’t capitalism awesome? One of the reasons I watch your channel is because I appreciate how hard you work... and, I want to do what little I can to help you succeed.
I think I told you a bit about my neighbor Donnie... the best housewife on the block. Well, he was poor as a church mouse. He could just make ends meet and had no money for car repairs. However his old V-6 Chevy was only hitting on 4 cylinders. So, I agreed to show him how to change the points and plugs.
At 9AM Saturday morning, I brought my tools over and we got started. First we gapped the plugs... that was pretty slow and uneventful (except for the one plug where he broke the lower ceramic shield).
I grab the socket and ratchet and show him how to remove the first plug. My wife hollers and reminds me that I promised to go to the bank as soon as it opens. That was before direct deposit and we had checks out that we had to cover. So, I show him how to reverse the ratchet, put a plug in it and start it in the hole. Then off to the bank and spark plug store I go.
Thirty minutes later I come back. Donnies under the hood ratcheting like crazy. When I approach he looks up with a grimace. He is still working on plug 1???
Donnie tells me, “I think I stripped the threads, it won’t tighten up.”
I grab the ratchet, pop the socket off and look at the plug. The porcelain top is sticking out of the bottom of the socket???
I ask him if he had looked at it. He says, “Yeah, it fell out and I looked at it before I put it back in, to screw it in.”
I tell him that it’s a good thing he put it in the socket upside down... ‘cause you can’t strip the threads that way!!!
He breaths a sigh of relief. Seven spark plugs, a set of points/condenser and 2 hours later the jalopy was ready for his wife’s next demolition derby trip to Walmart.”
That was the beginning of Donnie’s introduction to saving money by doing his own repairs... I’ll tell you about his next attempt one of these days... if you’re interested.
That was an awesome towboat shot... rivals the towboat from the mist video for sure.
I freaking love your stories!!
@@sarahbeachy4404 thanks, I have told a few more Neighbor Donnie stories on my channel.
Getting a mill?
Red cedar heartwood make really nice flower boxes.
If you take the dirt out in the winter, they will last a very long time.
When I sold wood by the cord, I threw in a large arm full of cedar. Everybody loved it. Soon I was selling faster than I could process.
i figured you were gonna sell bundles for camping, a few ppl around here do that and they do sell. which i guess is pretty much what you did.
Captain of the Luxury Firewood Market. Nicely played! Subbed to the new channel! Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Over 60 years ago, I learned that the 40 hour a week job keeps you alive. What you do with the rest of your time, gets you ahead. Firewood will become even more valuable next winter. With the turbulent oil market we may have shortages next winter. A cord of dry hard wood burned in a good wood stove will give heat equivalent to 200 gallons of no 2 heating oil. Stockpile a lot of wood. I split by hand for 10 years but for the past 35 years I have been using a log splitter. It can be horizontal or vertical but I use it vertical most of the time while I sit on a stool. Good Luck, Rick
I love burning cedar wood when you're out camping it helps with the bugs an the smells are great too
John Warren absolutely!
If you find interesting grain patterns, could try selling it for knife scales. Should be lots on eBay as examples
To me it does not matter that you are posting firewood videos. The name of this channel is "Captain Kleeman", not "Clearing land and building a boat cabin". To me it is about you, and the things that you do. I like the fact that you leave in your mistakes and show what really happens. To me it shows what anyone can do if they try. Keep up the good work.
Dark_Angel_Don I appreciate that and thank you for leaving a comment sir. Catch you on the next one!
Mike,I feel that if the fire wood bundles will ever become profitable you're going to have to invest in some sort of spliter !!
I was impressed with the electric saw on this video too. It looks like things are working out well.
walter mattson really happy with it so far!
This is fantastic. No snow left anywhere.
The new Making it Happen yup
I'm impressed with that electric saw. Seems nice and quiet
Dirt Brute it’s been a great addition. Really like it
We also like the new battery powered outdoor tools. They are very convenient for a quick job, or even overall maintenance for a smaller yard. There's some great brands out there and Captain K's Ryobi seems to do the job well.
