This is literally my life, had I decided to stay in cancer genetics research and pursue my PhD. But after a few wasted yet valuable years, I knew it wasn't my calling. Nurse practitioner is my second career now and I love it! Please continue vlogging, it's honestly so inspiring to see East African sisters in science, especially research!! Would've been nice to see a familiar face many moons ago 😊

I'm so happy you made a youtube! A fellow east african in the STEM field that also vlogs is just what I needed!Thank you for sharing your lab with us Amina. I would love to know more about the two proteins you work with and the long term goals you have with them. I also would love if you shared with us tips on how to get into graduate schools and how you chose your area of study? Also what made you interested in research? hahaha sorry for all these questions but this is so exciting! I am currently studying Cellular and Molecular Biology in an American university with the long term goal of Medical School and it's so rare for me to see people who look like me in these fields.

Philosophy is beautiful! It gets rid of all the garbage & gets to the point. If you ever do get serious with it, it'll challenge all your held beliefs, morals & values. From your mere existence, to what course you'll take in life, your culture, political stance, your religiosity, your relationships with close friends/family & others, your world view & the change you want to see in it etc etc.. The list could be endless i reckon haha..
Just thought i'd give you a heads up because if you're too deep into it, there's no turning back or else it'll be too much to bare on your conscious & trying to forget all about it will prove difficult. At Least that was the situation in my case. lol that's enough from me...
Wish you a enlightened journey ahead!! :)

Hey, I'm currently torn between going into research i.e PhD or going for graduate entry medicine. Could you please give me some insight on what it's like doing a PhD and the benefits of it? Thanks.

    • @DrAminaYonis
      @DrAminaYonis  8 лет назад +3

+Unknown Vampire Hey! That's a great question, there's a LOT of things to consider before making a decision. I'll just try to list a few here that come to the top of my mind:
      (1) Time: PhD is 3 years, Med is 4 yrs + 2 yrs training - so it really depends on how old you are and how long you want to stay in education for.
      (2) Career: With a PhD you can literally go into anything from academia to banking to teaching, Medicine obviously leads to practicing Medicine but you are still open to other options too. As a Medical Dr you will be better paid than staying in academia after a PhD but if you went into another field after a PhD then you could be paid more. It really depends on what you end up doing afterwards.
      (3) Finance: You get paid/funded to study a PhD for all three/four years and you get money to travel to conferences and seminars all over the world, which is really fun and exciting. With Medicine, you'd have to get student finance or obviously pay for yourself in other ways. This really depends on your personal finances.
      (4) Applications: Generally, with a PhD you apply to a specific lab/supervisor and you will be interviewed and then you are in or not - it is extremely competitive. With Medicine, as you may know, you need UKCat etc, again this is fiercely competitive.
      (5) Environment: A PhD can get lonely depending on what lab you end up in, but if it is a small lab then you will end up working alone a lot. Luckily, my lab has about 8 people and so I'm always surrounded by people. With Medicine, you have lots of other students in your lectures and working as a medical Dr requires lots of interaction with people.
I can only tell you from my experience of a PhD - I'm in my final year and I've really enjoyed it! It is stressful at times, and you may need to come in during weekends and stay longer hours (but there is no 'easy' job anyway). I'm in a really friendly lab and every day is a new day with new challenges and it is very exciting and you really don't know what you will expect when you come in that day. You also need to be very patient and willing to fail at some things, but then you just continue and you will succeed eventually.
Hope this cleared things up a bit! Both courses are very different and if I were you, I would think very hard about whether you LOVE medicine enough, as being a medical Dr is no joke. Also, you have to think about how much you LOVE research, because again, you will be studying a tiny aspect of science for three years, and if you hate it, then it will not be a pleasant experience.
      :)

+nikita anderson Thank you! There are a few ways. You could search online for anyone who is offering internships or summer placements in the lab. Or you could e-mail directly to lecturers who have labs and see if they will take you on. There are also usually some studentships where you can get paid for spending 6-8 weeks in a lab. Hope this helps :)

I second the above comment. Some universities also have a job listings site where they may place open positions. But you're best bet is to look into the department you are interested and emailing the faculty directly. If they aren't hiring, you can also ask if they have recommendation for anyone you can email. Good luck!!

+Sabrina A Aw thank you for this comment, really made me smile! This is the exact reason why I decided to start RUclips, because I was frustrated with the lack of representation of East African woman who are in the field of Science/ STEM. I go to conferences with hundreds of people and I am the only person of colour! It's so sad.
Wow, you're doing an amazing thing, keep it up and yes, for sure, I will be doing lots more videos about my field and how to get in!