Bought one in February love it except the battery fell out few times
What about targeting customers that might need wood for carving, making toys, or Christmas ornaments? I agree that the drone footage of the river is the best so far. Have a blessed and safe week.
William Matthews I may do that as well. But I need a decent bandsaw to make them carving size pieces first. But maybe in the future!
Way to think outside the box, that's when dreams come reality. Stay blessed my man
Andy Moss thank you sir!
I have an ammo can fund, I put all my pocket change and unspent cash in it every other week. And you are correct that drone video at the end was absolutely beautiful.
BlueDually4x4 coffee can funds are the way to go for sure!
You can make bank doing firewood, even if you're by the woods. Here in eastern Idaho my friend and I sold a lot of firewood and it's everywhere here. Everybody here wants Pine. There's a guy that started years ago selling bundles at gas stations and grocery stores and they charge $5 per bundle or 2 for $8.99 and they're half the size of yours. He now sells at all Kroger, and Albertsons stores and almost all gas stations across Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Nevada, and Oregon. We can get anywhere from $150 to $475 per cord of wood and pine being the most expensive and most popular. The rich people in Jackson Hole Wyoming will gladly pay $475 per cord and it's only around a 90 mile drive and haul 5 cord loads in a single axle dump truck.
Great video. Got to have goals in life , enjoy watching your adventures.
Chris Andert thank you!
I do much like you when it comes to spending. I teach and drive a bus as a career. That is living expenses. What I make baling hay, doing tractor work, and welding jobs is what I use to support my equipment and tool purchases. Glad to hear other people doing this. Great video and awesome idea on the firewood.
K&H Tractors it’s just a simple and safe way to do it. Can’t beat it.
I think you have a great plan. Side money for side projects. A bit of every thing in your videos is great by me, always makes for something different. I am thinking the next year should have lots of great videos. That electric saw is making me want one. Try some bundles of kindling, or mix some in to your bundles, as another value added feature. always looking forward to your next video.
salty 101 good idea on the kindling. And thanks for the kind words sir!
Finally, someone that knows how to split firewood correctly. I have seen so many people swing the axe wrong, your technique swinging, or pushing down from the midline of the body should allow you to swing that axe all day. Very nice.
Awesome video. Lots of interesting content and the Ceder firewood idea was a smart move.
Every dime that helps fill up that coffee can fund find brings you one day closer to your goals of buying that mill chainsaw.

Another great video. We love the entrepreneurial spirit.
Cb Boggs and I love awesome subscribers like you!
Great idea to "add value" to you firewood and pleased it's working for you 👍 Also interesting to hear you explain how it all ties together for your future projects - look forward to following your progress and also excited to see your new channel on Tuesday. Keep up the great work 👏
Localmotion thank you!
Stumbled onto this channel today ..... great content
Patrick kelly thank you!
Thanks Doug.
If your wife sews, have her make some cloth bags, 3x3, 4x4, 6x6, various sizes. Stuff them with hearth cedar chips for putting in closets and drawers. Extra, cash.....You must take wife's paycheck too, you being He Man of House.
RK Harm24 that’s definitely not how this house works.
@@CaptainKleeman mine neither, but since it was ius guys talking, I can say stuff like that.lololol
RK Harm24 she is an incredible woman and we are raising two amazing daughters. I don’t talk like that when it’s “just the guys”. You do you, but that’s not who I am.

Great Video. Thanks
Donald Lewis thank you!
Awesome video and also great drone footage! Have a Happy Memorial day weekend!😁👍
Cappy, It's a lot of work, thats how a business gets started. Keep up the good videos, wish you the best.
Make a setup to fill with kindling. replacing one piece of wood with the splinters you get when splitting with a kindling bundle so they get both wood and kindling in the same bundle. It at least gives you an option you can ask them when they order if they want as it is a waste product for you but for them it is less work.
Andrew H good idea!
Great work Captain, good idea with the cedar fire wood, hope it works out for you. Always enjoy seeing Charlotte stop by. Thanks Doug for the Waynesville FD materials.
Keep up the great work captain kleeman
Richard Hedrick will do!
Looks like a good system Captain. You are making great progress and the rewards will be awesome. Cheers!
Keith L thank you sir!
In the last 2 minutes, the wake interaction and propagation is kind of fascinating. Really interesting to see how each corner of a barge, adds a new wake.
I just subbed. Can't wait for the new channel. Thanks Kleeman
Andy B thank you!
I don't know any firemen that don't have some kind of side job! Good for you Capt.
No doubt.
The schedule is a big player in that. Personally, I started a one-man stump grinding business.
Tony Peters that’s absolutely right!
@@firecaptaintom6670 My son started a landscaping co {he's a LT}
You bashed the go pro and didn't even cuss! You're a better man than me Gunga Din!
Those splitting shots from above would look super cool with a high-speed camera!
Hi from the UK, i think we need danger money with all those bits of wood flying every where . Great video.
70mmbobbyj hahaha, you make a good point
Awesome idea finding some other uses for wood! Might as well make money off of what would have just been burnt up in a pile and spread around.👍😎👏
Lenne Longe exactly! Catch you on the next one sir!
Keep up the great work on all your videos. Missing seeing you working with Mike. From time to time I see you on his channel but I know your full time job takes precedent. You guys are so funny together.
Also, your starting to look like Cotontop 3 with all the gear your wearing. Lol!!!
Hope you and your family had a great Memorial Day Weekend and keep up the great work!!!
Stephen Lamarre hey I appreciate the kind words and hope everything is well on your end!
Great ending video! niche video that works!

Nice video, Mike. I wish you all good luck with your new project. You aren't to dusty with that chopper [axe] are you; whatever you say is fine by me , young man. Keep these fab videos coming, they are always entertaining !!

Interesting idea of getting into the potpourri market lol 🤑 👍🏻
JC Mathis III fingers crossed!
You're a busy guy! I have trouble trying to post 1 video a week so I can't imagine all you're doing! Nice hearing your insight and thoughts on side money spending etc. I do much the same exact way. Lovin' you cedar side business idea. Best of luck with all your endeavors.
Neil Koch: Dig-Drive-DIY can’t wait for your next video!
Tow Boat Industries
Great idea Captain! Its certainly worth a shot since you have it available and it just takes a little hard work. I'm glad its working out for you. A note for the mill: I find that hardwoods mill easier when green. After milling, everything gets put on stickers for drying. You might talk to Logger Wade about a used saw from his operation. There may be one you can purchase that will get you started and have a bigger displacement than you could afford new.
Travis Macie excellent advice all the around sir. Thank you!
3 hours into this video being online and I subscribed to the new channel at #127.
Seems like you’re going to have another successful channel Mike. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wayne Crews thank you and fingers crossed!
Way to set the bar high Doug!!
Fire Captain Tom 😂
Beautiful wood.
Cedar was used for making pencils.
"Get yer heritage pencils here!"
(Edit): and kists for storing linen and blankets as the cedar repelled moths and smelled pleasant.
Do your cutting over something to collect the sawdust from.....sell the aromatic shavings too...
Nice work Captain! Hopefully you can find someone close by that can mill that wood for you 😁. The drone footage was fantastic! 👍🏻
Elite Earthworks LLC plan on milling it myself with the Alaskan mill I talked about purchasing in the video. And maybe one day I’ll get a band saw as well for more production.
Captain Kleeman that’s cool! Looking forward to seeing it
Hey just a thought. You should use plastic to wrap your wood in. You can get the wood package tighter
Rob Bee not a bad idea
Well, he's a fireman, & firemen are good with ropes & knots.
Nothing wrong with the coffee can fund it comes in handy. I will be subbing to the new channel. Keep up the great videos
Kenny Mysak thank you! And thanks for subbing to the other channel as well!
The birds love the berries off of cedar trees. Now for the firewood as a firefighter hope you know you dont burn cedar or pine in a fireplace or wood burning stove or you will be burning down someones house. It is good for fire pits and has a great smell. Also your wife can put a few small pieces of cedar in your closets and it keeps bugs(moths) out. Ready for your new tow boat channel. Have a great Memorial day weekend.
Kirk Wilson yup! Advertised for fire pits and helping with flying bugs.
@@CaptainKleeman glad to hear that I have fought so many chimney fires when i was your age.

Great idea selling luxury wood!
use bathroom scales to sell at a set weight.
Find an old truck or tractor tire that you can lay on the ground and fill it with your cut logs standing upright. Then you just walk around the tire splitting logs as you go because the tire keeps the split pieces in the center and you won't be spending all that effort retrieving them.
Capn Crusty thanks for the tip!
a bungee and a small piece of chain helps hold it together so you're not chasing it also.
The chaps are a great idea for sure but are those steel toes? My big toe was saved by mine the other day.Id like to get some with the top foot shank too.
I dont know your local are rules. Here firewwod is embargoed. meaning cut firewood is prohibited from transportation across count and state lines. Has to do with the ash bugs and slowing the travel. Pine trees also have a bug associated with it. Firs are immune but al kinds of pine are lined up ti be infected and killed. if that isnt the case there it is awesome
Randy J we don’t have those kinds do laws here. State and national land prohibit bringing firewood in. But the ash bug has done its damage here. Not many left
Thumbs up for the dog. More handsome then you :P I hope you're all staying healthy.
m2hmghb hahaha, I agree with that!
if succsesful you may need to invest in a wood splitter mechanical one
greg hurrell would come in handy!
Ahoy Captain
Murphy Law ahoy sir!
Im not to far east of Waynesville great area
💪
Really by hand !!! I built a log splitter. By hand went out with the horse and buggy !!! Lol. Hey how about an up date on the boat cabin. As always a very nice vid.
Spydr 1 or Mark 1 not afraid of hard work. Enjoy it actually.
plant some popular trees around your property or even fir. and then just keep doing what you are doing. the market is there.
I love to split wood the old fashioned way. I could literally do it all day
Leo Osborne it’s a satisfying feeling.
My friend sells firewood here in the UK.
Sells it split in Ton bags or by the trailer load.
He sells plenty , you've to mind folks are basically lazy so if they can easily buy processed firewood , they will.
Done already subbed
cntsles fabrication thank you!
@@CaptainKleeman anytime don't comment very much anymore but I watch
Have you thought about trying to stock them at the Derby Market? (or a local store) I am sure you have seen those little bundles that are sold in convenience and grocery stores, at like $5.99 each for about 6 small logs. Will be subscribing to towboat channel as soon as I finish typing this. So the inside of the tow boat cabin will be cedar??? Can't wait to be able to rent it! Best of luck and thanks for posting.
mrmikeyd I have thought about that, haven’t approached them yet, but it may be something I try! And thanks for subscribing to the new channel!
@@CaptainKleeman Might want to check requirements. To sell at wholesale like that, most area require it to be heat treated and certified. You know, to stop the spread of emerald ash borer and other pests. They really got on the rules since this round of kills. Also watch crossing county lines with your bundles although ceder may be exempt. Kinda wish they had done that sooner as those ash trees were really pretty before the die off.
New Viewer can I ask where you're at? Beautiful country
Love your neighbor's Lab and your thought process about buying toys! Do you watch "Outdoors with the Morgans"?
Blake Loke I do! Really enjoy their channel. I’ve tried reaching out to the a. Couple times, but when channels get that bit I’m sure they get emails all the time.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas. Never burned cedar, bet it smells nice. Do you cook over it, does it add a good flavor? Nice video, great drone footage, looking forward to seeing your new channel. Sounds like a good plan to generate some cash flow, maybe you could point put in some solar panels to charge the saw and claim it was cut with green renewable energy. 😂. For a second there I was wondering if you were going to try my charcoal idea, but the cedar is better as long as you have it since you can make boards and firewood at the same time. Just don’t let Wade know your milling. 😂. Stay safe, wishing you and your family the best.
Tom Bixby I have actually been researching your charcoal idea for our own use. It may be something I try in the future!
